What Is Your Grief Story? | An Excerpt From My Book

What Is Your Grief Story? | An Excerpt From My Book

In the quiet moments of reflection, we often find ourselves face-to-face with our deepest losses. Join me today as I embark on a unique episode of "Grieving Voices," where I read an excerpt from my  self-published book, "The Guided Heart: Moving Through Grief and Finding Spiritual Solace." Let's discover how my own experiences with loss from a young age have unknowingly mirrored the language of grief recovery even before I formally encountered it.

In this heartfelt session, I explore:

    • The personal impact of losing my father at eight years old.
    • How grief manifested in different aspects of my life.
    • The therapeutic power of journaling during my high school years.
    • Insights into emotional unavailability and its effects on family dynamics.

In this episode, I also draw connections between the content in my book written before learning about grief recovery methods and the concepts found within them. I share thoughts on letting go, acknowledging pain points, and coping mechanisms that can span decades.

Grief isn't selective; it touches all corners of life, including relationships, careers, finances, and more. The way we cope can either mend or strain our emotional health. My story is not unique – it echoes many others’ struggles with life after loss.

Reflect on your path by following along in an exercise I propose—writing down your feelings to confront the emotional weight you carry. It’s not just cathartic; it’s a step toward understanding and clarity.

As we continue exploring various dimensions of grief throughout future episodes of "Grieving Voices," remember that each person’s path toward healing is unique. Whether through reconnecting with faith or finding solace within oneself after experiencing profound losses—as I did—the goal remains constant: acknowledging our pain so that we may embrace life more fully and presently.

How Do I Deal With the Anger I Feel?

How Do I Deal With the Anger I Feel?

Today's episode of GrievingVoices takes a deep dive into the complex emotion of anger, especially for us Human Design Manifestor-types navigating loss and trauma. I open up about my battle with anger following life's curveballs and how it can be misunderstood or mishandled.

As someone who has walked through the fire of personal loss and trauma, I've learned firsthand how anger can be both destructive and transformative. It's not just an outburst; it’s a signal calling us to introspection.

Why does this affect me so deeply?

    What boundaries have been crossed?

Many turn to short-term fixes or STERBs (short-term energy-relieving behaviors) like anger to cope with grief. But these are merely band-aids on deeper emotional wounds. The key lies in processing anger constructively. This isn't about suppressing emotions but rather understanding them—identifying what needs protection or restoration within ourselves before we react impulsively.

    Key Takeaways:
-Anger should prompt introspection rather than projection onto others.
-Short-term coping mechanisms like STERBs provide temporary relief but do not address underlying emotional pain.
    - Constructive processing of anger involves self-protection and restoration efforts.
    - Emotional intelligence grows through understanding our reactions and setting healthy boundaries.

Establishing clear boundaries emerged as another critical theme. The absence of boundary-setting skills during childhood can lead to adult challenges such as unchecked anger. To navigate this complex terrain, the book "Boundaries" is recommended for those seeking guidance on creating and implementing boundaries.

Engagement with our emotions in real-time fosters balance and wellness. Tools like visualization and mindful breathing are practical strategies for dissipating anger without confrontation. We pave the way toward transformative life changes by embracing self-awareness and actively managing our emotions.

Join me in embracing self-awareness and mastering emotional management as pathways toward transforming our lives after loss.

    Episode 51. Jennifer in Oregon

Since this is the last episode of season 2 and I am putting this podcast in a hiatus (possibly permanently) I wanted to tell my mom's story. Today we will be talking about my mom, Bobbie Lee, and she passed away on August 24, 2020. My mom had Alzheimer's from a Traumatic Brain Injury and she'd been in a memory care since October 2018. She was a feisty lady and general good health, despite the Alzheimer's, when her memory care was shut down to visitors due to COVID.

My mom got COVID in August 2020 in an outbreak at her memory care. It was brought in by an employee, which was one of my worst fears. She was moved to a COVID nursing home where she died about 10 days later.

This podcast has been in honor of her memory, the family members of every person I've interviewed and everyone who has died of COVID, complications, Long COVID, etc.

    Elena and Yvette in Texas

Episode 50. Elena and Yvette in Texas

In this episode, I will be talking with Yvette and Elena. They lost their mother, Aurora Poblano, to COVID on January 23, 2021. Their mother Aurora lived in Pasadena, Texas with Elena. Yvette reached out to me over a year ago, but they've waited to talk about their mom until they could do it together.

One important thing to know is that their mom was diagnosed with Cerebellar Degeneration when she was 35 years old. It is a genetic disorder that is inherited and if I remember correctly, at least three of her children also have this disease. I've linked to some information about this in the show notes.

Elena and Yvette's mom had a special relationship with each one of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elena wanted me to add that her daughter Yadira and her son Javier would take turns taking their grandma to JC Penney which as her favorite store to shop, and then they would go and have breakfast at I-Hop. This was one of her favorite outings.

Yvette volunteers with the Yellow Heart Memorial and she is the founder of the San Bernadino installation of the Yellow Heart Memorial.

