    12 - Je t'aime toujours, mon amour

    12 - Je t'aime toujours, mon amour

"This is  a celebration of the two of us making music together...for over 35 years".
    —Andy Maize

"I'm very grateful that people will come and see us and that we've made a connection in the lives of an audience - what a gift that is".
    —Josh Finlayson

Un peu française, un peu optimiste, the final track on Bide Your Time is a joyous Django Reinhart-meets-Mills Brothers number - the perfect chanson to send us off into the night with a smile in our hearts and a spring in our step. For this track, audio engineer & multi-instrumentalist Tim Vesely (Rheostatics, Violet Archers) joined the fold, playing upright bass and singing harmonies.

This is a celebratory finale that finds Skydiggers paying tribute to the the past, being grateful for the present, and anticipating all the music to come.

To cap it all off, you'll be treated to two live-off-the-floor acoustic recordings: From the new album, you'll hear "Je t'aime toujours, mon amour" (Bide Your Time, 2023 ), followed by "Nothing Lasts Forever" (Warmth of the Sun, 2017). Both tracks are recorded by Tim Vesely at the Woodshed Studio in Toronto, Ontario.

    11 - Whatever The Cost

    11 - Whatever The Cost

"... it's about the cult of celebrity that we find ourselves in...people who are famous for being famous... one of those people was elected President of the United States." — Andy Maize

"Whatever the Cost"—the 5th track on Bide Your Time—reveals a perspective partially ripped from the headlines, but also gleaned from a more panoramic look at society and fame.

From stream of consciousness to the Santa Claus Parade, this episode finds Andy and Josh once again unveiling priceless memories and valuable lessons learned from a life spent on stage and in the studio. As always, the importance of friends, family, and a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour are essential ingredients in a rich career that has allowed them to continue making music that stays true to who they are.

You'll also be treated to acoustic live-off-the-floor versions of two songs: From the new album "Whatever The Cost" (Bide Your Time, 2023 ), and "It's a Pity" (Road Radio, 1995). Both tracks are recorded by Tim Vesely at the Woodshed Studio in Toronto, Ontario.

    Shaun Jacobs-A Songwriter's Journey

    Shaun Jacobs-A Songwriter's Journey

This week musical guest Shaun Jacobs, the award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer from South Africa takes us through his songwriter's journey.

Shaun has received recognition for his versatile sound and critical acclaim for his chart-topping hits, including a SAMA® (South African Music Award) for Best Adult Contemporary Album for Love Can,  which you’ll be able to enjoy in this episode, as well as nominations for Best Producer and Best Engineer.

Since his move to the United States Shaun has worked with top songwriters in both LA and Nashville, like "Youngr” that was co-written with Brazilian DJ Bruno Martini and produced by Timbaland with more than 16M streams on Spotify.

Love Can held the #1 spot on the local iTunes chart for 12 weeks consecutively and came in as the 14th most played song in all of Africa against all international music on Simfy for 2013. And that’s not all, Shaun’s music has been featured in campaigns for BMW, Ralph Lauren and Bitmoji, including his single, “Look At Me Now”.

In this interview we talked about the role in society that musicians have of expressing with songs people’s feelings that they don't necessarily know how to get out. He also shared useful advice for new artists out there, the importance of expressing without fear their pure own sounds and not being influenced by trying to fit somewhere. We also talked in depth about how to constructively deal with rejection, competition and self-demand in the entertainment industry, among many other things!

You can find him on social media as @imshaunjacobs.

Watch his music video “Say You Will Remember Me” https://youtu.be/kwanNreW78I?si=_DTGF-4YPOYprnpW which we mention in the interview, and also this concert at the Coca Cola Dome in South Africa https://youtu.be/F8FTbeMGTiE?si=tUpWDM95TAd9s7L3

Here is another one of his music hits “Hurt” https://youtu.be/V_JkQWWqi08?si=eDbIkpFu3UcP1w8B

10 - Keep It To Myself

10 - Keep It To Myself

"When you release [a song] it's no longer yours, so you put it out into the world, and it finds its own path..." —Andy Maize

Private thoughts, public work: a contrast that many artists and performers encounter, and Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson are no exception. Their ability to step back from their own personal challenges and present an all-embracing picture of the world may be one of their superpowers, but ...they're only human. In "Keep It To Myself", the raw emotions felt after a loss are held close to the chest.

In this episode, Josh and Andy talk about the balance of personal and private. They also touch on of the topics of grief, comfort, social media, road trips, soundtracks, and the essential role played by Josh's rhythm guitar.

You'll also hear Andy and Josh perform two songs: The brand new "Keep It To Myself" (Bide Your Time, 2023 ) and "Northern Shore" (Northern Shore Deluxe, 2012). Both tracks are recorded by Tim Vesely, live-off-the-floor at the Woodshed Studio in Toronto, Ontario.

Anvil - Pedal to the Metal

Anvil - Pedal to the Metal

Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner aka "The Hungo Hammer" have been bandmates and rock 'n roll co-conspirators since the 1970s. Their band Anvil had massive success in the 1980s after the release of their now-classic album, "Metal is Metal".  Bands such as Anthrax, Slayer, and Metallica all credit Anvil with having influenced their sound.

