12 Days of Christmas Song’s Hidden Catholic Meaning (Special Podcast Highight)

Have you memorized all of the 12 Days of Christmas song? Did you know that these themes in the song had a deeper Catholic meaning? Prepare to get the song stuck in your head as you dive deep into some catechetical truths!

Timmerie unveils the song's potential role as a secret catechism tool during times of Catholic persecution in England (1558-1829). This joyous melody might have served as a covert means for Catholic children to learn and remember their faith.

Here's a breakdown of the hidden Catholic meanings in each verse:

    1. Partridge in a Pear Tree: Jesus Christ, the self-sacrificing savior.
    2. Two Turtle Doves: The Old and New Testaments, symbolizing the continuity and revelation of God’s word.
    3. Three French Hens: The theological virtues - Faith, Hope, and Charity.
    4. Four Calling Birds: The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
    5. Five Golden Rings: The Torah (first five books of the Bible.)
    6. Six Geese A-Laying: The six days of creation.
    7. Seven Swans A-Swimming: The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
    8. Eight Maids A-Milking: The Beatitudes
    9. Nine Ladies Dancing: The fruits of the Holy Spirit, condensed for memorability.
    10. Ten Lords A-Leaping: The Ten Commandments
    11. Eleven Pipers Piping: The eleven faithful Apostles (excluding Judas who betrayed the Lord.
    12. Twelve Drummers Drumming: The twelve articles of faith in the Apostles' Creed.

Timmerie challenges you to not just enjoy the melody, but to delve into the rich tapestry of faith these verses represent. Try to work on memorizing all of these important aspects of our faith! It's an invitation to rediscover the depth and joy of the Catholic Church, especially in times of trial. 🌟🎵🙏

Episode Thirty-Faith, Family, and Holiday Festivities with SInger/Songwriter Kerrie Roberts

Episode Thirty-Faith, Family, and Holiday Festivities with SInger/Songwriter Kerrie Roberts

We often talk about the natural world as being the first classroom, the first physician, and the first form of spiritual practice.

As we find ourselves in the Holiday Season, we decided to discuss the connections between faith, nature, and the human experience.

While we all may have different faith-based belief systems, we can all agree on certain parts of our human experience journey.

Nature has always been a central component of the human spiritual experience.

In most faith practices, the natural world is universally agreed upon as embodying divinity, sacredness, and spiritual power. Most religions and spiritual practices have expressed strong connections to the natural world and commitments to protect it.

Welcome to Episode Thirty of The Nature of Wellness Podcast.

On this episode, we sat down with Kerrie Roberts. Kerrie is a nationally acclaimed GMA Dove award nominee and Billboard charting writer/recording artist who has released music on both major and independent labels. Her music appears on numerous TV shows, movies/documentaries, podcasts, and numerous other projects.

Her most recent project is a newly released holiday album entitled Because It’s Christmas.

Kerrie consistently writes, produces, and releases music while serving as a worship leader. She is an avid gardener and a certified health and wellness coach with Wellcoaches. Kerrie holds an adjunct faculty position at a university in Florida but prides herself on the development of her two favorite students, her two daughters, whom she home-educates.

Join us as we talk to Kerrie about her journey with nature, the importance of finding personalized lifestyle changes for increased well-being, and what faith and the holiday season truly mean to her.

Kerrie discusses the power of letting go of pride and ego, how time in nature can be a strong point of connection within a community, how making nature-based memories with family can become generationally-given gifts, and how she embraces activities such as nature-based journaling as a teaching tool for herself and her family.

Kerrie wanted each of us to have a special gift from her. Check out her single “Merry in My Christmas is YOU,” from her new album, at the end of the episode.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! We wish you a time of peace, love, family, faith…and  NATURE.

Who was the Real St Nick? (Special Podcast Highlight)

Who was the Real St Nick? (Special Podcast Highlight)

🤔 Separating fact from fiction about St. Nicholas, Cale Clarke delves deep! Legend has it, St. Nick might have knocked out Arius, a notorious heretic who claimed Jesus wasn't God. This controversial figure nearly split the Church, twisting Scripture to back his claims. Such heresy triggered the Council of Nicaea, where bishops, some maimed from persecution, fiercely defended their faith.

