How They Did It, Pt. 2: The Christian Right and Roe

How They Did It, Pt. 2: The Christian Right and Roe

At long last, Matt and Sam dive into the origins of the Christian right—a complicated tale often flattened by contemporary debates. What was the history of Christian anti-abortion activism before Roe, and how soon after the landmark Supreme Court decision did conservative Christians coalesce around the abortion—and other issues—to become the political force we know today? What did it take to get Catholics and evangelicals to join forces, and what were the barriers to them coming together, especially given the history of anti-Catholicism in the United States? And how did all this help reshape the GOP into a vehicle for anti-abortion politics, given that such a scenario was not fated on the eve of Roe? Your hosts take up these questions and more, stopping in the early 1990s—when they'll pick up with the story in the third and final episode in the series.

S3E34 Beach Talk #82 - Where is Carla?

S3E34 Beach Talk #82 - Where is Carla?

Ken and Betsey bid farewell to Carla. They celebrate Chicago's wonders. Tragically, Buffalo was the scene of yet another deadly shooting, perpetrated by a  young assailant, heavily armed, with evil intent. His reasons were disturbingly clear - his manifesto rooted in white supremacy. The same weekend, there was a fatal shooting in Geneva Presbyterian Church in Orange County, CA. The mid-term elections loom large, with great consequence.  The perils of a Republican victory in the midterms included Mitch McConnell as Senate Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House, and Jim Jordan as (probable) House Judiciary Committee Chair. Frank Schaeffer, son of Francis Schaeffer, has repudiated his role in the 1980s in giving birth to the far-right agenda so dominant today. Secretary Pete tours Europe to lead a presidential delegation to the Invictus Games.

    THEOLOGY | Understanding Modernity

    THEOLOGY | Understanding Modernity

Joseph Clair talks with Paul Lorenzini about some of the key cultural movements in post-enlightenment history. They discuss romanticism, materialism, and Christianity, and the tension that found its climax in the 1960s. They also touch on the value of understanding the historical context of contemporary thought and the powerful way that the Gospel of Jesus meets the true spiritual needs of all people.

Dr. Paul Lorenzini is a nuclear engineer, writer, and philosopher. A student of Francis Schaeffer, Paul focuses on following philosophical thought through the centuries since the enlightenment.

How to Be Happy: A Conversation with Frank Schaeffer

How to Be Happy: A Conversation with Frank Schaeffer

We cover a lot of ground in this one folks. You may know Frank Schaeffer as the son of famed evangelical author Francis Schaeffer, but since helping his father found the religious right in America (we're not kidding), Frank has had a dramatic personal transformation and a fascinating career. We talk with him about his new book Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy. The conversation covers Frank's role in abortion becoming the cause célèbre of the American evangelical establishment, his relationship with his parents and other famous evangelical leaders of recent decades, what a family values agenda would actually look like, how corporate tech culture is killing people's ability to be happy, and how understanding human evolution can help. Frank is raw, honest, and deliciously brash. He's also got a potty mouth, so be advised if you're listening with children.

Check out Frank's own podcast, In Conversation... with Frank Schaeffer.

Episode 125: "Lessons from the Past, Wisdom for the Future" with Steve Garber and Steve Turner

Yogi Berra is not only known for having one of the greatest baseball names ever, but for uttering some amazingly creative and funny things. After experiencing the cultural upheaval of the last twelve months, I was reminded of what Berra said after watching his teammates Micky Mantle and Roger Maris hit back to back home runs: It’s déjà vu all over again!” For those of us who came of age during the late 1960s and early 70s, the last few months seem strangely familiar. What’s the same? What’s different? And are there lessons we learned fifty years ago that can help us understand and respond to our current times? Stick with us as we seek answers to these questions in an enlightening conversation with a pair of astute culture watchers, Steve Garber and Steve Turner, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

Aesthetics: A Christian Philosophy of Art (3/3)

Aesthetics: A Christian Philosophy of Art (3/3)

What is the difference between art and propaganda? What makes some painters better than others? A Christian philosophy of art is desperately needed in our ugly and twisted culture. Francis Schaeffer, the Christian thinker of the 20th century, has valuable insights on how to judge art, as well as practical advise for art appreciation and Christian artists today. In this final installment, we bring together the final pieces of a Christian philosophy of art.

