Are genetically engineered seeds harming human health?

Are genetically engineered seeds harming human health?

American agrochemical firm Monsanto was the world’s largest maker of genetically engineered seeds until merged with German pharma-biotech giant Bayer in 2018. Its Roundup Ready® seeds, introduced twenty-five years ago, are still reshaping farms, landscapes and ecosystems all over the world.

Bart Elmore is a professor of environmental history at Ohio State University, as well as an award-winning author. Alasdair spoke to him about his 2021 book on the history of Monsanto, Seed Money: Monsanto's Past and Our Food Future.

For the first time, medical professionals at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have performed the first successful pig heart transplant into an adult human. The patient, 57-year old David Bennett, was diagnosed with terminal heart disease and was ineligible for a conventional heart transplant. So instead the U.S. FDA approved for Bennett to receive the emergency genetically modified pig heart surgery. In this week's episode: Let's Talk Wild EP 3 - Who Wants A Pig Heart? The First Successful Pig Heart Transplant Into An Adult Human,  I give you guys my thoughts on this procedure.

    The future of food

    The future of food

A major threat of climate change is to future food security. With a projected Australian population of 35.9 million in 2050, and rising average temperatures of up to 4°C, how will agricultural science work to feed the future? Should we lean on gene technology or traditional methods? Professor Rachel Burton (Head of the Plant Science Department & Chief Investigator ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology at Waite Campus, University of Adelaide) and Dr Angela Pattison (Research Scientist at the University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute) join our host Dr Deborah Devis (Geneticist & Science Journalist  at The Royal Institution of Australia) to discuss.

    Genetic Engineering... Would You?

    Genetic Engineering... Would You?

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought “I wish I had a different hair color or eye color.” What about more muscle, less body fat? What about more brain power, better eyesight, more empathy?

Contained within our genetic code is the raw untapped potential of the human condition. Within that same code is the negative potential of that condition where cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s are switch away.

CRSIPR cas9 is the technology that gives us the change to eradicate these diseases while also making some very fundamental changes to human beings.

Are we ready to play God? What are the long-term consequences of this technology and the genetic editing that comes from it? Who is responsible for policing this technology and who should decide what edits can be made?

The ethical conversation is one we cannot cover in a short podcast, but this week Janna and Evan discuss just a few of the ethical and global implications of genetic editing and what they would change about themselves if given the chance.

Chicken Bioreactor: Engineered Chickens Which Produce Human Proteins with Dr Lissa Herron

Chickens that are genetically modified to produce human proteins in their eggs can offer a cost-effective method of producing certain types of drugs, research suggests. Researchers say the findings provide sound evidence for using chickens as a cheap method of producing high quality drugs for use in research studies and, potentially one day, in patients.

    Episode 006: California Ballot Initiative - Labeling GMOs - April 7, 2012

    Episode 006: California Ballot Initiative - Labeling GMOs - April 7, 2012
Aaron is joined by Anet Aguilar, who's been out there working hard to get an initiative on the California ballot that would require all GMO foods to be labeled. Anet talks about how GMOs affect not just the U.S., but also Mexico, as corn is a staple food there. The two, having learned about genetically modified corn from very different backgrounds, share their knowledge on the issue and let the listeners know what they can do to stand up to Monsanto.

    GMOs: The Twisted Truth

    GMOs: The Twisted Truth
Although it purports to be based on solid science and the open flow of information on which science depends, the massive venture to reconfigure the genetic core of the world’s food supply has substantially relied on the propagation of falsehoods. Its advancement and very survival have been crucially and chronically dependent on the misrepresentation of reality — to the extent that more than thirty years after the creation of the first genetically engineered plant, the vast majority of people the world-over (including most government officials, journalists, and even scientists) continue to be misled about the important facts. Moreover, contrary to what people would expect, the biotechnology industry has not been the main source of the deceptions. Instead, the chief misrepresentations have been issued by respected government agencies and eminent scientists and scientific institutions.

    Glyphosate: The Scourge of Mankind

    Glyphosate: The Scourge of Mankind
The United States faces a health care crisis today due to rapidly rising health care costs. Why does the US spend so much more on health care than any other country, with so little to show for it? Dr Seneff posits that the US population is being chronically poisoned by a toxic chemical, glyphosate, that is pervasive in the food supply. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup. Because the government falsely believes that glyphosate is nearly harmless to humans, they have been very careless in monitoring it and have allowed it to permeate not only the food and water supply but also cotton products like Tampons and sterile cotton gauze, biological drugs, and, most importantly, vaccines. Dr Seneff believes that glyphosate is the main contributor to the epidemic of debilitating autoimmune diseases, including autism, Alzheimer's disease, Celiac disease, lupus, food allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, cancers, and obesity.
