    Small Time

    Small Time

Guys, is there anything better than a stories episode?! NOPE — and get ready for this one!
We’re still going strong with our OOO cocktail theme, and we kicked off this episode with a peach cocktail called “Less Work Mo Beaches” before talking about how we just recently celebrated 2 whole years of Per Our Last Email (!!!) and finished a Photography Bootcamp Adobe livestream that we had the time of our lives on!
This stories episode is full of some goodies, starting off with a good ole’ fashioned SCAM ALERT (ugh, is there anything worse?!), talking about something we all now like to call the ✨bikini model debacle✨ and what happens when you connect your personal phone number to your Google My Business account.
    SOS.
You know what to do, pals!
Send your most audacious stories, thoughts, highs and lows to perourlastemail.com.

    We Made A Mistake

    We Made A Mistake

You know it’s going to be a good one when you hear us starting to throw out all of our best chicken expressions and puns. 🐓
Today’s episode is not like any regular episode… She’s a ~cool~ episode. (Mean Girls anyone?)
And by cool, we mean… she’s a little different. 👀
We’re veering away from our usual format to bring you a little minisode where we catch up, share our honest thoughts about what it meant for us to take time off, how we’re managing post-break, our love/mostly hate relationship with social media (can we all join forces and start our own platform already? 😅) and some tips on how to prepare yourself for an *actual* vacation as a freelancer. And yes, that means fully unplugging from work.
    Are ya’ll ready? 😎
Submit your stories and questions at perourlastemail.com, and we’ll do our best to read them as ridiculously as possible.

    Too Expensive

    Too Expensive

We’ve been absolutely living for the stories episodes lately, and today we’re giving you another jam- (and humor-) packed ep full of ‘em! After we both give you a WebMD update on our lives, we’re kickin’ off a new month with beer-inspired cocktails. This one is a root beer float situation with chocolate ice cream (!!!), aptly named “Rooting for You.”
On this episode, you’ll get to hear a wild medley of freelancer perfect storms, as you do. From a bizarre photo trip featuring kitchen rats and a pirate trip to a marketing bro (ugh) who “hates working with freelancers” all the way to good ole’ unprofessionalism in the workplace and one of the most… incredible… email responses we’ve ever seen, we’ve got quiiiiiite the lineup.
(Do you want a hint? It is literally a 2 word response, saying “Too expensive.” Smh.)
The way we see it, we have to smile through the pain… so come smile with us! Because, here’s the thing — we’re on this rockin,’ rollin,’ sometimes weird journey together.
    Tune on in.
Submit your stories and questions at perourlastemail.com, and we’ll do our best to read them as ridiculously as possible.

    Free T-Shirts

    Free T-Shirts

Let’s be honest… this freelancer life is WEIRD. Like, so weird. But, the weirdness makes it the coolest, too — and it’s why we live for a great Stories ep over here.
So, come hang out with us over a mocktail that tastes just like Jamba Juice — “The Sweet Surprise” — and ring out our month of sweet drinks with us as we talk about all the things! We’re hearing stories and diving into everything from a client with the v apt nickname of Big Al and bridezillas X 10 to a thinly veiled waitressing scam and our least favorite kind of client… a narcissist.
Because, here’s the truth: commiserating about the bad experiences makes the good ones a heck of a lot better.
Ready to come hang out and pretend our mocktail is extra strong? Tap the play button, and we’ll see you inside.
You know you’re sitting on a good story that you’re just dying to share. Send it into perourlastemail.com. Submit the story now, deal with your conscience later.

Seize the moment - Web Developer Tom Hirst

Seize the moment - Web Developer Tom Hirst

Tom began freelancing right out of university after realising that the suit-and-tie life wasn’t for him. 12 years on, he’s built a strong and successful web development business and he’s now ready to branch out and try his hand at other things.

When one of his tweets blew up and gained 2.5 million impressions, Tom seized the moment and wrote an ebook; the first in a lineup of digital products he’s creating to help freelancers get ahead. He’d always wanted to write a book and sell a product and he finds meaning in helping other freelancers to make their way.

Tom shares that story and chats to Steve about finding clients, pricing his services and balancing his time.

Creative confidence - Commercial Artist Murugiah

After spending seven years studying architecture, Sharm Murugiah realised he didn’t want to be an architect. He wanted to be an artist instead. And so, six months out of university, his freelance journey began.

Since then, Murugiah’s worked with high-profile brands such as Wired, Vans and Adobe. From learning to manage clients, to finding the best places to share his work online, to booking projects through agents and then taking back control, Murugiah says there’s a lot he’s done over the past nine years that he wouldn’t do again.

But, through all of that trial and error, he’s finally found confidence in his own creative style. Listen to him chat to Steve about how he got there.

The art of business - Lettering Artist Shelly Kim

Working in insurance and ready for a change, Shelly gave it all up after her fiancé encouraged her to find something she’d love doing.

She began to pursue a career as an artist, slowly at first alongside a back-up study programme, just in case it didn’t work out. By the time she’d finished studying, Shelly was ready to take her art full time.

Since then and with many lessons along the way, Shelly’s developed multiple income streams including custom work, in-person and online workshops, brand partnerships, a book deal and soon, an online course.