🔍 Diving into St. Nick's life, we find he became a bishop in Myra (now Turkey) at a young age. Famous for his generosity, he's believed to have saved three young women from a dire fate by providing dowries - though this tale's truth is uncertain. What's sure? He suffered imprisonment and torture for his faith under Emperor Diocletian but never wavered.

👴 After his death in 343 AD, St. Nick's remains became a source of miracles. Italian sailors, fearing his tomb's desecration in Myra, relocated his remains to Bari, Italy. Miraculously, his tomb exudes a sweet-smelling liquid, believed by some to have healing powers.

🧐 But here's a twist! St. Nick was no jolly, portly Santa. Modern research shows he was slender, around 5'4", with a broken nose - possibly from torture. His remains reveal a life marked by hardship and faith.

🐺 Fun fact: St. Nick is the patron saint of a surprising mix, including wolves and brewers, alongside the more expected ones like children and sailors.

The Symphony of Lights was brought to Clinton, Iowa, in November 1996 by two non-profit organizations, the Clinton Jaycee Foundation and the Clinton Symphony Orchestra. These organizations founded the event as a fundraiser but quickly learned it was much more. The Symphony of Lights brought a sense of pride to the community that had been lacking for a long time. It awakened volunteerism in all ages. Since its inception, the number of volunteers has grown tremendously. It is estimated that the numbers involved reach around 400.

52: Christmas and holiday stress with teenagers and tweens.

52: Christmas and holiday stress with teenagers and tweens.

A holiday is when someone is free to do what they want, such as travel or relax. That's according to the Cambridge Dictionary.

The problem with teenagers, is that what they want to do for several weeks over summer - such as sleep or use their electronic devices all day - may not fit with what we think they should be doing.

Also, having them around, doing what they want, may not be very relaxing for others who're also on holiday, or trying to work.

So how do we survive the school holidays in a way that leaves us, and our relationships, unscathed?

Top tip: lower your expectations of yourself and them for at least the first two weeks, and avoid comparisons with other families.

49: Snapchat addiction; the app that's a fantastic way to connect, or a cynical exploitation of your teenager's time?

Snapchat has become a must-have for most teens, because it's now the way they stay in touch with their friends. The filters make it fun, they can see where their friends are on Snapmaps, and the instant photos give them a quick and easy contact point.

But one of our listeners has contacted us asking for help with it. She says her teen son was already struggling to control himself when it comes to screens so she's delayed allowing him to have Snapchat, but caved because all of his friends are using it.

Now, she says, he is always on a device and easily finds ways around the controls they have been trying to put in place; primarily to access Snapchat.

Our previous episode on Screens and Teens covers the ways in which you can tackle it. It's not the amount of screen time we should worry most about, it's what they are doing with their screens.

    • Remember you don't have to be on every app; pick the ones you find most fun and useful, and least toxic.
    • Disable screen notifications.
    • Decide in advance how much time you want to spend playing a game or browsing an app.
    • Find ways to create 'space' between the urge and action of scrolling/gaming.
    • Set a 'digital sunset' (a time when your phone goes in a drawer/on airplane mode) about an hour before you want to go to sleep.

Episode 116 - Christmas; Or the Good Fairy: A Harriet Beecher Stowe Christmas Story

Episode 116 - Christmas; Or the Good Fairy: A Harriet Beecher Stowe Christmas Story

Jennie and Dianne have made a tradition of sharing classic Christmas stories each year and have chosen an especially lovely to share as we say goodbye to 2022 and hello to the new year. This year the ladies pay a quick visit to the grave of Harriet Beecher Stowe whose novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" made her a household name prior to the American Civil War. She was a woman who stood up for her beliefs her entire life and worked to better the lives of those less fortunate. She was a wife, mother, abolitionist, suffragette, and writer. In addition to "Uncle Tom's Cabin", Harriet Beecher Stowe published more than 30 other books, articles and short stories; including several about Christmas, many with themes of helping others and being thankful for what one has. Dianne and Jennie are grateful for each and every listener this past year. They wish everyone a safe and happy 2023.
