Creative freedom - Designer Marco Inve
Marco moved from Italy to London in 2015, ready for a big reset in his life and career. He quickly found a job in design but he wasn’t happy with the work he was doing. In search of more creative freedom and control, Marco began working with agencies and looking for a better job, but it soon became clear that freelancing was his best option.
Today, that drive to create work he’s proud of is still steering Marco, and he focuses on building relationships with clients who trust him and his expertise.
He chats to Steve about finding work, building a portfolio and being selective about the projects he takes on.

From designing for his buddies to speaking at events all over the world, Aaron’s been riding the freelance wave for more than two decades now, and it’s going well.

Aaron talks to Steve about how he got there, how he keeps it together and what he’s learned along the way.

What do I want my days to look like? - UI/UX Design Consultant Rafal Tomal
Rafal taught himself design and started freelancing around his schoolwork at age 16. When he moved from Poland to the United States at 18, and with zero contacts and no design qualification, he landed a full-time job as a developer.
Rafal progressed within the company, designing for some of the biggest websites and blogs out there, all while continuing with freelance work on the side. Until, eventually, he left the job to focus on his business and his personal brand full time.
He formed a small agency with friends later, before leaving because his days were filling up with project management tasks rather than design work.
These days, Rafal’s running a one-person design studio (with help from assistants and other specialists) and selling digital products and courses. “It’s not for everyone,” he says. “But don’t quit too soon. Give yourself a chance to see what’s really out there.”

An umbrella of skills - Experience Designer Stefano Bellucci Sessa
“Be the best boss you ever had,” says Stefano, and he’s trying to live up to that himself.
From not letting an employer’s limits hold him back, to re-imagining work-life balance on his own terms, to developing a portfolio that’s not just about winning work, but about showing his journey too; Stefano tries to make his professional development and mental well-being a priority.
With an “umbrella of skills” and a professional title that doesn’t tie him to one specific job, Stefano’s able to build deeper, longer-term relationships with clients.
He chats to Steve about he got started, how he finds clients, and how he’s worked on his mindset and well-being throughout his freelance career.

Finding the sweet spot - Designer Tom Ross
If you discount the 3 consecutive Saturdays he spent at Waitrose, Tom’s a thoroughbred entrepreneur. He started out knocking on the doors of local businesses at 16 years old, and then went from freelance to founder when he launched Design Cuts - a global marketplace of resources for designers.
Tom loves his company, but he’s learnt some hard lessons along the way. He talks openly about his experience of burnout that led to serious illness, and how he’s still dealing with the effects of that today.

Discovering myself again - Graphic Designer Lucas Gini
Lucas says that setting up on his own was like discovering himself again. Learning to know himself, what his goals are, and how he wants to live his life.
Right now that means trying to stay balanced in the Brazilian countryside, managing the graphic design work he does for clients alongside building his illustration portfolio.
And as for the piece of advice he’d give his younger self, it’s one we haven’t heard before: “Don’t be a bad boss to yourself,” Lucas says. That’s good advice, right? But how many of us can say we follow it?