Elena is a volunteer for the Wall of COVID and Rose River memorial installation held in February of this year in Houston and they both have submitted their mom's name to the the Rami's Heart COVID 19 memorial and the Willow trees memorial.

    Episode 49. Angee in Missouri

In this episode, I will be talking with Angee in Missouri. Angee lost her mom, Gloria, to Covid on February 17, 2021. Angee not only feels the grief of losing her mom, but she also deeply feels the guilt of knowing that she brought the virus home to her mom. We talk a lot about grief and guilt and healing in this episode.

Angee mentions the Yellow Heart Memorial and how connecting with others has helped her. We also talk briefly about the book, Option B, by Sheryl Sandberg. Finally, there is a bit of an up and down audio sound when Angee is speaking sometimes. I've done my best to try to edit it to be more even.

    Brian in Illinois

    Brian in Illinois

    Episode 48. Brian in Illinois

I recorded this episode with Brian in Illinois in April 2022 and it was originally supposed to be episode 28. But Brian didn't send me any photos of his mom or him and I put this show on hold. With this podcast headed into a hiatus (more on that below), I decided to air this show and I went through Brian's YouTube channel and pulled some still images from his videos and he did send me some beautiful photos a couple of weeks ago.

Brian lost his mom in June of 2021 to complications from COVID. She'd had a number of serious medical emergencies in the last ten years and when she got COVID in February of 2021, though she recovered and came home in April, the overall damage was done and she just didn't get better.  Brian has autism and PTSD and he and his mother lived together for many, many years. They were literally each other's support system. When they got COVID, they both got incredibly ill very quickly and they could not help each other. Brian and his mom were alone for three days before he called 911. Brian also has Long COVID and we spend part of this interview talking about his symptoms and his long term health challenges.

Now about the hiatus. My work has picked up a lot and I've found I have less time to work on podcast episodes and everything that goes into producing them. For that reason, I have decided to end season 2 sometime in June and I'm not currently recording any stories. If my work stays this busy, I don't know if there will be a season 3, but for right now, I'll say that I'd like to do a limited season 3 later in the fall. I appreciate everyone who has been a part of this show, who's followed the podcast online on social media and who's listened. It means so much to me and it's been a huge part of my own personal grief and healing journey.

Quandell Wright | Where Are They Now?

Quandell's first episode was Ep. 28 | The Scars of Abuse, Poverty, and Shame, recorded in October 2020 and went live on January 5th, 2021.

Listening to Quandell's first episode is recommended to appreciate where Quandell was and how far he's come in his life.

He asks one question in this episode: "How do you grieve?" It's a question we all would benefit from reflecting upon and recognizing where we may need additional support or accountability for moving forward.

Personal development and life transformation is a marathon, not a sprint. In this first "Where Are They Now" episode, Quandell shares how his life has changed in the two and a half years since we first spoke.

In the words of Quandell: "You never know if the best is yet to come. What if you looked at life this way?"

    Just breathe...

Creating Your Own Peace: Why Closure Isn't the Key to Moving On

In this episode, host Liene talks about closure and the misconceptions surrounding it. She explores why we believe we need closure to move on and why that's not necessarily true. Liene discusses the importance of understanding that closure doesn't always bring peace and that it's okay not to have all the answers. She offers guidance on how to create your own peace by choosing to be okay with not knowing, and how to move forward with your life while still honoring your grief. Ultimately, she reminds listeners that grief is a part of life and that it's okay to allow it to be a part of our emotional spectrum.

How to Reach a Place Where Grief is Not Dominant in Your Life Anymore

How to Reach a Place Where Grief is Not Dominant in Your Life Anymore

In this podcast episode, Liene addresses the question of how grieving can eventually stop. She explains that while grief never completely goes away, it eventually becomes less dominant in our lives. In the early stages of grief, our brains have to update our mental maps to match our new reality, which takes time and experiences.

Liene also shares her personal experience, saying that while she still experiences grief waves, she almost misses the early grief and encourages listeners to pay attention to and experience their own grief journey.

Finding the Words... with Colin Campbell

Finding the Words... with Colin Campbell

Join me this week as I speak with Colin, a remarkable individual who has shown incredible resilience in the face of unimaginable loss. Despite the heart-wrenching experience of losing his two teenage children, Colin remains unwavering in his belief that there is still a life worth living after such tragedy.

As he shares his story, you'll discover that this life is different from the one you might have envisioned, but it is no less meaningful. With acceptance comes the growth of a bigger heart and strength that is born of the deepest sorrow.

Don't miss this inspiring conversation with Colin, a true testament to the power of the human spirit.

Colin Campbell is a writer and director for theatre and film. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Seraglio, a short film he wrote and directed with his lovely and talented wife, Gail Lerner. He has taught Theater and/or Filmmaking at Chapman University, Loyola Marymount University, Cal Poly Pomona University, and to incarcerated youth through The Unusual Suspects. His one-person show titled "Grief: A One Man Shit Show " premiered at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, where it won a Best of Broadwater Award. He lives in Los Angeles and sometimes Joshua Tree.
