60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Do You Strive For Excellence or Perfection?

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Do You Strive For Excellence or Perfection?

Hello to you listening in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Podcast episode number 1,000 aired on Monday 1st January 2024 New Years’s Day. That’s a lot of episodes!

What do I talk about? I talk about things that interest me, which is the magic of traditional storytelling, navigating our way in life, changing toxic narratives, personal experiences that have shape-shifted over time into wisdom, and the power of women’s voices.

I’ve been spending less time struggling to create my work because I’m no longer striving for perfection. I want to say what I mean, mean what I say, and use only a minute or two to get my point across. Is it perfection? Not so much. Is it excellence? Perhaps every now and again.

What changed me? This line by the American-British author, Henry James, considered to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. “Excellence does not require perfection.” [Henry James]

Question: What do you strive for?

You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!

    The Turn of the Screw

    The Turn of the Screw
Wir besprechen heute die Novelle "The Turn of the Screw" von Henry James. Nun, das Buch hat es uns nicht wirklich leicht gemacht, aber hört am besten selbst.

Stay Dirty. Stay Moderate: The White Lotus and American Delusion

Stay Dirty. Stay Moderate: The White Lotus and American Delusion

Politics is always downwind of culture. And for 2022's final installment of Stay Dirty, Stay Moderate, Adam weaves the parallels between Henry James's "The Portrait of a Lady" and the HBO critically-acclaimed series "The White Lotus" with the delusion of American culture.

Jazz Bastard Podcast 197 - Subtle Is As Subtle Does

Jazz Bastard Podcast 197 - Subtle Is As Subtle Does

Ya want big bands?  We got big bands.  Sometimes we got one in each speaker.  In this exploration of the more extroverted side of jazz, the boys explore works by a blazing trumpet player (and world-class womanizer), a so-so clarinetist with a heart of gold, two piano-playing band leaders who both worship Duke Ellington, and two (but it sounds like thirty) major-league skin-pounders.  Much musing on the glory days of fifteen musicians criss-crossing the nation via bus results, and there's just time left to discuss Wilco, Carl Wilson and . . . Celine Dion?   Buddy Rich and Max Roach – RICH VS. ROACH; Duke Ellington and Count Basie – FIRST TIME! THE COUNT MEETS THE DUKE; Woody Herman – COMPLETE COLUMBIA RECORDINGS DISC 7; Harry James – TRUMPET BLUES – THE BEST OF HARRY JAMES.

Susan K. Harris on Mark Twain

Susan K. Harris on Mark Twain

In Green Hills of Africa, the 1935 account of his safari, Hemingway made his most enduring statement of literary criticism. He wrote that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. [. . .]  There was nothing before.  There has been nothing as good since."

What does that mean? Is he right? Was there a strategy behind what seems to be a high compliment?

One True Podcast welcomes Susan K. Harris to tackle this iconic quote and to gain a better sense of Hemingway's relationship to Twain and how they compare as craftsmen. En route, we take up other significant questions, like how to make sense of the final part of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn--which Hemingway called "cheating"--and how to better understand the very notion of influence between artists.

'Be one upon whom nothing is lost.'

Where do ideas come from? A head full of all kinds of random stuff. You have to feed your soul, as Chalice puts it, and then you'll make interesting connections and come up with new thoughts - which for anyone in creative marketing is vital. In this episode, we talk about how a cat up a tree sparked an award winning campaign, and why a boxing match might be as useful as a visit to an art gallery.