Due to forces beyond their control, Anvil's success didn't stick, and they toiled in obscurity for several years... until 2009, when an old friend and roadie—Sacha Gervasi—approached them about making a documentary about the band. Anvil: The Story of Anvil  took the world by storm with its gritty but touching story of true friendship, commitment, and artistic integrity. The rock doc re-ignited fans around the world.  Since then, the band has been living their long-held dream of touring full-time, and making a living as musicians.

Now, 13 years after its initial release, the re-mastered Anvil: The Story of Anvil, is being re-released to theatres, to the delight of fans both new and old. In this interview, Jane talks to drummer Robb Reiner and director Sacha Gervasi about the buzz around the film's release, the band's imminent European tour, and what success means. Plus, Jane suggests a name for the next Anvil album.

Broadway at the Beach with Steve Steiner

Broadway at the Beach with Steve Steiner

Welcome to episode 32 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Steve Steiner, Producing Artistic Director for the Surflight Theatre.

The same day this podcast goes LIVE, the Surflight Theatre is also being featured on Good Morning America.

Steve was born in Chicago, but left at a young age and grew up in St. Louis. He actually thought he would wind up in the family business, which was a paint manufacturing company. He did work for the paint manufacturing company for a short time in college. However, during his college years Six Flags Park was hiring and he auditioned. That became a life changer for Steve as he never truly has stopped performing.

His career either on the stage performing or being behind the stage making the magic happen has spanned now over 50 years. Recently, Steve was Daddy Warbucks in Surflight Theatre's production of 'Annie'.

Following several years as a professional musician, playing 11 instruments at the height of his career,  Steve headed to NY at age 30 to give Broadway a try. Over the next 16 years he was working non-stop, including making it to Broadway in shows like Anything Goes, The Buddy Holly Story, and State Fair.

Steve made his way from on the stage to making the magic happen on the stage at the Surflight Theatre. Last summer due to COVID and a storm, there were many challenges to overcome in order to keep the Surflight Theatre running. However, due to the resiliency of Steve, his team, and some incredible volunteers performers were able to take the stage and audiences were able to escape through the stories they told under a big top tent.

At the Surflight Theatre you not only experience Broadway quality shows, but also shows specifically made for children, comedy and musical acts. Listen in to hear about the incredible apprenticeship program that Surflight has created for kids to learn about all the aspects of bringing shows to life.

The Surflight Theatre is also connected to the Showplace Ice Cream Parlour. Showplace is an icon in Beach Haven, NJ. The ice cream sundaes are named after Broadway shows or song titles. The patrons become part of the act, and then the waitresses and waiters, also known at Showplace as waitri, put on an amazing show for the audience as they indulge in their decadent ice cream masterpieces.

Listen in to hear more about Steve’s journey and his answer to, 'if I knew then what I know now'.

Please go to Surflight Theatre for information on their current performance line-up.

The Serious Stylings of Jazz Guitarist Andy Bianco

The Serious Stylings of Jazz Guitarist Andy Bianco

It is fitting that I am posting this episode of Talking to Strangers late at night, as that's when I met today's guest, jazz guitarist Andy Bianco. We met at Korzo, a Park Slope restaurant and bar, during one of the late great Konceptions Music Series shows put on by pianist James Carney and his wife Heidi Bayer. He wasn't playing that night, but I would hear him on a number of subsequent occasions, both in bars and in my house, where he began to teach my son.

As much as I try, with this podcast and otherwise, it is hard to exactly explain the feeling of familiarity that comes over you when you meet a stranger who is sure to be in your life in some way. There was something about his voice, and the very serious way in which he placed his words, the care with which he spoke, that made me take Andy's number and follow up with him to see if he gave lessons. Even though he was funny, and made me laugh, I could also see that he took great pride in the knowledge he had about music and the other topics that got raised that night and on subsequent evenings as he came and went from my house, before and after the lessons he gave. Knowledge, and the enthusiasm for it, is a great asset in life, and certainly a phenomenal asset for a musician and teacher. Music moves people. It is a valuable thing, and Andy clearly values it, and loves to share it, in so many ways. Reach out to him for lessons! bianco.andy05@gmail.com

It was so fun to do this podcast with Andy, to really sit down and listen to how he became interested in guitar, to jazz in particular. I had given a bit to the GoFundMe he started for a music scholarship in his late father's name, but hadn't heard as much about his father's life as a musician and how it had inspired Andy. You can learn more about it and donate at http://www.gofundme.com/f/phillip-bianco-music-scholarship. Check out his website  http://artistecard.com/andybianco and his new album: https://ffm.to/kpdgkop

I am always blown away by the dedication great musicians have to their craft, and there is almost no better example of that dedication than now, during a time when so much about musicians' lives have come to a grinding halt. Watching Andy take on new projects, new students, new efforts to keep focused on sharing the great mysteries of music is heart-warming and hopeful: music will never die, nor will musicians, whose legacy will live on and on and on through their music, and the people who have the great good fortune to listen to them play.
