Shirleon joins Melvin in discussing this month's Patron-Pick, On Golden Pond! This Oscar-winning feature stars Katherine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Jane Fonda in a complex-yet-comedic tale of old-age, generational trauma, and the endurance of love. Tune in to hear the two discuss all manner of topics from this deceptively deep story!

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 28-minutes discussing the importance, or lack thereof, of award shows, both with film and literature, and how it's all a glorified expression of curation. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • On Golden Pond is very much about the inevitability of change alongside the hardship of relational stagnation. It's a simple story with rich, complex dynamics.
    • Norman is undoubtedly a curmudgeon, but he's also a ventilator; someone who releases tension through biting comments.
    • Ethel stands as a titan of female strength against a cavalcade of frustrated and emotional characters.
    • On Golden Pond explores the dichotomy between fear and love, and how the two struggle to endure with one another.
    • Norman's character showcases a comforting depiction of the difficulty in self-identification. Even at 80 years old he is still struggling to find out who he is, and it's through the kindness of those around him that he is able to persevere in this identity crisis. Both Melvin and Shirleon find this comforting as individuals who struggle with their identity.
    • Discussing various iconography throughout the film, including the loons and the deadfall.
    • Melvin appreciates that the leads of On Golden Pond are older folk, finding that they're more relatable and more interesting than if they were just a buncha youngin's.

Title:  Validation Games: Why the Roys (and Maybe You) Can't Stop Seeking Approval

Craving a podcast that dissects the human psyche with the ferocity of a media mogul battling for his throne? Buckle up, because Jana and Jason are peeling back the layers of HBO's "Succession," a show where family drama is a high-stakes chess match played with billion-dollar pawns.

Forget sunshine and rainbows. This podcast plunges you into the Roy family's toxic cesspool of ambition, betrayal, and an insatiable hunger for their father's approval. Prepare to be both horrified and fascinated as Jana and Jason dissect each sibling's ruthless maneuver for control, revealing the universal truth about how far we'll go for a pat on the back, even if it means sacrificing our integrity.

This isn't just a recap; it's a psychological autopsy. Each character's twisted desire for validation becomes a mirror reflecting our own vulnerabilities. You'll question your social media addiction, examine the fine line between family and fortune, and maybe even recognize yourself in Greg the Egg's awkward brilliance.

But wait, there's more! Jana and Jason celebrate the show's genius - the sharp writing, the nuanced performances, and the undeniable parallels between the Roys' ruthless climb and our own everyday struggles. You'll laugh, you'll cringe, you'll be left wanting more.

So, whether you're a "Succession" superfan or simply intrigued by the dark side of the human condition, tune in and join Jana and Jason as they explore:

    • The psychology of power plays: How a single nod from Logan Roy can unleash chaos and reshape destinies.
    • The price of validation: When family becomes a battlefield for approval, who truly wins?
    • The seductive trap of backstabbing: Is victory worth the soul it costs?
    • The brilliance of character design: From Kendall's tortured ambition to Shiv's icy pragmatism, every Roy resonates with a chilling truth.
    • Lessons for living lucky: Can we learn from the Roys' mistakes and build success on a foundation of trust and collaboration?

This podcast is your ticket to the front row of "Succession's" twisted brilliance. Hit play, let Jana and Jason guide you through the opulent corridors and grimy back alleys of the Roy empire, and emerge with a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you.

Remember, in the game of thrones, everyone bleeds. But with Jana and Jason by your side, you just might survive the bloodbath with your sanity (and humanity) intact.

    Episode 159: Many Men

    Episode 159: Many Men

Ever had one of those days when even your bed gives up on you? That's what kickstarted my weight loss journey, and I'm sharing the laughs and struggles along the way, all while juggling the tangled wires of family life, including our daughter Nila's health battles. Then, the holiday spirit brings its own set of surprises, like an unanticipated guest who quite literally overstayed their welcome, teaching us a thing or two about patience and the unexpected joys (and trials) of family gatherings.

Navigating the choppy waters of family dynamics and the ripple effects of our actions, we dissect the complexities of relationships and the impact they have on the generations to come. From the art of gift-giving to the pitfalls of avoidance and misinformation, this discussion sheds light on how our personal accountability, or lack thereof, shapes the future of our children's interpersonal skills. Plus, we don't shy away from the controversies in the entertainment world, touching on the Joe Budden saga, and offering a candid take on the challenges of standing by your values in the face of adversity.

The streets have their own language, and sometimes it's a language of violence. Reflecting on the sobering realities of feuds within street culture, we dissect the tensions between Yo Gotti and Young Dolph, and the broader implications of street violence on communities. Moving beyond the music, we explore the harrowing impacts of toxic relationships and the importance of maintaining one's integrity, both in the public eye and in personal encounters. So whether you're here for the real talk on business ethics, or personal tales of overcoming life's hurdles, this episode offers a raw and honest look at life's intricate mosaic.

First, Lauren tells us the tale of the most haunted house in Mississippi, the McRaven House, and the mayhem that occurs throughout its history. Then, Kenzie brings us the *insane* case of James Billiot, or Machiavelli, or Jesus, or maybe even Attila the Hun, and we try to unravel the madness surrounding this case. The Devil didn’t go to Georgia, he went to Mississippi.
