    Against the Assault of Laughter

    Against the Assault of Laughter

    Knock, knock!

Educators use humor as a vital tool for building community in classrooms, helping students retain information, and creating a positive learning environment. All that aside, who doesn't enjoy a good laugh? There's something of a growing interest in scholarship surrounding the use of humor in classrooms, and this week your hosts are taking a look at what makes us laugh. What kinds of humor might best serve students of all backgrounds? How do you use humor to reach students who might otherwise be out of touch? How comfortable are you as an educator with expressing your sarcastic side? We're tackling all of these questions on 16:1.

    Thanks for listening!

Behind The Dad Mask | Brian Manor on Anxiety, Mental Illness, Fatherhood

Behind The Dad Mask | Brian Manor on Anxiety, Mental Illness, Fatherhood

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five adults in the U.S. lives with a mental illness. If anything, that statistic tells us that those who are struggling are not alone in their struggle. Still, reaching out for help can sometimes feel insurmountable. In this episode, guest Brian Manor, a dad to two, shares his personal story and talks openly about his challenges with clinical depression, social anxiety disorder, and seasonal affective disorder. Stick around to the end for another round of the infamous recurring segment, Confessions

Episode 41 opens with hosts Adam and Marc briefly recounting their experiences getting their first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, coincidentally scheduled on the same day. The guys transition to a discussion of mental illness; specifically the ways in which society addresses mental health, and how the conversation has shifted over the past 30 years. The guys welcome Brian Manor to the conversation. Brian is a husband and a father of two. He lives in Wisconsin, works for a blood donation organization, and writes for his fatherhood-themed Fatterhood: A Humorous New Dad's Blog. Brian shares openly, (both in his blog and during our conversation), about his history with mental illness and how it has affected his life, his job, and his role as a father. The conversation covers many topics including:

    •  Why Brian is not ashamed of his mental health
    •  The difficulty in diagnosing mental health conditions in children
    •  Overlapping symptoms of clinical depression and anxiety disorders
    •  The importance of SEEKING HELP!
    •  The importance of checking on your friends if you’re concerned about them
    •  The rise of discussing mental illness publicly and without shame
    •  How educating his support system is helpful
    •  How finding the right provider led to significant improvement
    •  Being aware of potential signs in your children
    •  Shop around for the right provider if you are able to
    •  "It's not your fault, but it's your responsibility."

The episode culminates with  arguably one of the strongest Confessions sessions to date.

On a personal note from Adam and Marc, in each episode, we invite our listeners to reach out to us by e-mail. If you can relate to Brian's experience or you connect with this episode for any reason, you are more than welcome to reach out to us. While we are not experts on mental illness, fatherhood, or much of anything, really—we are good listeners. And we are here for you.

We've included links below that pertain to our conversation with Brian, as well as some additional resources that we'd encourage you to explore. But as a reminder, there is no shame in seeking help. And, despite how it may feel, you are NOT alone. We love you and appreciate you!

    4. Tämäkö on hauskaa, Hannah Gadsby?
Kuka saa määritellä, mitä stand-up on?

Geek Girl Reviews Hannah Gadsby's Nanette - Stand-Up Comedy that hits DEEP

Geek Girl Reviews Hannah Gadsby's Nanette - Stand-Up Comedy that hits DEEP

Whew. This week on Geek Girl Reviews, we checked out Hannah Gadsby's stand-up comedy Nanette on Netflix. Whaaaat an INCREDIBLE and freaking powerful stand-up. It's an emotional rollercoaster and honestly, towards the end the tears of laughter definitely turned to tears of compassion.

It feels wrong to call this a stand-up comedy.. because, okay, it starts out being pretty funny, but by the end of these 69 minutes, no one was laughing. Hannah gets deep and bares her soul and trauma and true experiences.

And it's heartbreaking. It's beautiful. It's a plea for us all to be better fucking human beings.

Hannah Gadsby is a stand-up comedian from Tasmania who rose to fame seemingly overnight when Nanette released on Netflix. But in reality, Hannah's been hard at work on the comedy scene for over a decade, playing to sold out shows across the globe.

Outside the laughs about gender, sexuality, being a lesbian, the patriarchy, and misogyny, Hannah hits on some real serious issues. Homophobia, abuse, violence, shame, despair... Nanette cuts deep and true.

As a society, we need to do better, to be better, to act better. We have it in us! It's just so fucking hard to see it right now.

The world is so full of hatred, not just towards queer people, but towards anyone (and sometimes everyone) who's different from that person's norm. Let us tell you - we're better than this and you are, too!

Diversity is strength. Diversity builds society. Celebrate and embrace all the different types of people that exist in this world!

Hannah Gadsby is amazing. Nanette is amazing. It's a MUST WATCH for every single person in the world. If you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing and go check it out right meow! Trigger warning though for sure. And probably bring tissues.

Myf wakes Zan up at a ridiculous hour in Germany, where she’s been busy trying to get into all the coolest clubs, before she begins her judging duties for the ANCHOR – Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award. We celebrate Hannah Gadsby’s Emmy win while questioning how Beyonce missed out on six awards. As well, suggested new rules for dealing with trolls have us thinking about the best way to deal with nastiness online. And of course we do what everyone’s doing and throw our faces into Imagenet Roulette, with the appropriately inappropriate response.

    Netflix's Nanette

This week, we're joined by Brian Heater to review Nanette, a comedy special from Hannah Gadsby that challenges the format of your standard comedy special — while still being pretty funny itself. We also discuss this year's Emmy nominations, which saw Netflix overtake HBO with the nominations.

    #32: It’s Tearjerker Time!

Who needs a good cry? Well, we’ve got you covered this week as we discuss two works bristling with poignant and powerful emotion. First up is the new documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? about the life and work of Fred Rogers, who brought a philosophy of radical kindness and love to the often crass and materialistic world of children’s television. Then, we react to Hannah Gadsby’s new Netflix special Nanette, which challenges the established conventions of the comedy special as Gadsby draws on her life experiences as a woman who doesn’t conform to rigid social expectations around gender to explain why she needs to quit comedy.

We also touch on the campaign to remake The Last Jedi (lol), which show is better, Sherlock or Elementary, and lots more.
