Film Listology: #91 - The Matrix

"What is real? How do you define, real?" In this episode, cohosts Garret Castleberry and Scott McMurry unpack the wide-reaching cultural significance of 1999's The Matrix. Written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, produced and distributed by Warner Bros., The Matrix redirected popular cinema for the 21st Century through its ingenious remixing of philosophy, theology, and mythology baked into a dystopian action film that also functions as a techno-remix of classical tales like Alice in the Looking Glass and The Wizard of Oz. Has The Matrix faded from the popular imaginary, or does its brief legacy suggest a temporally resonant cultural artifact that  continues to inspire new audiences?

    207. Is The Clock Ticking on Major Labels?

    207. Is The Clock Ticking on Major Labels?

The music industry has changed dramatically in recent years, and the role of major record labels has been forever changed. Once beheld as the gatekeepers to stardom,
the rise of  streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have irrevocably changed to landscape of music.
In response, labels went from being gatekeepers to talent partners, focusing on offering  marketing, promotion, and distribution in exchange for a share of the artist's revenue.  Artist development and the art of A&R has been all but completely abandoned.
And with the balance of power shifting towards artists,  they can negotiate better deals and retain greater creative control.

    Film Listology: #97 - L.A. Confidential

This week Special Topics in Media  resumes production on our Film Listology journey with the bad boy grandchild born out of wedlock between Film Noir and Golden Age Hollywood, writer/director Curtis Hanson and co-screenwriter Brian Helgeland's detective potboiler L.A. Confidential. Adapted from the same name novel by James Ellroy, L.A. Confidential reaped considerable word-of-mouth praise from critics and audiences upon release in 1997 but has since fallen under the social radar among contemporary audiences. In a film that introduced American audiences to not one but two rough and tumble Australian imports in Russell Crowe and Guy Pierce, hosts Garret and Scott debate whether this instant classic remains a top shelf rental in the streaming age.

Unveiling the Secrets of the Music Industry with Michael Parisi

Unveiling the Secrets of the Music Industry with Michael Parisi

Dive deep into the heart of the music industry with another enriching episode of "Industry Icons" on Triple M Homegrown. Host Matty O invites Michael Parisi, an industry veteran and host of the new podcast 'Vinyl Tap,' to demystify the complexities of today's ever-changing music landscape.

    The Backstory

Michael Parisi's journey started at the promotions department of Warner Bros. in the early '90s, where he laid the groundwork for what would become a star-studded career. Listen as he takes you back to his early days of orchestrating promo gigs for the legendary Red Hot Chili Peppers on their seminal album, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik." Michael reminisces about his youthful excitement and the challenges of dealing with larger-than-life personalities like Flea and Anthony Kiedis. He even spills a bit of tea on a few borderline-outrageous stories that will make you wish you had backstage access back then.

    A 30-Year Perspective

Fast forward to 2023, and Michael has an established legacy in marketing and A&R positions. He reflects on how the industry has evolved over the last three decades, focusing on the shift in emphasis away from live music and stage performances for budding artists. Michael passionately argues that if you can't command a live audience, your chances of making it big are slim. He elaborates on this by discussing what it truly takes to capture attention in today's digital-first era.

The Current State of the Industry

It's a different ballgame for emerging artists today. Michael details the unique challenges that artists now face, from navigating social media algorithms to understanding streaming metrics. However, his fundamental advice remains the same: maximum stage time and self-promotion are crucial. "It’s your job to build an audience no matter how. If it’s playing 50 dodgy acoustic gigs on a Tuesday night in Wesleyanne in Northcote, then so be it," he advises.

    Stories and Anecdotes

Fans of Australian band Regurgitator will be riveted by Michael's experiences dealing with their enigmatic frontman, Quan, whose unconventional approaches to the industry have shocked him time and time again. Plus, don't miss the jaw-dropping backstage stories of playing pool with rock legends like The Rolling Stones and Rage Against the Machine.

    A Game to Remember

To round off the episode, Michael plays an entertaining game of 'Write, Party, Dinner' featuring Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, and Oasis. Who would he choose to manage, party with, and invite over for dinner? His answers might just surprise you.

This comprehensive episode is not only a walk down memory lane but also a practical guidebook for anyone aspiring to carve a niche in the world of music. Tune in for an experience filled with invaluable lessons, industry secrets, and untold stories that only a seasoned professional like Michael Parisi can provide.

Film Listology: #101 - Mad Max: Fury Road

Film Listology: #101 - Mad Max: Fury Road

Rounding out the "Honorable Mentions" list of acclaimed films, hosts Garret Castleberry and Scott McMurry examine the most current film to rank on the McMurry Super Index, 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Australian auteur George Miller, Fury Road expands the post-apocalyptic mythology established by Miller nearly forty years prior with 1979's gear head future shock thriller, Mad Max. The film required nearly twenty-years of pre-production and principle photography before making its debut on the big screen. The tumultuous  production  stalled numerous times, and the behind-the-scenes stories comprising the film's history are nearly as shocking as Fury Road's aggressive performances and bombastic stunt work. Much of Fury Road 's magic lies in its transcendent reception among broad audiences and film critics who rank it among the best films of the twenty-first century. The dialogic duo jostle between the film's narrative and meta-narrative qualities in an anthropological effort to exhume a quantifiable appraisal for Mad Max: Fury Road's cultural significance factor.
