EPISODE 24 / JORDAN CHENEVIER CMO & GROWTH HACKER

EPISODE 24 / JORDAN CHENEVIER CMO & GROWTH HACKER

    Allez hissez l’étendard, on part à l’abordage !

    59. What on Earth is growth hacking?

    59. What on Earth is growth hacking?

Why do some products go viral and others die a quiet death? The answer lies in growth hacking.

Growth hacking is a type of marketing that combines working on the product, which is an inside job, and working on promotion, which is an outside job. It is a new discipline born with the tech sector, and growing in popularity today.

    Learning notes from this episode:

    • The Dropbox growth hacking case study is still seen as the Holy Grail in the sector. The team created a double referral program to grow 3900% in just 15 months.
    • A growth hacking effort is always done by a multi-disciplinary team, and will often involve a product manager, a designer, a community manager, engineers, someone with a marketing or PR background, and maybe a data scientist.

    • Traditional marketing is outside facing: billboards, TV ads and articles in the press.  Growth hacking is different because it looks at the inside of the product, and adjusts it to grow users and revenue.

    • PR and growth hacking spur each other on: if something is going viral, journalists want to write about it. They write about it, which makes it go even more viral.
    • Products very rarely go viral by themselves. Viral growth is almost always the result of investment and experimentation by the growth hacking team.

    26. How to Get Into Product Management and Growth Hacking For Non-Techies

    26. How to Get Into Product Management and Growth Hacking For Non-Techies

    Learning notes from this episode:

    • To get into product management, you need to build a product. I doesn’t have to be a full mobile app. You can start with something very simple, like a blog or a newsletter.
    • Growth hacking is a system of experimentation and incremental improvements to grow a specific metric, e.g. revenue per user or time in app.
    • Good product managers and growth hackers both have a laser focus on a key metric and structure their work to achieve it. The key metric changes as the product evolves from early stage to mature.

#52: Former Head of Growth @ Amazon, Tye DeGrange, on Growth-As-A-Service and How To Scale (Growth Within Growth) (Part 2)

[Want an easy $50? if you leave a WRITTEN review on Apple Podcasts, you're entered into a $50 Amazon gift card raffle which we'll announce the winner of every other Thursday.]

Tye DeGrange (@tdegrange) is the CEO and Principal at Round Barn Labs, a growth-as-a-service agency that provides paid marketing and conversion rate optimization services for some of the world's greatest brands, including eBay, Porsche, and ModCloth and startups backed by Andreesson Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins, and Google Ventures.

Prior to Round Barn Labs, Tye was a Head of Growth at Amazon, Harland Clarke (customer engagement for financial services), and Quotient Technology (acquired by coupons.com) where he scaled customer bases, lowered CAC by launching untapped marketing channels, and consistently finding and solving sticking points in the "customer journey".

Tye also is an active member of the Reforge growth community, a San Francisco-based growth focused learning series led by world-renowned growth practitioners like Andrew Chen (Uber, Partner at Andreesson Horowitz) and Brian Balfour (HubSpot).

Tye holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from University of California, Santa Barbara.

This episode was very introspective. Tye himself is a humble, thoughtful, and excellent marketer with a wealth of knowledge in digital marketing. He's incredibly good at what he does (customer acquisition), and thus an inspiration for someone like myself.

In this episode, we talk about growth marketing as a concept, the duopoly of Google and Facebook as behemoth ad marketing sources, and the inception & growth of Round Barn Labs. If you're looking to reach your growth goals more efficiently, give them a peek here.

This episode is particularly valuable for 1) anyone looking for a foundational understanding of paid acquisition or the evolution of digital marketing over the past 15 years, or 2) anyone who has considered starting a marketing agency or consultancy and wants some 1st hand commentary from someone doing it well.

Jon Friesch (@jonfriesch) is a successful marketer, blogger, author, storyteller, and diehard Wisconsinite who is a master brand builder and creative.

Prior to growing several reputable Northwest brands, he worked in the newspaper industry (Capital Newspapers, Madison.com) as Head of Marketing, growing media revenue from $0 to $10 million as the Internet started to take shape from 1997-2008.

After working in newspapers, he shifted into internet marketing and established the GameHouse, Corbis, and Responsys (acquired by Oracle) brands through engaging customer retention marketing, creative solutions, and killer copy.

Recent roles placed his as the VP of marketing for Atavus, the professional rugby brand, and Assurance, an insurance tech company acquired by Prudential for $2.5B, and Client Director at The Marketing Practice (an elite B2B marketing agency. Check them out here).

Jon Friesch studied Political Science and advertising at the University of Wisconsin.

This conversation was a blast! Jon has become a recent mentor and life-long friend to me. We tapped into his "marketing thesis", bringing a dying and slow moving medium, newspapers, to the cutting edge of the Internet, the importance of irreverent brand building before direct marketing, and so much more in this colorful conversation.

This episode is particularly valuable for founders who wants to get an understanding of the importance of brand marketing and storytelling.
