Melissa Valentine: The rise of the flash organization

Melissa Valentine: The rise of the flash organization

This episode's guest on Stanford Engineering’s The Future of Everything podcast, management science and engineering professor Melissa Valentine studies a workplace phenomenon known as the flash organization. These ad hoc groups of experts are assembled online and exist only long enough to solve a particular problem—perhaps a week or few months at a time. As soon as the problem is solved, the flash org dissipates, and the participants get paid for their time and expertise. It’s a whole new way to work.

Join us for a look at the future of the gig economy on this episode of Stanford Engineering’s The Future of Everything podcast.

At the end of this episode, host Russ Altman, along with the entire production team of The Future of Everything, offer a tribute to our audio engineer, Ray Avila, who passed away in October of 2022. Ray's work was instrumental in making this podcast possible and his presence is sorely missed.

How High Performance Teams Are Formed In The Virtual Environment, With Nadine Soyez

How High Performance Teams Are Formed In The Virtual Environment, With Nadine Soyez

Even though the topic has certainly gained in importance in recent months - due to the global pandemic - the two get to the bottom of the success factors for virtual high-performance teams.

What does it take to create an environment in which it no longer matters where the collaborators and project teams are located?

Globally active companies and corporations have been using the advantages of virtual collaboration for a long time. Small and medium-sized companies are now becoming aware that high-performing employees and teams do not necessarily and by no means permanently have to be together in the same place in order to create extraordinary things.

Globally distributed and active teams require one thing above all: a suitable mindset, especially in project management and at the leadership level.

In times of radical change (VUCA world), old hierarchical structures, 5-year business plans and command and control are simply no longer practicable. Of course, the transformation to a sustainable business model and company does not bear fruit overnight.

It is a process that takes time. This podcast is an invitation to all those who are on their way there or are already on the tracks of New Work.

Questions and points discussed in this episode:

    • How to increase productivity?
    • What does a virtual team need to have in order to be productive and perform at its best?
    • How can I act as a leader to keep my team productive - or perhaps increase performance compared to the traditional office environment?
    • Why doesn't the "9 to 5" face-to-face work schedule work in the virtual environment?
    • What happens when managers don't set goals and expectations are not transparent?
    • Weaknesses and errors in the corporate culture and structure become immediately visible in virtual collaboration - what are typical examples?
    • Synchronous communication vs. asynchronous communication
    • High opportunity costs for documentation
