"I ask you a little of this childish simplicity, and to bring us luck, let me speak four truly magic words, childhood's 'Open Sesame'...Once upon a time..." -Jean Cocteau
And speaking of those very words, nearly a decade ago, Jasmine was delighted to see that Brows Held High would be discussing not only Jean Cocteau's take on one of her favorite fairytales, but comparing it to the Disney version, both of which she loved. Now, what better way to discuss this movie than inviting Kyle Kallgren himself to join her, Sam, River, Ilana, and Bryan in discussing this film that toes the line between surrealist and familiar, and went on to inspire countless other works of art, including the next part of this double feature...

Garret and Scott debate whether the film maintains topical functionality while also asking if the film now feels more like "homework" than required viewing.

The Special Topics in Media Film Listology season is BACK! After our Communicating Fears in Film Octoberfest, hosts Garret Castleberry and Scott McMurry return to the realm of classic cinema to count down the algorithmic rankings computated by the "McMurry Super Index" (MSI) to determine an alpha populous movie rating system to end all movie rating systems. Having previously completed the "Honorable Mentions" films in contention for elite status, the dialogic duo present the first of many "reveal episodes" to set the table for the next series of filmic conversations. And who says we're just another pretty face?
This week, Cody and Matt take a trip to the beautiful French countryside in search of art, food, culture, and surgery. They discuss the tragedy of beauty standards, the melodrama of one man's guilt, and the absolute buffoonery of one character's musical motif. The boys also dissect a pivotal surgical scene and peel away the layers of what makes this flick such an inspiration to modern horror.
Feed the dogs, pack up the ominous black car, and put on your masks for some Night Howls ooh-la-lunacy.
Thanks for listening!

Today’s movie premiered at Cannes 2022 and was the Cambodian entry for Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars (though it didn’t make it off the shortlist). It follows newcomer’s Park Ji-Min’s Freddie as she returns to Korea for the first time since her adoption as a baby by French parents. Our guest is comedian Josh Johnson, whose new special Up Here Killing Myself is on Peacock. After unpacking this new movie, everyone tries their best at a brand-new (and extremely trivial) movie trivia game about movie time jumps.
