The Rev. Que English on the power of and need for interfaith efforts

The Rev. Que English on the power of and need for interfaith efforts

During the 2023 holiday season, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints collaborated with religious organizations on more than 60 projects serving some 42,000 children in the New York metro area. One of many leaders supporting this interfaith partnership is the Reverend Que English, who has said that this alliance is a model of how “we come together to bring hope” in a divided world.

The Rev. English has served as the director of the Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services since 2021; previously, she served as the deputy director of faith-based initiatives for the Governor’s Office in the State of New York. She is married to the Rev. Tim English, the senior pastor of Bronx Christian Fellowship in Bronx, New York. With a passion for empowering, training and educating, the Rev. Que English joins this episode of the Church News podcast to talk about the power of — and the need for — interfaith efforts.

The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and executive editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.

Today's Bible verse is Joshua 3:13 from the King James Version.

Episode 52: As the spies share the good news with the people of Israel, hope rises in their hearts. With hope rising in the people, a confidence, given by God, is rising in the heart of Joshua. So Joshua leads the people to the bank of the Jordan river and instructs the Levites to go before them into the river carrying the Ark of the Covenant, the moment their feet enter the Jordan, the waters part, and Israel is led across the river on dry land just like they were years ago under Moses.

158: Asking Governors and Leaders to Give

158: Asking Governors and Leaders to Give

In this episode, I delve into the strategic importance of encouraging governors, trustees, and senior leaders in our schools to contribute themselves to fundraising projects.

With insights from the IDPE Benchmarking report offering valuable guidance to navigate this compelling topic, I uncover the importance of leadership giving, the role of governors and senior leaders in setting an example and practical ideas for fundraisers to encourage their support.

Tune in and discover how to empower and engage key stakeholders in supporting your school's fundraising endeavours.

    Key lessons from this episode:

    1. It is not about the size of the gift, but rather the participation rate of governors and senior leaders in giving to fundraising projects.

    2. The focus should be on demonstrating commitment to and belief in the project, rather than the amount given.

    3. It is important to create a culture of giving within the school, starting with governors and senior leaders leading by example.

    4. Highlighting the participation of governors and senior leaders in fundraising projects can motivate other donors to follow suit.

"And don't forget that if you want to be thinking strategically, all of us need to create the space to breathe, the time to learn, and the courage to adapt." — Juliet Corbett

On this episode, Lera and Cullan chat with Tatiana Tkacheva, a research fellow at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, about the strategies of the autocrat in dealing with regional governors. In her paper, she and her co-authors attempt to answer this question by using the example of premature withdrawals and dismissals of Russia’s regional governors from office. Tatiana also talks about her previous publications about the United Russia (UR) party and their declining popularity in Russia. Thanks for listening! David and His Mighty Men - The Books of 2 Samuel & 1 Chronicles

David and His Mighty Men - The Books of 2 Samuel & 1 Chronicles

In this Bible Story, we meet the mighty men of David. Their character, skill and devotion separate them from the rest of the soldiers of Israel, and David relies on them as he takes back Israel from the Philistines. This story is inspired by 2 Samuel 5, 23:13-23 & 1 Chronicles 11. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is 2 Samuel 5:8 from the King James Version.

Episode 98: David was now King over all Israel, but he did not govern the people alone. He had thirty mighty men who supported him, three of which he appointed as governors over the land. These three Jashobeam, Eleazar, and Shama were loyal men of renown standing fierce against the Philistines and standing firm for the good of the people. These mighty men risked their lives for their King and for their fellow man. They are examples for us of what it means to be men of valor.

    The learnings from a tragedy

Content Warning - in this episode, Smita Jamdar and Geraldine Swanton are discussing a judgment handed down in Bristol County Court in a really sad case involving the tragic suicidal death of a student, Natasha Abrahart.  This case gives us some judicial interpretation of some areas of law that affect institutions more widely, so it is worth thinking about what we could learn from it.
