176: Maybe the next one, darling. | Crash (1996)

Finally I've stepped into the world of David Cronenberg films. It really is fitting that the first one I see and review is Crash from 1996. It was both me and Charles' first watch and we were enthralled. The exploration of subcultures I always find fascinating and this certain was that. We talk about the physical reactions to car crashes, how James Spader is THAT one, and constantly remind you that it's not the same film as that abomination that won Best Picture in 2004.

off-topic rants include: who we would like to see in the film now, Christopher Meloni, Coen films, the history of NC-17 movies

Black People Love "Thirteen" ft. Palmira Muñiz

Black People Love "Thirteen" ft. Palmira Muñiz

Get ready to have the curtains pulled back on Catherine Hardwick's "Thirteen," a movie that holds a mirror up to adolescence with unsettling clarity. Guest co-host, MaxFun Producer Palmira Muñiz and I reflect on the emotional odyssey within this film's raw portrayal of youth, exploring the controversial layers of manipulation, survival, and the rocky landscape of female friendships. We also don't shy away from examining the ethical conundrums faced when young actors bring such vivid, and often painful, stories to life. It's a discussion that not only dissects the story on screen but also the broader implications it has within society and the film industry itself.

But this episode isn't all heavy-hearted introspection; join us as we stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about SoCal school life and the cultural touchstones of the early 2000s. Palmira and I break down the trends that defined an era, from the infamous Skechers craze to the quirks of teenage rebellion. Tying it all together, we introduce fresh segments and insights that promise to keep you hooked and perhaps, see a bit of your own story reflected back at you. Stay tuned, follow the journey, and let’s keep the conversation as authentic as the films we love.

    David Bruckner on 'Broadcast News'

    David Bruckner on 'Broadcast News'

Today, director David Bruckner talks with Jordan about feeling seen by Holly Hunter's character, Jane Craig, in the 1987 classic, BROADCAST NEWS. Directed by James L. Brooks, it's a journalism....satire? rom-com? dramedy?... starring Hunter, Albert Brooks, and William Hurt. It's one of those movies that is so prescient about what news media would become. And for David Bruckner -- whose latest film is this year's HELLRAISER -- saw in it some parallels with what it feels like to be a creator in any medium.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the new trailer for 65.

    Noah Segan on 'Raising Arizona'

    Noah Segan on 'Raising Arizona'

Actor Noah Segan -- or, should we say, writer/director/producer/actor Noah Segan -- is the star and creative force behind his directorial debut, BLOOD RELATIVES. In it, he plays a century-old, lone-wolf vampire who suddenly has a teenage daughter to think about. Segan, a dad himself, chose another suddenly-a-father character for today's epsiode: H.I. McDonnough (Nicolas Cage) from the 1987 Coen Brothers comedy Raising Arizona. Listen and learn how fatherhood, creative genesis, vampirism, and work/life balance are all mixed into the space between these two films, made 35 years apart.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about an action movie really straddling that naughty/nice divide: Violent Night.

Home for the Holidays - I feel like the ending is weird

This week, Jenna and Theresa belatedly celebrate Thanksgiving with a viewing of Home for the Holidays, a 90's dramatic comedy that features a "dysfunctional" family that's actually really nice.  Featuring Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr, and Dylan McDermott, this movie really has it all.  Huge shoutout for our friend Kelly who is not our established and official Thanksgiving movie expert for the recommendation!

    Blood Simple (1984)

The film Blood Simple (1984) was a launch pad for a lot of top Hollywood talent including Joel and Ethan Coen, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Frances McDormand. It's also a pretty solid flick. Kinda like the Evil Dead of film noir. Jason Furie and Adam Roth review and discuss this dark, gritty, and violent film featuring an excellent ensemble cast. They also try and figure out if it has anything to do with JTT or The Lion King. Maybe?
