    Fargo (1996)

    Fargo (1996)

Brace yourself for a subzero cinematic journey as we explore the wintry wit and suspense of the Coen Brothers' "Fargo." Discover the complexities of Jerry Lundegaard's bumbling crime gone wrong, and how the frigid Minnesota landscape becomes a silent character in this tale of desperation and dark comedy. No guest needed; just you, me, and the quirky universe of a cult classic that defies genre boundaries and continues to freeze audiences in their tracks.

Hold onto your snow hats as we unravel the hilariously tense moment when Jean's quiet knitting is shattered by the intrusion of two bumbling kidnappers. Contrast that with Jerry's own unraveling in corporate meetings, painting a stark picture of a man whose schemes are as slippery as the ice-covered roads his ill-fated plans travel on. The episode's storytelling is as kinetic as a high-speed chase across a snow-blanketed landscape, capturing the chaos of a crime that's as absurd as it is deadly.

Finally, we wrap up snugly, examining the aftermath of a criminal plan skidding out of control. Marge's earnest sleuthing peels away the layers of Jerry's precarious web of lies, leading us to a wood chipper scene that's as gruesome as it is iconic. "Fargo" serves up a frosty reminder that, sometimes, greed leads to nothing but heartache and hilarity. So stoke the fire and join me for a deep dive into the frostbitten soul of this unique film, where the chill in the air is matched only by the warmth of our collective chuckles at human folly.

    161: You're a smooth smoothie, you know? | Fargo (1996)

Here we are. Another classic film of the 90s that I am just watching for the first time. I'm not as familiar with the Coen Brother's work so this is a newer genre for me. I've heard so much about Fargo for years and I'm soo glad that I've finally watched it. Me and Charles take a deep dive and basically rave about how much we love Frances McNormand.

There are so many quotable moments that we try to dramatically act out, I realize that I have a massive crush on Steve Buscemi, and now we want to watch the new series'.

Off-topic rants: Oscar rage minute, Oprah, niche films, other shocking films I've never watched

    Hamlet & Lone Star

    Hamlet & Lone Star
After stepping out for a bit with a month-long hiatus, Overlapping Dialogue is back with our continued journey through 90s cinema, one that has us sorting out a pair of 1996 films riddled with daddy issues: Hamlet and Lone Star. But before we account for the sins of the father(s), we devour a Blue Plate Special slate sure to offer something for everyone as we assess some of this summer's most talked about releases with Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part 1, Oppenheimer, and Barbie. And yes, we do spend time unpacking the larger Barbenheimer phenomenon. Once the smoke clears and the glitter fades away, we dive into this edition's double feature: listen as we admire Kenneth Branagh's reverent adaptation of one of the Bard's most iconic works and marvel at the economical mastery present in John Sayles's small town neo-noir western. Primal Fear feat. Jesse Hawken

Jesse Hawken, host of Junk Filter Podcast, returns to the show to discuss 'Primal Fear'. The film is a taut piece of middlebrow entertainment which offers maximum reward as a cable classic.

We discuss the film's two standout performances - one from aging handsome guy Richard Gere as a hotshot attorney looking for his next big break, the other from then-newcomer Edward Norton who took audiences by storm and wound up on the short list of actors nominate for an Academy Award for their very first film performance. Then, we talk the movie's famous twist ending, and the way that it betrays an uncomfortably reactionary streak that resonated with audiences in mid-90s America. Finally, we have some words about the death of the midbudget cable classic, and look at the current state of the industry vis-a-vis the tandem strike efforts from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

Episode 48 - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Full Review Movie Podcast

Get ready for a gripping tale of grief, anger, and justice as we delve into the critically acclaimed film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Join the BTW team as we explore the powerful performances, nuanced characters, and thought-provoking themes that make this movie a must-see.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a 2017 dark comedy-drama film written, directed, and produced by Martin McDonagh. The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two of them - Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell. The film is a thought-provoking exploration of grief, anger, justice, and redemption that is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers.

