E102: Live From My Drum Room With Dave Weckl! 10-19-22

Clarification: At the time of this show, Dave Weckl was my 100th episode. However, after releasing episodes from my archives, this was actually Episode 102.

For the 100th episode of "Live From My Drum Room," John's guest is the legendary Dave Weckl! In this episode, Dave talks about touring and his latest projects, his early drumming influences with great insights into Buddy Rich, his online drum school, his philosophy for achieving his live drum sound, his recording studio, engineering and much, much more! A must watch episode!

Ep. 128: Degrees Of Separation... RUSH

Ep. 128: Degrees Of Separation... RUSH

This week is our 7th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we were touched by the spirit of radio! That’s right: RUSH! We had to dig deep to get songs from these 3 Canadian phenoms outside of the mighty RUSH. Known for their hectic schedule and amazing work ethic of record-tour-record-tour throughout their 40+ year career, we were able to cobble together some unique songs outside their main gigs. Hope ya dig!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their long careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Victor – “Start Today” from Victor (1996)
    2. I Mother Earth – “Good For Sule” from Blue Green Orange (1999)
    3. Jeff Berlin & Vox Humana – “Champion (Of The World)” from Champion (1985)
    4. Platinum Blonde – “Crying Over You” from Alien Shores (1985)
    5. The Big Dirty Band – “I Fought The Law” from Trailer Park Boys: The Movie Soundtrack (2006)
    6. Vertical Horizon – “Instamatic” from Echoes From The Underground (2013)
    7. Envy Of None – “Spy House” from Envy Of None (2022)

Jazz Bastard Podcast 241 - Give the Drummer Less

Jazz Bastard Podcast 241 - Give the Drummer Less

Drummers are the under-sung heroes of the jazz world.  At their best, they lift up and enhance whatever the so-called front-liners are up to while being ready to step up and say their piece when called upon.  But every now and then things get a bit . . . sticky.  This episode explores four recordings where to varying degrees the drummer goes a little wild and oddity results.  Charlie Parker - BIRD & DIZ; Dexter Gordon – ONE FLIGHT UP; Mostly Other People Do the Killing – DISASTERS VOLUME 1; Slide Hampton – MELLOW DY.

Jazz Bastard Podcast 197 - Subtle Is As Subtle Does

Jazz Bastard Podcast 197 - Subtle Is As Subtle Does

Ya want big bands?  We got big bands.  Sometimes we got one in each speaker.  In this exploration of the more extroverted side of jazz, the boys explore works by a blazing trumpet player (and world-class womanizer), a so-so clarinetist with a heart of gold, two piano-playing band leaders who both worship Duke Ellington, and two (but it sounds like thirty) major-league skin-pounders.  Much musing on the glory days of fifteen musicians criss-crossing the nation via bus results, and there's just time left to discuss Wilco, Carl Wilson and . . . Celine Dion?   Buddy Rich and Max Roach – RICH VS. ROACH; Duke Ellington and Count Basie – FIRST TIME! THE COUNT MEETS THE DUKE; Woody Herman – COMPLETE COLUMBIA RECORDINGS DISC 7; Harry James – TRUMPET BLUES – THE BEST OF HARRY JAMES.

    MCFC Episode 34 - Whiplash

The gang get musically abused this week, as they get deep inside Whiplash (2014) by Damien Chazelle. Before La La Land and First man, Chazelle write and directed this intense and tight drama about pushing yourself, and being pushed, to be the best, at all costs. Pete will be leading the show, as it was his pick on the wheel, this week.

Plenty of streaming picks, this week, so tune in to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon and watch what we're watching. Also stay tuned til the end for next week's mystery movie from the Wheel of Destiny.

Artie Shaw - A Birthday Salute Part 2

Artie Shaw - A Birthday Salute Part 2
This week on Part Two of our birthday salute to Artie Shaw, we pick up with his band from the mid 1940's. On the tribute I tried to pick out many of his hits. These were also chosen for Artie himself for a 5 disc set called "Self Portrait". May 23rd, 1910 is the birthday of the late Artie Shaw and I wanted to present those great sides of his as we learn about his career. These are the original recordings by Artie and his band. I hope you enjoy the music by one of the jazz worlds greatest clarinetists and bandleaders. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Artie Shaw - A Birthday Salute Part 1
When I was in the high school band, I played the clarinet. I first discovered the great music of Benny Goodman then a year or two later I discovered Artie Shaw. Artie's band was different than Benny's. I am not going to choose sides because I like them both.