Aesthetics: Art, Beauty, and the Good Life (1/3)

Aesthetics: Art, Beauty, and the Good Life (1/3)

If The Odyssey is so good that it is still in print after thousands of years, don’t you think it might be worth a read? If Bach is still treasured 250 years after his death, would you consider that there is something you’re missing? The question of art and beauty is not abstract and philosophical, it immediately concerns what it means to live a good life and enjoy the best possible experiences. The postmodern axiom, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, turns out to threaten your happiness! The Christian impulse, which sees beauty in the universe, grounded in the nature of God, once again matches our deepest intuitions and our critical conclusions about art, beauty and the good life.

How to Dialogue (Productively) When You Disagree

How to Dialogue (Productively) When You Disagree

What does it look like to dialogue in a manner that honors Christ? That's our topic today. Special guest Principal Dustin Williams joins the show along with Chelsea Carrier and Bryce Ballard.

Together we consider the following specific questions:

    • How does Scripture address the idea of arguing or giving an argument?
    • What does it mean to have a productive dialogue?
    • What are ways to find common ground with another person? How we do handle presuppositions?
    • How do you know if someone you’re arguing with is sincere?
    • In light of our current climate (especially regarding COVID-19 and the death of George Floyd), what are some ways we can hold productive dialogue with one another?

    Special Guest: Principal Dustin Williams

    • Dustin currently serves as elementary principal at Providence Academy and has taught classical rhetoric for many years. He serves as Associate Pastor at Springdale Baptist Church in Kingsport, TN, and he's also pursuing doctoral work at Milligan College.

In this episode, Principal Williams recommends the following books:

    • Unoffendable by Brant Hanson
    • How to Argue Like Jesus by Joe Carter
    • The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt

    Theme music:

    Michael Cousineau: L'Abri Switzerland

    Michael Cousineau: L'Abri Switzerland

Adrienne and Michael continue their conversation with a focus on L'Abri, Switzerland. Michael vulnerably shares his experience in Switzerland- from the people who he met to the passion for philosophy that he uncovered. TMR 152 : Dr. Krish Kandiah : PARADOXOLOGY

TMR 152 : Dr. Krish Kandiah : PARADOXOLOGY
"Christianity was never meant to be simple"—Kandiah To begin this autumn's season of programmes here at TMR, we welcome the author, activist and theologian Dr. Krish Kandiah, former President of the London School of Theology and Founding Director of Home for Good, a "young charity seeking to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children". Dr. Kandiah joins us to discuss his award-winning book, PARADOXOLOGY, which explores some of the difficult questions about the Christian faith and argues that it is often through wrestling with the paradoxes of faith that we learn about God. Krish also introduces us to Books for Life, his inspiring new online media project aimed at encouraging people to engage with high-quality Christian literature through video interviews with well-known Christian leaders. TMR 137: Thomas R. Goehle : America's Post-Christian Apocalypse (Part Two : Faith & Reason)
"Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence..." Or so said Richard Dawkins at the Edinburgh International Science Festival in 1992. But is that really true? Do faith and reason really not mix? And why do so many people seem to think this? Joining us, for the second of a short series of interviews, is the writer and researcher Thomas R. Goehle, author of America's Post-Christian Apocalypse: How Secular Modernism Marginalized Christianity and The Peril of Leaving God Behind at the End of the Age. Adopting a very, very broad-brush-stroke approach, in order to trace some of the contours of Western philosopy and theology, we embark upon a whistle-stop tour—from Thomas Aquinas and the Mediaeval Synthesis, through the Enlightenment, and onward into (Post)Modernity—and explore some of the reasons for the unhappy divorce of faith and reason in contemporary Western culture. Thomas Goehle earned a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy of Religion (honors) from Denver Seminary. He lives in Williamsville, New York where he is working on his next book tentatively entitled Transhumanism, AI, and the Apocalypse. (For show notes please visit http://themindrenewed.com)

