015: A Butt of Malmsey: Happy Thanksgiving from Brooke McEldowney!

015: A Butt of Malmsey: Happy Thanksgiving from Brooke McEldowney!
To celebrate Thanksgiving, we check out a handful of strips that ran on Thanksgivings in the past. Naturally, Brooke McEldowney wants NOTHING to do with such a common holiday. So we have to find our own way to give thanks for Juliette burning her old Daisy Dukes, Rita Hayworth throwing hot dogs at virgins, Edda getting furious at a butt of Malmsey, Amos & Edda ogling a mystery woman together, and a character we've never seen before attempting to jump off a diving board while giving a piggy-back ride to another character we've never seen before. But the real thing to give thanks for might be our conversation about vampires and how the rules of vampires make Brooke (Dillman) absolutely furious. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: Juliette burns her Daisy Dukes, Rita Hayworth throws some hot dogs around, and Edda hears "butt" everywhere are here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1594627712999559168?s=20&t=lGc2HR0TTMcJ3sl_Acq0wQ). The Carol Burnett Show and Mayberry Memories featuring Vicki Lawrence and Karen Knotts

Vicki Lawrence lit up TV screens for eleven years on The Carol Burnett Show and for an additional six years in her own spin-off sit-com, Mama’s Family. Mama has since become a cultural icon so take a seat and roll down your nylons. She’s still got plenty to say in "Vicki and Mama: A Two Woman Show."

Vicki’s one hit wonder, “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia shot to number one and inspired a movie. But can Vicki explain the plot? The answer lies inside this episode which also features Karen Knotts whose one woman show pays tribute to her fabulous father, Don Knotts.

Harvey Korman's Legacy Lives on Through His Son

The Emmy and Golden Globe winner Harvey Korman was a staple on the Carol Burnett Show making America laugh in the 1960s and 1970s. During that time he was also raising a family, including his son, Christopher, who had a learning disability and speech impediment. In this episode, you will learn how Harvey Korman's legacy lives on through his son and their contributions to the special education community. Special Educators will hear about techniques Chris learned from his dad and the theater that helped him overcome his learning and speech challenges.

After listening to the podcast, be sure to purchase a copy of Chris's book entitled, OMG! It's Harvey Korman's Son, which is a love letter to Harvey Korman's fans.

    Herbie Goes Bananas

This week the society rounds third and heads home to finish our trip through the gauntlet of the four pre-Lohan Herbie movies with a doozie, Herbie Goes Bananas, the 1980 international adventure directed by Vincent McEveety and starring Stephen W. Burns, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, and Joaquin Garay III.  Join us as we set sail aboard the Sun Princess and enjoy life at sea with a scenic trip to Mexico, Panama, and who knows where else.  Brace yourself - there are pickpockets, archeological opportunists, flirtatious cruisers, menacing bulls, maniacal naval figures, and, of course, bananas ahead.  We can only say you've been warned.  There. Will. Be. Bananza.
