    Episode 314: Bare "Naked Gun"

    Episode 314: Bare "Naked Gun"

Omg. "The Naked Gun" is so good. Watch it. Watch all three of them. Watch anything with Leslie Nielsen. They're all worth it. But "The Naked Gun" holds a special place in our hearts. In the same style as "Airplane," this movie nails slapstick. We pair the movie with a Chardonnay from Straight Shooter.

    Metacritic Score: 76/100

Movie Sync Notes: We streamed "The Naked Gun" on Paramount Plus. We start "The Naked Gun" 6:55 into the pod, and push play on part two 58:14 into the pod.

Episode 14: Reflections on characters and themes in “Cool Hand Luke”

Episode 14: Reflections on characters and themes in “Cool Hand Luke”

After drunkenly removing a set of parking metres from their posts, our hero Luke is sentenced to a period on the chain gang in 1950s Florida. Once there, he influences and inspires his fellow inmates through a series of defiant gestures and acts, but things take a more serious turn when Luke is refused permission to attend his mother’s funeral…

    Into the Night

    Into the Night
We worked overtime and then some, burning every ounce of midnight oil we had, when it came to bringing you our very first episode of 2022 on Into the Night, John Landis's 1985 nocturnal romp. But before we get there...we discussed, for likely far longer than necessary, why exactly Valkyrie, the laughable 2008 historical drama, is perhaps the "greatest middle school movie ever" before diving face first into a Blue Plate Special involving thoughts on last year's Annette, a new segment within a segment called Baggage Claim where we gradually traverse our way through the Airport franchise, and finish off with a celebration of the lives and careers of Hollywood legends Sidney Poitier and Peter Bogdanovich. This week's subject film is every bit as scattershot as the rest of that intro, as it includes but is not limited to an unexpected but terrific pairing of Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer, the thrilling comedic aesthetics of 80s Landis, a two scene villain turn from the legendary David Bowie, and more director cameos than a DGA sponsored picnic. Nightmare at Noon

    Nightmare at Noon
We welcome Brett back on this episode. We dive into the world of APEs, unnecessary helicopter chases, breakfast beers, car accident fights, a KFC imposter, George Kennedy continuing to owe someone favors, green blood, a drive-in shootout, the longest horse chase ever filmed, and god so many other things. Brett watched the trailer and said he was going to see this film no matter what. Will he be glad he did, or will those fateful words come back to haunt him?

Ep. #326 - Uninvited, with Gillian Flynn

Ep. #326 - Uninvited, with Gillian Flynn

Our guest this week is Gillian Flynn, bestselling author of Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, and Dark Places, showrunner for Amazon's Utopia, screenwriter of Widows and adaptations of her own work, winner of the Edgar Award, and BAFTA nominee. We have no idea why she agreed to do this either.

But we're happy she did, because for our second and final SHOCKTOBER 2020 movie, our horror-aficionado guest picked Uninvited, and it was amazing! (to be clear, this is not THE Uninvited from 2009, which The Flop House already covered, or, for that matter, The Uninvited from 1944, about ghosts and Ray Milland. This is the 1987 direct-to-video one about the mutant killer house cat).

Also! If you're listening on the day of release TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (6PDT/9EDT) for our YouTube livestream version of our touring show! We'll be doing presentations, talking Exorcist II, taking questions from Twitter, and raising money for charity! For full info, go here.
