How you podcast doesn't matter... It's how you land!

The Film Nerds are taking a journey over to France this week to examine Matthieu Kassovitz's timeless character study! Hear about the forces in France which gave rise to the "banlieue" - the country's very own projects, how the tensions between French African immigrants and police reached a boiling point in the early 90s, how this powder keg inspired Kassovitz & his close friends to make an artistic statement on this crisis, & much, much more. One of our deepest and most insightful dives into any film yet! You won't want to miss it!

Episode 250: 'C.R.A.Z.Y.' with Guy Branum

It premiered in 2005, propelling Jean-Marc Valée into the next level of his career. In 2015, Toronto critics named it one of the 10 best Canadian films of all time. And in 2022, American viewers can finally see what all the fuss is about. In honor of the late Valée, Pride month, and out 250th episode (!), we’re taking a look at the coming-of-age-and-coming-out story that is C.R.A.Z.Y. along with none other than Guy Branum.

*WARNING: The film we cover this week contains extremely violent content that is discussed during the episode. Please listen carefully to the trigger warnings at the top of the episode, and skip it if you need to!*

Welcome to Screen Tea Podcast! Join your hosts this week as they cover the 2008 French Extremism film Martyrs (directed by Pascal Laugier). There's no sugar coating this one, folks; it's brutal, it's violent, it's horrific...but also, as Lisha harps on, it's beautifully written and contains multitudes (including incredible effects, as you'll hear Jules, erm, dissect). Listen as your hosts debate over the meaning of the ending, the big picture of the film, and how they'll never look at staples the same way again (insert grimace here).

Either way, was it worth the wait?

    Nope.

    • How did someone that svelte ingest stones that big?
    • Why is she blue?
    • How is she so good at singing opera with a belly full of bricks?
    • Chris Tucker, not Chris Rock...What was that?
    • Would you go all night long all night ohhhhhh with Ruby Rhod? How is the great evil making calls from a giant ball of fire?
    • Gary Oldman...The hair? The plastic headpiece? Does anyone else bleed HP sauce?
    • Are you a fan of dungarees?
    • What were you doing at 16? And why weren't you writing The Fifth Element? What was I doing? Pulling another all-nighter searching for the golden warthog on Halo 2, most likely. Worth it.

EP 26: Sam Was Here (2016)

They're baaaaack! After a long run of special episodes, Minki and Tracy get back to their original format and discuss this mysterious horror thriller that piqued Tracy's interest because of the name, but piqued Minki's interest because it was only 75 minutes long and these two recorded late on a Sunday. No time for two hour movies tonight! Things you'll learn in this episode: 1. Tracy misses the days of pagers even though her mom was the only one that ever paged her 2. A cool band from Normandy called Christine created the synth soundtrack to this strange film (go listen) 3. This french film director gave no explanation to what is really happening, but never fear...the hosts have their theories. Check out the discussion about an ominous deserted desert town and a (muscular) traveling salesman who sees a strange red light appear in the sky before getting strange texts on his pager and then attacked by masked assailants. Who is bad? Who is good? What the eff is happening? Is he a prisoner of this town...or of his own mind? Email if you have a different opinion about the movie!

    EP 23: Martyrs (2008)

    EP 23: Martyrs (2008)

What do Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze and Sam Rockwell have in common? No clue. Minki only spied on one of them. But apparently Minki and Tracy want to talk about all three of them for a while before kicking off the convo about this week’s movie. After some chatter about cut-off shirts, scientology and creepy roles that forever change the way you see actors, the hosts discuss this French Extremity film that came out with a barrage of dark and gruesome horror films in the early 2000’s which took torture porn (the ever popular sub-genre in America at the time) to a whole new level. Turns out, many actresses didn’t want to play the two lead roles in this film and it’s not hard to see why. As the director of this film noted, Martyrs and/or French Extremism is not about torture...it’s about pain. Hopefully it’s not painful for you to listen to these two retell this whole movie because it’s one of Tracy’s favorites. Au revoir!

EP 18: We Are The Flesh (2016)

EP 18: We Are The Flesh (2016)

Tracy and Minki watched a porn on Mother’s Day...or so it seems. That’s right—these dedicated hosts ditched their moms to watch and discuss this Mexican horror. There is definitely lots of nudity, close-up shots of genitalia and graphic sex scenes in this unique film. Oh wait, there was also some murder and cannibalism, but definitely less of that in this art-house, surreal erotic horror. Nice camera and lighting work, mixed with a solid portrayal of a mad man who has a very strange desire to return to the safety and warmth of his mother’s womb (HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!) should make up for the strange plot and excessively long scenes, but...not so much. For the most part, this movie doesn’t live up to its name...as a horror. Though, maybe the word “Flesh” was more indicative of all the nakedness. So, tune in to hear them recount this dreamlike, or rather, nightmarish movie.
