Overcoming The Recruitment and Retention Challenge w/ Teresa Kiyawasew Kiy HR Services

Overcoming The Recruitment and Retention Challenge w/ Teresa Kiyawasew Kiy HR Services

    Friends in the Industry -

Today, I’m super excited to bring back to the podcast my friend Teresa Kiyawasew, owner of Kiy HR Services, and is also known as the HR Wizard!

During our conversation, Teresa and I dive into what are some key components of hiring correctly and guides us through the first part of an employee’s life cycle, known as Attraction. Here, we dive into key components you need to implement when considering hiring, actually hiring, and onboarding.

Teresa shares some must need advice for organizations to implement right away that are currently, or about to, hire, that will help them overcome some of the challenges that come with recruitment and retention!

During our conversation, Teresa mentioned two things that were huge takeaways for me.

First, when you mentioned “do you even need the position” and how you work with clients on completing a job analysis ahead of time – so much value for both the employee and the employer here to be confident in the needs of the role which helps make the right hire.

Second, when you mentioned being careful of the information you’re getting, and shared the story of the case law situation, super powerful and so true – we need to ensure we are complying with the correct laws!

I highly recommend checking out episode #88 on the Truck Focus Podcast, which is the original interview Teresa joined me on and you can learn more about her journey!

Let Me Ask You This... Have you considered all the steps that go into launching a new business?

All the various components are required to be pieced together in just the right way, that you can structure a service or product that is eventually purchased.

From there, you start to gain more trust within your industry, and more purchases are made. You get to a point where business is going so well, or things are just that busy, that you decide you need to hire someone to help you out. Now, you’re an expert in your business, without a doubt.

But have you hired an employee before? Are you aware of all that it takes to properly hire an employee, but also what goes into retaining such employees so they don’t quit after the first 2 or 3 weeks?

I highly recommend taking a look at Teresa's incredible training, the Complete HR Blueprint as she does an excellent job teaching essential information that you need to know in order to successfully implement, and manage, your human resources in your business.

As I have mentioned time and time again, my mission on the Truck Focus Podcast is to introduce industry leaders just like Teresa, to you – the industry – to help create a pivotal impact!

Teresa, thank you so much for the value shared in today’s conversation.

Ep05 - Are Formal Performance Evaluations Necessary?

Ep05 - Are Formal Performance Evaluations Necessary?
Performance management is often seen as a bureaucratic, administrative task. It takes a lot of time and hard work to put the system in place, but when done correctly, it can bring so much value. In this episode, I talk with Gabriel Dhahan about the origin of performance evaluations, common misconceptions, and pitfalls. We will dig into how well-crafted job descriptions and one-on-one sessions are some of the most powerful tools a small business can have and how using these tools can shift the odds in your favour on your way to achieving your goals.

Ep03 - Is Diversity Important At Work?

Ep03 - Is Diversity Important At Work?
There is so much talk about diversity and inclusion nowadays. Can I put out an ad asking for diverse people? Aren’t the best hires from personal referrals? Am I not at risk of getting people who don't have the common values of my organization? Does diversity really matter? In this episode, I talk to Sylvia Apostolidis, founder of the Jasmar Group, who has spent the last 15 years researching the behavioral science around diversity and inclusion. We dig into two big questions, why diversity matters and what practical actions can we take to become more diverse and inclusive business owners.

    SHOW NOTES

    • Shawnee had spent most of her adult life in Vancouver before moving to Kelowna in 2005.
    • She got tired of the long commute, the extreme cost of decent housing in Vancouver that would allow her kids a grass yard to play in and enjoy the great outdoors. Because she loves to hike and bike, go to the beach and ski, Kelowna was the winner.
    • Fortuitously, she was working for a wine company and had to travel to Kelowna for work. Combined with several vacations here, the choice to move was easy.
    • Realized her passions are Communications, People and Business, and those informed her career choice to become a consultant.
    • Balancing work and family life in the most effective way: working long hours + volunteering at her boys' school.
    • Human Resources, Compensation, Employee Recruiting and Retention, Onboarding/Orientation, Compensation & Benefits, Training & Development, Performance Management, and Culture are the key components of her business.
    • Starting a brand new business in the midst of a recession in 2008: Mindset, persistence, and finding clients.
    • Community Futures offers some fantastic programs that can help with crafting a business plan, obtaining funding, and mentorship, all of which can be extremely difficult or impossible to obtain when dealing directly with a bank as a brand new business.
    • Expect only 20-30% of your hours to be billable in your first year as a consultant! If you do really well you *might* hit 50% in your second year.
    • When it comes to marketing, you should do what you excel at and not worry too much about marketing avenues that you either don't enjoy or are not cost effective for you.
    • Kelowna is a great and welcoming city for entrepreneurs and small business startups.
    • Shawnee and I assess the current state of the local economy: Indicators are very mixed, with some businesses really struggling to fill open positions with quality workers.
    • A new designation: Certified Management Consultant.
    • 2 book recommendations: The Captain Class: The Hidden Force that Creates the World's Greatest Teams by Sam Walker and Your Oxygen Mask First: 17 Habits to Help High Achievers Survive & Thrive in Leadership & Life by Kevin N. Lawrence.
