Drawify - The Visual Storytelling Platform

https://drawify.com/ is a web-based platform for visual storytellers and it allows its users to tell their unique stories by weaving together drawings contributed by numerous visual practitioners - the drawifiers. I had the pleasure to interview Axelle Vanquaillie - one of the Drawify founders and we spoke about what problem does this platform promise to solve, who are its users, and what are plans and challenges that the product team is dealing with at the moment.

    Axelle Vanquaillie

Hi, Nice to meet you. I’m Axelle, living in Belgium but feeling at home pretty much anywhere in the world. My visual story started in 2010. I had been an HR and communications professional for 18 years when I discovered the power of (live) visual storytelling for corporate purposes. Since then, I’ve been traveling around the world helping companies to translate their stories into drawings. I love to combine my passion for drawing with my strategic skills. In an age of information overload, my mission is to create drawings that have the almost magical capacity to clarify the most complex strategic content in a way that transforms the viewer’s perspective.

My mission is to enable anyone in the world to convey a message with a drawing, which has driven me to write a book, ‘Start to draw’. For those who prefer not to draw themselves, I founded Drawify in 2020.

    50 - Jens Nordmann

    Jens Nordmann

Jens is a Graphic Recorder and Artist living in Berlin.

Besides this, he is doing Illustration, animation, and giving workshops on visualization for beginners and advanced practitioners.

Besides that, he was working with painting, sculpture, sound, dance, and performance.

He loves any kind of improvisation and chance operations.

Despite his nonexisting Latin skills he still believes that:

Nihil est in intellectu quod non sit prius in sensu

(translates as "Nothing is in the intellect that was not first in the senses").

He’s a sucker for metaphors and thinks they are multivitamin shots of information for the brain. They are shortcuts that help see things with humor and from an unexpected perspective. Our friendly bugs in the system.

Jens is convinced that visualization is way more than icon juggling. It brings up powerful images that can help shape our mindset and change our behavior in any kind.

Jens is super excited about any technique to invite our brain to change and to emerge new things.

Therefore he is very interested in projects with a systemic background, Hypnotherapy, Gestalt therapy, constellation work, psychodrama... an endless list.

    43 - Heather Martinez

    Heather Martinez

Heather Leavitt Martinez is a visual practitioner, art coach, and lettering artist living in Southwest Colorado.

After studying with master sign painters, graffiti artists, and calligraphers - which she continues to do today - she decided to translate what she learned to teach other visual practitioners the tradecraft of breaking down any lettering styles into the tools we use when leading from the front of the room and virtually.

Heather believes that what we write on the wall is more than mere handwriting - letters are the building blocks of communication. Get that right while executing with confidence, and visual practitioners can then focus on other aspects of the work.

As a co-founder of the Visioneering team near Washington, DC, Heather helped develop and maintain a 6-person team of visual practitioners in 2014. Heather has presented hands-on lettering breakout sessions at two IFVP (International Forum of Visual Practitioners) conferences and at EuViz Denmark.

Heather was one of the Keynote speakers at VizConf 2019 in Melbourne, Australia at ENVISION 2020 and is a Neuland Ambassador.

To help get you started in improving your lettering, Heather offers a variety of free and low-cost resources at www.LetsLetterTogether.com

    Lindsay Wilson

Born in Germany, moved to Texas where I grew up, and went to university. I hold a degree in Speech Communication and in Graphic Design. I moved to Chicago shortly after graduating to start a career in advertising. That plan didn't work out so well. Instead, a family friend introduced me to a company called Capgemini Ernst and Young and the rest is as you say, history. As a contractor back in 2002, I was introduced to the MG Taylor methodology and to scribing. I spent the next 10 years as an independent contractor helping organize and deliver events for corporate clients all over the world. It was a blast. I learned so much. It was like getting an MBA through osmosis.

In 2011, I had the opportunity to start a company with two other amazing visual thinkers and independent contractors Dusty Folwarzcny and Ryan Robinson. We talked for months about how we wanted to approach things and what our vision would be. In October of 2011, we launched Ink Factory out of Ryan's live/work loft in Chicago. We've grown the business now to 11 full-time employees and continue to work towards accomplishing our vision. Which is a world where visuals are the universal language.

The journey has been a blast. The clients, the places we have been, the friends we have made - it's all been amazing. And a lot of hard work.

We will be celebrating our 9th birthday this year!!

My role at Ink Factory is currently COO. I oversee the day-to-day operations and internal strategies, manage the financials, and oversee a team of three administrative support. As a small business, you tend to wear a lot of hats. And this could not be more true for me. I am a visual note-taker at heart. I love to deliver work and work directly with clients. I am also project manager for events, handle HR operations, and can often be called the Chief Prank Officer. Never a dull moment at Ink Factory.

I would love to talk about Think Like Ink. Which is our educational arm of Ink Factory. 2020 was going to be our year for teaching in-person workshops. We even built out a brand new studio to facilitate this. However, 2020 had different plans. Like with any sour situation, we are looking for the silver lining, and the silver lining with the shutdown has been the ability to offer our workshop across time zones and borders. We've been able to teach just over 20 workshops this year and have global representation in each workshop.

I love to bring levity to any situation and my favorite color is grey!

    Meg Melvin

Meg Melvin is a visual storyteller and digital nomad, from Aotearoa New Zealand. After 30 years of experience across many industries, four cities, and 3 countries, she is now running her business, Sketchability, from co-working spaces and cafes around her hometown city of Wellington.

A life-long doodler, three years ago she discovered that her superpower was actually interpreting what she hears into engaging visual stories. Visual stories enable the teller of the story, and the audience, to find a common understanding, share ideas and knowledge, or spark conversations that might not otherwise happen.

Her passions include other peoples' dogs, wild swimming all year round, great coffee, artisan crafts, and the finest whiskey.

Meg welcomes inquiries from organisations, or people, who work for the benefit of others, community impact, or social equity and justice.

    Mathias Weitbrecht

Mathias Weitbrecht is a European pioneer in the field of visual facilitation.

Since 2005 he has developed products, business models, and teams - always aligned with a strong purpose-driven approach. He is founder and CEO of Visual Facilitators GmbH with a team of 35 visual strategists, graphic recorders and facilitators, as well as the author of the book “Co-Create! Das Visualisierungs-Buch” (Wiley Publ).

As a lover of aesthetics and visual inspiration, his creativity is nourished by an awareness of and connectedness with the inner and outer worlds. While being a skilled and experienced visual facilitator in large scale and SME businesses his full creative power flows when including all of the interiors, energies, and transformative powers that life offers. Here his ability to oversee massive amounts of information as well as small details and inherent patterns is a gift to the world.

The above abilities and his deep curiosity are appreciated by Mathias’ team and project partners as valuable add-ons to existing business models, consulting, coaching, and transformation processes. Additionally, he brings in a truly global mind, both internally as well as (having traveled to more than 80 countries) externally and he is blessed with the audacity that little can change a lot. He loves to support people, especially the young generation.

Mathias has an entrepreneurial mind that enabled him to build an amazing brand called Visual Facilitators. In this field, he has graphically supported world-class meetings, events, and talks. The art of doing this is not only that there are aesthetics in each image, but that it represents the complexity in its connectedness of related topics, problems, and solutions.