The plot revolves around a grieving mother named Mildred Hayes, played brilliantly by Frances McDormand, who rents three billboards on the outskirts of Ebbing, Missouri to call out the town's police department for their lack of progress in solving her daughter's rape and murder case. The billboards read "Raped While Dying", "And Still No Arrests?", and "How Come, Chief Willoughby?" The town is thrown into chaos as the billboards become a source of controversy, with the police department, led by Chief Bill Willoughby, played by Woody Harrelson, and his officer, Dixon, played by Sam Rockwell, feeling personally attacked and outraged by Mildred's actions.

The film's strength lies in its complex and flawed characters. Mildred is a force to be reckoned with, a grieving mother who refuses to be silenced and is willing to take matters into her own hands to get justice for her daughter. She is angry, abrasive, and unapologetic, but she is also vulnerable, grieving, and deeply empathetic. Frances McDormand's performance as Mildred is nothing short of remarkable, and she brings a raw authenticity and depth to the character that makes her both relatable and unforgettable.

Woody Harrelson's portrayal of Chief Willoughby is also noteworthy. He is a compassionate and well-intentioned police chief who is struggling with a terminal illness and the guilt of not being able to solve the case. He recognizes the pain and anger that Mildred is feeling and sympathizes with her, even though he knows he cannot do much to help her. Sam Rockwell's character, Dixon, is initially presented as a racist and violent police officer, but as the film progresses, we see that he is also a product of his environment and upbringing. The film challenges us to consider how people are shaped by their surroundings and how they can change if given the opportunity.

The movie's themes are heavy and thought-provoking, and the film does not shy away from difficult topics such as rape, murder, police brutality, racism, and the justice system. However, the film manages to balance its dark subject matter with humour and wit, making it an engaging and entertaining watch. McDonagh's signature blend of humour and drama is evident throughout the film, and he manages to keep the audience engaged and invested in the story even during its bleakest moments.

The film's cinematography and music are also worth mentioning. The movie is shot beautifully, capturing the stark beauty of the Missouri countryside and the grittiness of the town's surroundings. The music, composed by Carter Burwell, complements the film perfectly, providing an atmospheric and haunting backdrop to the story.

Overall, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. It is a powerful and emotional story that explores some of the most difficult aspects of the human experience. The film is anchored by incredible performances from its cast, a sharp script, and a unique blend of humour and drama. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking and impactful cinema.

Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith.

The film is a striking interpretation of a novel that is loosely based on a horrifying true story about women in a Mennonite colony who were raped persistently by the men in their community while they slept, attacks the colonists initially blamed on Satan or hallucination.

The circumstances of the attacks that inspired Women Talking are nightmarish. For years, men in the Manitoba Colony used an anesthetic initially made for cattle to render girls and women unconscious and rape them.

    Noah Segan on 'Raising Arizona'

Actor Noah Segan -- or, should we say, writer/director/producer/actor Noah Segan -- is the star and creative force behind his directorial debut, BLOOD RELATIVES. In it, he plays a century-old, lone-wolf vampire who suddenly has a teenage daughter to think about. Segan, a dad himself, chose another suddenly-a-father character for today's epsiode: H.I. McDonnough (Nicolas Cage) from the 1987 Coen Brothers comedy Raising Arizona. Listen and learn how fatherhood, creative genesis, vampirism, and work/life balance are all mixed into the space between these two films, made 35 years apart.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about an action movie really straddling that naughty/nice divide: Violent Night.

Agnieszka Smoczyńska on 'Ponyo,' 'Kill Bill' and More

Polish film director Agnieszka Smoczyńska has fascinated audiences with films like The Lure and Fugue. Now, her first English-language film is in theaters. Silent Twins tells the true story of the Gibbons twins, with a style that sets harsh reality and the beauty (and power) of imagination in contrast. So perhaps it’s no surprise that stories of fantastic heroines on fanstastic journeys has long enchanted Aga. In this episode, she talks with Jordan about her own work and life, and goes on a whirlwind tour through movies as different as Pippi Longstocking, Three Colors: Blue, The Silence of the Lambs, and Nomadland.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing you’ll want to stick around for.
