Brian McLaughlin (Live at Ascent in Orlando, FL)

Brian McLaughlin (Live at Ascent in Orlando, FL)

    Tune in to hear:

    - How does Brian McLaughlin’s entrepreneurial journey fit into the mold of Campbell’s Hero’s Journey?

    - What was Brian’s “call to adventure,” or his impetus for creating Redtail, and how did he take this leap?

    - Is this “call to adventure” for entrepreneurs, writ large, often about coming up with a practical solution to a particular problem they are facing?

    - What needs to be in place before an entrepreneur takes a leap and who should or shouldn’t go into business for themselves? How should people decide whether to accept or refuse a call to adventure?

    - Who were some of the mentors Brian McLaughlin found along the way and what role did they fill?

    - Did Brian have mentors who gave him support and advocated for him, as well as those who were critical of him when he fell short and gave him tough love?

    - How did Brian get the courage to surround himself with people who would call him out on any nonsense?

    - At what point in the Redtail journey was he most scared and how did this ordeal shape and mold both Brian and his business?

    - What has been the overall impact of his newfound financial abundance and how is he thinking through it so he can enjoy the best parts of this windfall while avoiding the worst parts?

    - What leadership lessons is Brian bringing to Orion and how does he keep his entrepreneurial drive alive in a much larger organization like this?

    Working For Yourself

    Working For Yourself

WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT TODAY? Working for yourself. We think that many people are very capable of pulling this off, but some don’t naturally have what it takes. We talk about how you can see if you’re ready to take the next step in self-employment for your career success by taking a simple assessment during this podcast.

    WHAT TOPICS DO WE COVER?

    * Why is working for yourself getting more popular?

    * Some stats from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics

    * What is “Gig Work” and what is a “Gig Economy”

    * Examples of self-employment opportunities

    * A story about Kelli’s switch to starting her own business

    * Chuck Fresh, our voice artist, is highlighted

    * Are you ready to be an entrepreneur? The self-assesment - Good Luck!

    WHAT’S THE TAKE-AWAY?

Working for yourself is a great way to soar in career success. Growing and managing your business can be very rewarding - IF you have the right stuff going into that journey. You can’t do it 'half-assed’ - but a lot of people try, and then fail. How can you pull it off? We give you the clues.

    WE USED THESE RESOURCES:

Besides our experiences that directly relate to this topic, we found the following resources very helpful in preparing for this episode:

    WHO ARE DAVE AND KELLI?

An entrepreneur and intrapreneur duo with street smarts, ‘preneurial’ chops, and a penchant for storytelling.

Dave and Kelli met as teenagers and have a life-long story of their own. They took separate and contrasting career paths, both struggling with challenges and celebrating their career successes differently.

Over the years, they noticed similarities in their stories about their work, the people they interacted with, and how business was conducted. Kelli, who “worked for the man like a dog for decades,” and Dave, who “started or ran businesses all of his life,” quickly realized there is substantial value for others in those combined experiences. The “My Job Here Is Done” Podcast is the result.

    HOW TO WORK WITH US

Ultimately, you’re building a great business or moving up the career ladder of success, and we absolutely know we can help!

If you like what you hear in the podcast, we have more to share with companies that we work with.

With the foundation of business experience from Dave and Kelli as a team, in concert with subject matter experts from the rich roster of smart people in our network, we have put these goals, culture themes, and operational processes you hear on the podcast to the test - and they work.

What do I want my days to look like? - UI/UX Design Consultant Rafal Tomal

What do I want my days to look like? - UI/UX Design Consultant Rafal Tomal

Rafal taught himself design and started freelancing around his schoolwork at age 16. When he moved from Poland to the United States at 18, and with zero contacts and no design qualification, he landed a full-time job as a developer.

Rafal progressed within the company, designing for some of the biggest websites and blogs out there, all while continuing with freelance work on the side. Until, eventually, he left the job to focus on his business and his personal brand full time.

He formed a small agency with friends later, before leaving because his days were filling up with project management tasks rather than design work.

These days, Rafal’s running a one-person design studio (with help from assistants and other specialists) and selling digital products and courses. “It’s not for everyone,” he says. “But don’t quit too soon. Give yourself a chance to see what’s really out there.”

Be a good craftsman - Audio Producer Matthew Walker

Be a good craftsman - Audio Producer Matthew Walker

Matthew left uni in 2009, right after the financial crash. Ready to find a way to combine his love for music and games, he started freelancing immediately, picking up small projects and commissions, getting involved with whatever he could outside of his full-time job.

But it wasn’t until 2016, after he was made redundant, that Matthew went freelance full-time. He had plenty of good contacts and some work in the pipeline, and things snowballed from there. As his clients grew so did he, and he began picking up referrals the more he got his name out there.

He doesn’t have plans to grow his business to be any bigger than him. He simply wants to be a good craftsman, he says, and he’s very happy that he’s able to provide for his family while doing work he loves.

Allow the failures. They're the lessons - Brand and Marketing Designer Nik Jones

Ready for a career change in her mid-30s, Nik landed an internship with a local design company. She took a risk and went freelance soon after, with only 1 client on her books and no cash to back her up.

It worked for a while, and then Nik ended up back in employment with a boss she didn’t respect. It didn’t take long for her to return to the freelance world, and this time she came to it with fresh eyes.

Through working with a life coach to overcome burnout and tackle the psychological challenges that self-employment throws up, Nik’s found a way to make freelancing work for her.

It turns out you don’t need to wear shoes at home to trick your brain into thinking you’re at work. You just need to learn to say no.

Making your own rules - Copywriter Robbie King

After working as a creative in an ad agency, where he developed concepts for big brands and worked across a range of media, Robbie was ready for something new.

His work was fun and exciting, but it left him with no time for his own projects. And, while he admired those ahead of him in the industry, Robbie didn’t want to be them. He knew agency life wasn’t for him.

Robbie now works remotely, living in places like Thailand and Bali, where he’ll often spend the morning surfing before he starts work.

He chats to Steve about how and why he made the move, what life is like when you’re on the road, and how he makes freelancing work as a digital nomad.

Get started sooner - Copywriter Leif Kendall

Working in a job he didn’t like with a bully for a manager, Leif was desperate for a way out. But, nearing 30 and expecting his first child, he didn’t have many options.

After discovering copywriting and feeling drawn to it, Leif began freelancing on the side; going to networking events, building up his portfolio with “friend of a friend" gigs, and launching a website, all alongside his full-time job.

It’s 11 years later now, and Leif’s made a career out of copywriting. The late nights and weekend-working might be (mostly) a thing of the past, but work still comes with its struggles.

As well as being freelance, Leif’s the director of ProCopywriters, a small professional association with over 850 members. He chats to Steve about the story behind his successful side project, including how it runs without a single employee and takes up far too much of his time.

Protecting my health - Designer Tatiana Mac

After graduating in 2008 during the Great Recession, Tatiana found herself looking for a next step that would make sense financially. Calling on the design skills she’d picked up as a kid, she started out freelance, sending personalised “Do you need a designer?” emails to everyone she knew.

Tatiana’s come a long way since then, finding her focus as an independent designer who works with accessibility and inclusion in mind.

Hear her talk about speaking internationally, working in a way that allows her to protect her health, and her approach to providing content that’s free to all, but still helps to bring in some cash.
