In a major entertainment news development, filmmaker Noah Baumbach has entered into a comprehensive deal with Netflix, marking a reunion with Oscar-winning actress Laura Dern for an upcoming Netflix movie. Baumbach's latest venture, features an ensemble cast including George Clooney and Adam Sandler, adds Riley Keough and Billy Crudup. Baumbach is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards for co-writing Barbie with Greta Gerwig, but details about the new film are kept under wraps. Described as a "funny and emotional coming-of-age film about adults," the untitled project will be Baumbach's fourth feature for Netflix, following White Noise, Marriage Story, and The Meyerowitz Stories.

    Xenovember: Alien: Covenant

    Xenovember: Alien: Covenant

In the first ‘Xenovember’ episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Ridley Scott’s second prequel to his 1979 masterpiece, Alien, the divisive sci-fi horror film, Alien: Covenant!

Yet another wonderful score! Moments of true tension and chaotic horror! Beautiful cinematography and production design! Some of the worst vicarious back pain you’ll ever experience! Questionable character decisions mixed with solid performances and compelling human drama! Michael Fassbender in dual roles that are equally riveting and perfectly contrast each other! One of the most iconic flute-related scenes/lines in movie history! Somewhat unclear musings on the dangers of artificial intelligence and the concepts of sentience, creation, life, and death! Was this simply a way for Ridley Scott to make a quick buck and ensure funding for future projects? Does the demystification of the xenomorph continue to harm the series? Would Alien: Covenant be an easier watch for non-Alien fans?!

In addition, Tim shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Death Becomes Her, while Alex briefly discusses Talk to Me, Killers of the Flower Moon, and David Fincher’s new Netflix movie, The Killer!

    Duck Soup & Big Fish

    Duck Soup & Big Fish
Happy New Year! We decided to kick off 2023 right by focusing our attention on a pair of films that at once signal disastrous ends and new beginnings, all yoked with the tempered romance of yesteryears: Duck Soup and Big Fish. But before we double dip, we navigate a Blue Plate Special slate focused on three thought-provoking new releases, ranging from whodunit Glass Onion, the profane epic Babylon, and finally the long awaited adaptation of Don DeLillo's White Noise. In moving forward though, this episode's subject films send us scrambling for the old way-back machine: listen as we delight in the Depression-era hijinks of the Marx Brothers and celebrate the last excellent effort from Tim Burton before we preview perhaps the strangest, most downright shocking double feature in Overlapping Dialogue history. Danny Woodhead on a barefoot Bill Belichick, testing the newest golf clubs and why he's unimpressed by Tom Brady

Former NFL running back Danny Woodhead joins this week’s episode to recap his epic week as a club tester at the Golf Digest Hot List, where he hit thousands of golf shots with all the latest and greatest sticks (00:17:05). Plus, he gives us an A+ Bill Belichick story from his time in New England, and dishes on the biggest “trap game” of his career, which involves a request from his wife. Finally, the boys make their Houston Open and NFL Week 10 picks, and CP and Steve break down their golf rounds with an Emmy-winning actor and recent podcast guest Doug Smith.

128: You still sleep with the light on? | Sleepers (1996)

This one was heavy. It's been a while since I've seen this film and it's been on my list to review. In a complete perfect casting that really gives such dimension to a difficult story to tell. Me and Jai talk about our research on the controversy surrounding the original source material, Brad Pitt's unusual lukewarm performance, and Brad Renfro.

off topic points include: Keanu Reeves and his charming energy and air conditioning

Episode 317: "Big Fish" Little Lies

Episode 317: "Big Fish" Little Lies

"Big Fish" is 100% a movie that makes us cry every single time. Are we gluttons for emotional punishment? Maybe. But the movie is so good! It's a great story that uses the fantastical to help people come to terms with their history and deal with loss. And it was made into a Broadway musical, which we're still mad about not seeing. We pair it with a Cabernet Sauvignon from True Myth.

    Metacritic Score: 58/100

Movie Sync Notes: We stream "Big Fish" Netflix. We start "Big Fish" 10:07 into the pod and push play on part two 1:19:00 into the pod.

    Cate Blanchett in 'Charlotte Gray'

    Cate Blanchett in 'Charlotte Gray'

We are in the final stretch of the podcast series. This week it's another of Cate Blanchett's many titular roles and Charlotte Gray (2001). In this episode Murtada discusses Gillian Armstrong's World War II film, the many loving close ups she affords Balnchett and whether the film works as both a sweeping epic romance and a narrative about life in occupied France during the war.

Hosted, Produced and Edited by Murtada Elfadl.

We thought we'd follow up last week's lengthy labyrinth of an episode on the events of November 22, 1963 with a more quiet and graceful remembrance of the same day and its lasting after effects with 2016's Jackie. But before we take yet another stroll down the American Century's middle period...this week's Blue Plate Special finds us discussing our recent experience seeing legendary rock band Genesis early on their ongoing The Last Domino? tour before transitioning to some thoughts on Wes Anderson's latest The French Dispatch. The film of the week inevitably sparks a discussion on recent trends in biopics and period films over the past decade and how exactly Natalie Portman's brilliant performance and Larrain's icily precise direction at once subvert and compliment the very sort of myth making historical fictions have been forging for centuries. ...about The Hi-Lo Country (1998)

    ...about The Hi-Lo Country (1998)

Stephen Frears’ noir western melodrama came and went without making any significant impact in 1998 and remains unavailable on any streaming source as of this recording. We think it’s time this film and it’s journeyman director got some renewed attention. “The Hi-Lo Country” serves as our jumping off point to explore Frear’s complete filmography.

Directed by Stephen Frears. Written by Walon Green. Produced by Martin Scorsese. Starring Billy Crudup, Woody Harrelson, Patricia Arquette, Penelope Cruz, Sam Elliott, Cole Hauser, John Diehl, Darren E. Burrows, Sandy Baron & Katy Jurado.

How is the world wrong about this movie?

From Andras: At the time it came out, the world ignored The Hi-Lo Country, and lack of availability has kept it obscure to this day, but this film and its soulful performances by so many great stars of the 90’s thoughtfully directed by Stephan Frears hearkens back to films like “Giant” and “East of Eden”, as well as Frears’ own filmography which we explore in this episode.
