Seize the moment - Web Developer Tom Hirst

Seize the moment - Web Developer Tom Hirst

Tom began freelancing right out of university after realising that the suit-and-tie life wasn’t for him. 12 years on, he’s built a strong and successful web development business and he’s now ready to branch out and try his hand at other things.

When one of his tweets blew up and gained 2.5 million impressions, Tom seized the moment and wrote an ebook; the first in a lineup of digital products he’s creating to help freelancers get ahead. He’d always wanted to write a book and sell a product and he finds meaning in helping other freelancers to make their way.

Tom shares that story and chats to Steve about finding clients, pricing his services and balancing his time.

Connection and belonging - Speaker and Facilitator Kat Vellos

Connection and belonging - Speaker and Facilitator Kat Vellos

Kat freelanced on the side of her design jobs for years, with work coming in via word of mouth referrals from her large, local community. After designing day and night for years, Kat eventually pulled back on freelancing so that she could spend her free time exploring other creative pursuits.

Later, Kat spent several years writing a book while still working as a designer for companies including Slack and Pandora. After self-publishing that book in January 2020, opportunities and offers began pouring in and Kat’s now freelance full time, speaking and facilitating around the topic of her book — cultivating better friendships in adulthood.

She chats to Steve about finding community and connection, pricing her work, and writing a book and the self-publishing process.

Putting in the work - Designer Oladimeji Ajegbile

Putting in the work - Designer Oladimeji Ajegbile

Oladimeji studied architecture but soon realised he wanted to make his own thing. Not a building or a structure, but a creative business that would free him from the nine-to-five.

Developing the skills he learned in university, Oladimeji taught himself graphic design. He put in the hours to practise and got started by volunteering his services to local businesses.

Today, Oladimeji works globally, offering a variety of design services to clients and creating content to educate and inspire the next generation of creatives.

He chats to Steve about how he meets and keeps clients, why he creates content and how he found balance after burnout.

John’s first client was his mum, a teacher in need of a website so she could offer one-to-one tutoring. Today, after spending four years learning the ropes in an agency, John’s running his own agency as well as three other businesses and online courses.

John worked 18-hour days while he was a full-time employee building his freelance portfolio on the side. Six years later and with everything he’s got going on, John’s enjoying a comfortable working week with plenty of time left over for his young family.

He’s learned to trust his team and step away from the creative work to focus on managing projects and operations. He tells Steve how he’s built standard processes in his business that allow him to delegate easily and well.

When working for free makes sense - Photographer Alexandra Cameron

Alex studied film at university but soon found that the immediacy of photography suited her better. She worked part-time on the side for years while building up her skills and portfolio, often shooting for free or a small amount.

These days, with a strong portfolio including some famous faces, Alex says that she will still work for free sometimes because it pays later on. She chats to Steve about the different ways she’s made money, including from licensing her photos and selling prints.

While she’s definitely got better at negotiating her rates, Alex believes that you have to be in it because you’re passionate about taking good photos. For her, that means capturing portraits of people she admires and believes in. This is her freelance story so far.

The Yorkshire Tea break that didn't end - PR Consultant Sharon Davis

The Yorkshire Tea break that didn't end - PR Consultant Sharon Davis

Sharon has always known that she wanted to do her own thing. Her freelance journey began back in 2010 when she was in her mid-twenties, restless and ready for a change.

After six years freelancing and with plenty of successes (and some failures) under her belt, Sharon felt that call again. She needed something new, or a break at the very least, and so she moved to the middle of the English countryside to take a waitressing job for the summer.

Still there 3 years later, Sharon’s freelancing again, building her PR agency with a small team and running a second business - a networking organisation for women in business in the local area. This is her incredible story so far.

Learning to say no - Branding Expert Bhavini Lakhani

Bhavini didn't want to be freelance. When she came back from maternity,  her role was no longer available and so she had a choice: retrain or take voluntary redundancy.

Bhavini took the redundancy and started out with one freelance client. When the work kept coming in - mostly through friends and family on Facebook - she soon fell in love with the flexibility.

She chats to Steve about finding clients, building a website and social media presence, protecting her family time and learning to say no to the work she doesn’t enjoy.

