Episode 278 - Kiss of Death

Today the boys review Kiss of Death from 1995, a relatively unknown ganger movie starring David Caruso, Nicholas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames, and Michael Rapaport. Jimmy (David Caruso) is an ex-con trying to stay on the straight and narrow. As hard has he tries though, he can't elude the temptations of the criminal underworld. While doing "one last job" with his cousin Ronnie (Michael Rapaport), he gets busted and begins the downward spiral for not only himself, but his entire family. Can Jimmy claw his way out of his life of crime? Can a movie starring David Caruso and Michael Rapaport possibly score well? And who in their right mind picked this movie?

Body Parts (1991) & Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the movie that asks “what if Hitchcock were gross?” The body horror film, Body Parts!

A car accident scene that traumatized young minds years before Final Destination 2! Great music and opening credits! A breezy runtime! An exciting physical therapy montage! One of the strangest uses of a water tank you’ve ever seen! Poorly attached limbs! A solid cast that includes Brad Dourif, Kim Delaney, and Jeff Fahey smoking his brains out! The suspense of a Hitchcockian thriller, but with the gore of a far schlockier B-movie! Where does evil live? In the soul? In the blood? Watch this movie for a confusing answer!

In addition, Tim and Alex share their spoiler-free thoughts on Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, while Tim passes along a recommendation for Johnny Mnemonic: In Black and White from his wife Chrissy!

You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends!

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 review

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 review

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to groan as loud as you can for me making that reference. I bring you the latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise with Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1. We’ve had to go five years without seeing Ethan Hunt, and the rest of the IMF team, head out on another adventure. In this one, old enemies and old “friends” come back to face Ethan as a worldwide threat rises up. This threat is like no enemy that the IMF, or you, have ever seen. Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct this Mission movie, his third. In this installment, we get desert gun fights, intense submarine action, car chases, an epic jump off a cliff with a motorcycle by Cruise himself, a standoff on a train and a train crash. A little bit of everything from the action smorgasbord. Is it good enough to make sense for you to get up off your couch to check it out? Watch, or listen, to this spoiler-free review to find out!

A movie with as many stunts as it has words in the title. Starting off, we give our takes on how Dead Reckoning Part One, officially one of the most expensive movies ever made, compares to previous installments. Additionally, we play the Rotten Tomatoes game and react to a few popular reviews of the movie on Letterboxd.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also co-wrote the film with Erik Jendresen. The film stars Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, and Henry Czerny. It opened nationwide on July 12 through Paramount Pictures and has a 163-minute runtime.

    Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

    Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

The Born to Watch team tackle the blockbuster spy epic, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, but not everything is as it seems. One of the team is a blockbuster traitor, who will it be?

Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the sixth instalment in the popular spy-action franchise, continues to redefine the genre with its relentless intensity, jaw-dropping stunts, and a gripping narrative. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise, the film takes the audience on a high-stakes mission filled with twists, turns, and breath taking action sequences. From start to finish, Mission: Impossible - Fallout keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, delivering an exhilarating cinematic experience.

The film picks up after the events of the previous instalment, Rogue Nation, as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team must recover stolen plutonium before it falls into the wrong hands. As the story unfolds, Hunt finds himself entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a shadowy terrorist organization known as The Apostles. The plot is intricately woven, blending espionage, double-crosses, and personal stakes, keeping the audience guessing and engaged throughout.

What sets Mission: Impossible - Fallout apart from other action films is its ability to balance high-octane set pieces with a coherent and engaging narrative. The film seamlessly transitions from one pulse-pounding action sequence to the next, while also giving the characters room to breathe and develop. The stakes are continually raised, and the tension escalates, making it impossible to look away.

Tom Cruise's dedication to performing his own stunts is legendary, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout showcases his unwavering commitment to delivering breath taking action sequences. From clinging to the side of a helicopter to leaping between buildings, Cruise's fearless performance adds an unparalleled level of authenticity and intensity to the film. His portrayal of Ethan Hunt is as charismatic and determined as ever, making him one of the most iconic action heroes of our time.

In addition to Cruise, the supporting cast delivers strong performances that enhance the film's overall impact. Simon Pegg brings his signature wit and charm to the role of Benji Dunn, providing much-needed comic relief amid the chaos. Rebecca Ferguson returns as the enigmatic Ilsa Faust, adding depth and complexity to her character. Henry Cavill joins the franchise as August Walker, a no-nonsense CIA operative, and his physicality and intensity make him a formidable presence on screen. The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, elevating the film beyond its action-packed sequences.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout raises the bar when it comes to action sequences, leaving audiences in awe of the sheer spectacle on display. Whether it's a high-speed motorcycle chase through the streets of Paris or a thrilling helicopter pursuit in the mountains, each set piece is meticulously crafted and executed with precision. The practical effects and stunt work create a visceral and immersive experience, amplified by the film's stunning cinematography. The camerawork effectively captures the intensity and danger, pulling viewers into the heart of the action.

The film's musical score, composed by Lorne Balfe, complements the high-energy visuals with a pulsating and adrenaline-fueled soundtrack. It seamlessly blends with the action, enhancing the suspense and excitement. The sound design is equally impressive, with explosions, gunshots, and punches reverberating through the theatre, immersing the audience in every moment.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout is an outstanding addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise, delivering an adrenaline-fueled experience that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. With its intricate plot, jaw-dropping action sequences, and charismatic performances, the film exemplifies the very best of the spy-action genre. Christopher McQuarrie's direction and Tom Cruise's fearless commitment to performing his own stunts create a cinematic masterpiece that will leave audiences breathless. Mission: Impossible - Fallout is a must-watch for fans of action cinema and a testament to the enduring appeal of the franchise.
