The Way to Life - Audio

The Way to Life - Audio
In this sermon for the First Sunday in Lent, Pastor Chris explores the cause of death, chaos, and evil in the world, as well as God's plan for fixing these issues. As these ideas are explored, Pastor Chris explains that human rebellion has led to a world of death and destruction that can only be made overcome by the life offered in Jesus. Jesus, having lived the life that humans can't, stands ready to offer life to those who will follow him. This life comes at a cost--Jesus death--which is what Lent prepares observant for. The hope throughout the season of Lent is that humans reflect upon the ways that they personally have participated in the sin and death of the world. All of these ideas are explored by looking first at the purpose humans were created to fulfill. Second, by looking at how human rebellion has undermined this purpose, and three by looking at how Jesus' temptation in the wilderness was the moment when Jesus remained faithful to God unlike any human before him.

The Cross and the Gravity of Sin

The Cross and the Gravity of Sin
"The truth is that all of us come to worship – at least in large measure – because we want to feel better: about ourselves, our family, our work, our health, our world, the condition of our souls and psyches. If we are willing to confess and face the reality of Sin, we want to do so only followed by a full-throated assurance of pardon. In this series on the crucifixion of Christ, I want to stress that we can only face the awfulness of the crucifixion if we understand the power of Sin and Evil the cross overcomes."
Rev. Dr. Larry Hayward preaches on Reformation Sunday. The Scripture lesson comes from Genesis 3:1-7; Psalm 51:2, 4, 12-13; Romans 5:12, 14, 15b, 18-19.

    Good for Food

    Good for Food
In eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the woman and man were not giving into or falling into some base, lower nature; rather they were rising, extending themselves, aspiring to exceed and excel. They were responding to all that is good and noble, hopeful and helpful, not base or demeaning: Nourishment, beauty, knowledge. What’s not to like? Larry Hayward preaches today on Genesis 3:1-7 and Matthew 4:1-11.

    Identity: Part 5 - Why I Do What I Do - Audio
Once Adam and Eve saw themselves through a serpent-inspired lens, their behavior changed from obedience to disobedience. What we think in our hearts--particularly concerning God's Word, God's character, and our view of self--influences what we do. Cornell Cannon continues the series on Identity by describing how our self image affects our actions.