Bonus episode: Live Q&A with John Espirian (LinkedIn, content marketing and personal branding)

Bonus episode: Live Q&A with John Espirian (LinkedIn, content marketing and personal branding)

Previous podcast guest John Espirian (friend of the show), joined us for a Live Q&A in the Being Freelance community in May.

John is widely known for his “Relentlessly Helpful” approach and he was indeed very generous during this chat. As a content marketing expert and self-confessed LinkedIn nerd, John answered questions from the community around building a personal brand, making quality connections on LinkedIn, and finding ways to do more with the content you’ve already spent time and energy creating.

John’s book, Content DNA, contains a handful of building blocks that will help you define the unique “shape” of your business and then build an online presence around it. It’s available now.

Huge thanks to John for his time and generosity!

Survival skills - Copywriter and Author Sarah Townsend

Survival skills - Copywriter and Author Sarah Townsend

Sarah’s been freelance for more than twenty years now and she says it’s taken her “a damn long time” to get to where she is. She’s gone from saying yes to everything and trying to do it all herself - including raising two children as a single parent - to taking herself seriously as a business owner and finding boundaries, balance and a way to do more than just survive.

These days, after turning fifty, Sarah gives herself Fridays off and outsources the jobs she doesn’t enjoy. She works from the gym (when we’re not in lockdown), where she breaks up her day with exercise and feels energised by the buzz of people around her.

In her book, Survival Skills for Freelancers, released recently in June 2020, Sarah shares the biggest lessons she’s learnt about working for yourself without burning out.

The book has been voted as the next Being Freelance Book Club read for summer 2020, so come and join us in the community to read along.

Add value first - Content Marketer Ross Simmonds

Ross started freelancing on the side of a full-time agency job back in 2013. Fast-forward to today and he’s running his own agency that employs over a dozen people.

Ross was living in his parents’ basement in Nova Scotia when he began building up a roster of small, local clients. Over time, Ross’s portfolio grew to include Fortune 500 companies and some of the fastest-growing startups in the world.

He chats to Steve about how he found clients in the early days, how he’s built his reputation and business, and how he manages his personal brand alongside that of his agency.

The power of choice - Cultural Consultant Marge Ainsley

The power of choice - Cultural Consultant Marge Ainsley

After she hit the ten-year mark in her freelance career, Marge took a step back to reassess. She hired a business coach and began reflecting on her values, her ideal clients and the way she structures her time.

In the process, she discovered the power of choice. The choice to work with clients who share her values. To take a month off every summer. To start a second business that fills a creative hole.

Marge chats to Steve about what she learned from that period of reflection and the changes it brought it about. She also talks about her joint side project, Museum Freelance, and the work they’re doing to support and lobby for freelancers in the Arts and Heritage sector.

An appetite for adventure - Photographer and Videographer Steve Zavitz

An appetite for adventure - Photographer and Videographer Steve Zavitz

Steve began learning his craft in 2008 and took it professional in 2011. His ambition, back then, was to build a name for himself as an action sports photographer in the world of Parkour (freerunning).

Depsite knowing there wouldn’t be much money in it, Steve gave it a go anyway.

And he invested his time into a second niche, too. Calling on his background and contacts within the food industry, he began shooting for restaurants and then built his portfolio as a food photographer from there.

He explains how he presents the two sides of his work online in a way that appeals to both types of client. He also talks about finding work, figuring out what to charge and trying to move on from Instagram and YouTube.

What do I want my days to look like? - UI/UX Design Consultant Rafal Tomal

What do I want my days to look like? - UI/UX Design Consultant Rafal Tomal

Rafal taught himself design and started freelancing around his schoolwork at age 16. When he moved from Poland to the United States at 18, and with zero contacts and no design qualification, he landed a full-time job as a developer.

Rafal progressed within the company, designing for some of the biggest websites and blogs out there, all while continuing with freelance work on the side. Until, eventually, he left the job to focus on his business and his personal brand full time.

He formed a small agency with friends later, before leaving because his days were filling up with project management tasks rather than design work.

These days, Rafal’s running a one-person design studio (with help from assistants and other specialists) and selling digital products and courses. “It’s not for everyone,” he says. “But don’t quit too soon. Give yourself a chance to see what’s really out there.”