    TMR 132 : Thomas R. Geohle : America's Post-Christian Apocalypse (Part One)

    TMR 132 : Thomas R. Geohle : America's Post-Christian Apocalypse (Part One)
"What is truth?"—a rhetorical question famously snarled by Pontius Pilate during his interrogation of Jesus 2000 years ago. Yet the question is a real one, and the answer of monumental significance in every day and age. But especially in ours, an age in which the very concept of truth itself is under merciless attack. Joining us, for the first of a short series of interviews, is the writer and researcher Thomas R. Goehle, author of the important new book America's Post-Christian Apocalypse: How Secular Modernism Marginalized Christianity and The Peril of Leaving God Behind at the End of the Age. Beginning with the thesis of his book—that "secular (post)modernism has increasingly replaced Christianity as the hegemonic authority in our society"—we discuss how some of the negative fruits of the Enlightenment led a spiritually-autonomous humanity into the absurdities of extreme relativism and political correctness, and ask if such a humanity could resist the tyranny of a nascent New World Order.

    TMR 113 : John J. Thompson : Jesus, Bread & Chocolate

    TMR 113 : John J. Thompson : Jesus, Bread & Chocolate
The Mind Renewed returns from its "half-term" break for an interview with John J. Thompson, veteran of the music industry and author of the thoughtful and challenging book Jesus Bread and Chocolate : Crafting a Handmade Faith in a Mass-Market World. Speaking from his passion for authentic spirituality, transformative community and artisanal living, John J. Thompson reflects upon the growing phenomenon of the handcrafted and small-batch culture, and asks whether this intensifying counterpoint to the one-size-fits-all world of corporate mass-production might have something important to say about Jesus and our relationship with Him. "Is it possible that our culture's re-engagement with handcrafted local things and experiences might contain the echo of a 'still small voice' calling us home to our truer selves? What might a batch of artisanal chocolate, or a fresh-baked loaf of bread, or a cup of home-roasted carefully-brewed coffee, tell us about ourselves, our nature, or our faith?" (For show notes please visit http://themindrenewed.com)

TMR 085 : Carl Teichrib : Transformational Festivals and the Myths of Oneness

TMR 085 : Carl Teichrib : Transformational Festivals and the Myths of Oneness
Carl Teichrib, Chief Editor of Forcing Change, joins us for an in-depth discussion on the burgeoning phenomenon of Transformational Festivals. Each year many hundreds of thousands of people travel from all over the world to participate in these mind-altering events, temporarily immersing themselves in hypnotic, alternative 'realities'. Stunning locations, dramatic staging, electronic dance music, flamboyant clothing (or none), surrealist art, reimagined pagan myths, co-created rituals, communal living, and much more besides, variously combine to create participatory spaces in which people aim to experience 'new realities', thereby hoping to bring about personal and, ultimately, global transformation. But, as Carl Teichrib explains, at the core of these experiences lies the age-old deception of Oneness, that worldview in which all distinctions are subsumed, and all truth relativised, in the ineffable One; a collectivist and falsely 'tolerant' worldview in which the message of Jesus can never be tolerated. Reminding Christians of the mistakes of the past (in which countercultural movements tended to be either ignored or assimilated), Carl urges us now to engage as salt and light, with love and truth, so that the Gospel of Christ can be heard, and the cultural drift towards a One-World System be exposed. Podcast 055 : Audioblog : Julian Charles on Revelations Radio News
During the Christmas break, we take the opportunity to share a conversation between Yours Truly and Tim Kilkenny of Revelations Radio News. Tim asks about my journey towards starting The Mind Renewed, and how that relates to my faith in Christ. We also discuss truth, lies and tradition in relation to 'going down the rabbit hole', and how Jesus might interact with Truth Movement issues were He physically present in the contemporary situation; and thus, how Christians as members of the Body of Christ, should themselves engage.