She chats to Steve about how she’s learned to put herself out there, market her business and turn followers into customers and, since the pandemic, find a better work-life balance.

The Yorkshire Tea break that didn't end - PR Consultant Sharon Davis

The Yorkshire Tea break that didn't end - PR Consultant Sharon Davis

Sharon has always known that she wanted to do her own thing. Her freelance journey began back in 2010 when she was in her mid-twenties, restless and ready for a change.

After six years freelancing and with plenty of successes (and some failures) under her belt, Sharon felt that call again. She needed something new, or a break at the very least, and so she moved to the middle of the English countryside to take a waitressing job for the summer.

Still there 3 years later, Sharon’s freelancing again, building her PR agency with a small team and running a second business - a networking organisation for women in business in the local area. This is her incredible story so far.

An appetite for adventure - Photographer and Videographer Steve Zavitz

An appetite for adventure - Photographer and Videographer Steve Zavitz

Steve began learning his craft in 2008 and took it professional in 2011. His ambition, back then, was to build a name for himself as an action sports photographer in the world of Parkour (freerunning).

Depsite knowing there wouldn’t be much money in it, Steve gave it a go anyway.

And he invested his time into a second niche, too. Calling on his background and contacts within the food industry, he began shooting for restaurants and then built his portfolio as a food photographer from there.

He explains how he presents the two sides of his work online in a way that appeals to both types of client. He also talks about finding work, figuring out what to charge and trying to move on from Instagram and YouTube.

What do I want my days to look like? - UI/UX Design Consultant Rafal Tomal

Rafal taught himself design and started freelancing around his schoolwork at age 16. When he moved from Poland to the United States at 18, and with zero contacts and no design qualification, he landed a full-time job as a developer.

Rafal progressed within the company, designing for some of the biggest websites and blogs out there, all while continuing with freelance work on the side. Until, eventually, he left the job to focus on his business and his personal brand full time.

He formed a small agency with friends later, before leaving because his days were filling up with project management tasks rather than design work.

These days, Rafal’s running a one-person design studio (with help from assistants and other specialists) and selling digital products and courses. “It’s not for everyone,” he says. “But don’t quit too soon. Give yourself a chance to see what’s really out there.”

Finding my own clients - Graphic Designer Christian Tait

Finding my own clients - Graphic Designer Christian Tait

Christian spent the best part of two decades working in agencies before eventually going freelance. He’d had a couple of trial runs before but this time he wanted to do it properly.

To Christian, that meant bringing in his own clients rather than setting up in the corner of an agency.

    And it’s working.

These days, Christian gets most of his work via social media or word of mouth. He talks about taking a slow approach where the focus is on building relationships.

He also chats to Steve about working at home with his wife (a fellow freelancer), collaborating on projects, and finding balance (by riding around on tractors every Friday when he volunteers at the local nature reserve).

Me vs. Me - Graphic Designer and Illustrator Kingsley Nebechi

Me vs. Me - Graphic Designer and Illustrator Kingsley Nebechi

When Kingsley landed a job as a creative director, he learned the business skills he’d need to make full-time freelancing work the next time around.

After two and a half years, the freelance work he’d continued to do on the side was taking over.

The second time Kingsley freelanced for Nike, a dream client, he realised “I can’t stay in this job any longer. I just want to be home, focusing all my energy on creating the best artwork I can for things like this.”

Kingsley talks about the organic way his business grew through Instagram and word of mouth, the solo exhibition he hosted in 2017 that got him the gig with Nike, and how he landed the BBC as a client.

He chats about enjoying client relationships, working from home, making time for his own work, and shares his personal motto: to give 100% on everything he’s working on and “double the outcome” each time he does something new.

Documenting the process - Data Visualisation Designer Nadieh Bremer

Documenting the process - Data Visualisation Designer Nadieh Bremer

Nadieh was working full-time when she launched a personal project with a friend. They documented the process closely, sharing in-depth blog posts that explained the hows and whys behind their decisions. Six months later, Google reached out to them and became a first client. And so Nadieh’s freelance story begins.

She talked to friends, read books, got an accountant and started putting herself out there. She kept sharing those in-depth blog posts and soon started speaking at events.

“I’m not a person that does sales,” Nadia says. Instead, she shows what she can do and hopes that people who like it will get in touch.

And it’s working for her this far. Tune in to hear her story.

A wandering journey - Graphic Designer and Web Designer Iain Cameron

A wandering journey - Graphic Designer and Web Designer Iain Cameron

Iain’s in his fifth decade now and freelancing for the second time around. During his first stint, he painted blackboards for pubs, restaurants and shops. He started from scratch with a small portfolio and went door-to-door until he’d built a full-time business. And then, in 1996, Iain moved to Copenhagen with his Danish girlfriend.

These days, he’s designing graphics, websites and illustrations for clients who usually find him via Google. He runs a couple of side projects around his business and tries to enjoy the Danish culture of “working very hard but also making sure they take time off.”

For Iain, that means no work on Monday mornings. “It reminds me that I have a choice,” he says.

Iain chats to Steve about how he taught himself on Lynda.com, built up his website, learned to work better with clients and found time for personal projects.
