Ep 24 Antonio Lucio - Humanization of Leadership.

Ep 24 Antonio Lucio - Humanization of Leadership.

Let’s start by stating that our guest was recently inducted into the American Marketing Association Hall of Fame, held multiple C-level roles at head-turning brands like Facebook, HP, Visa and Pepsico, and graced several ranks of the Forbes Most Influential CMOs. We warned him that our podcast wasn’t going to make him famous. Then again, he IS already famous. Yet, despite all the accolades and measurable success, he may be one of the most chill and down to earth people in the business we met.

Antonio Lucio - a father to 5 daughters, brother to 3 sisters and a devoted son of a strong mother figure - shares how surrounded by strong and capable women taught him to listen at two levels and shaped him as leader. In all his roles, he was able to deliver business results while significantly increasing the representation of women and people of color across senior levels in the entire marketing ecosystem: clients, agencies and production houses. Today, he leads his company 5S aimed at advancing the marketing practice through marketing transformation and Diversity and Inclusion.

While Antonio’s resume with 40-year corporate experience may seem as a straight line up to the right, he opens up about both his ups and downs because he’s a firm believer of telling all the stories - the good, the bad and the ugly. Divorce. Losing his true north. Chronic depression. All led to some of the most difficult and also the most transformational times in his life. In our conversation, he emphasizes the importance of being candid about leadership. Sometimes you’re not having fun leading. Listen in for an insightful and at times vulnerable peek into the life of one of the greatest executives of our times.

Episode 01: The Case of Being Black, Female and Human

Episode 01: The Case of Being Black, Female and Human

In this episode, Empowerment Starts Here with Angela Walker. In it, she talks about the vocation to be human (as defined by Paulo Freire in the Pedagogy of the Oppressed [1970]). In the conversation, Angela Walker (the Informant) and Angela Dye (the Host) talk about agency, about giftedness, about the body as all experiences of being. The greatest value of this conversation is a consideration of what it means to be dehumanized (by way of various forms of oppression) as well as the rights and responsibilities to be fully human.

027: Brands Can Not Own Their Audience

027: Brands Can Not Own Their Audience

Can an audience or a social media branded community be owned? What does it mean to be owned? You have invested time and resource into building and nurturing your social community for your organization. Do you think you have a right to control them?

The truth is you can NOT own your audience. We should not be trying to control communities or the human beings within them.

It is more about communicating and engaging WITH other human beings versus communicating TO them.

Instead we should be inspiring, energizing and influencing conversation. The focus should be on value, context, relevancy and giving, not control.

017: Social Media Communities - Build, Grow, Nurture and Sustain

How do you leverage social media to build, nurture, grow and sustain meaningful, connected and powerful communities?

It takes time, patience and an investment in people as human beings, not just dollars. It requires as much art as it does science.

Just as building relationships with human beings one to one takes time, nurturing communities to earn the support and develop loyal tribes of brand evangelists takes even more time.

Many marketing and business leaders wrongly assume they can simply hop on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter and have an instant community waiting on the edge of their seat to engage, contribute and become loyal brand evangelists. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

We all know the foundation of technology, infrastructure and even the way we communication is changing underneath our feet almost by the minute. The only guarantee we have for tomorrow is change. Just as becoming a social business is a journey, not a destination, communities are much the same.

Building communities requires trust, investment in time, resource and development and dissemination of content that inspires and connects humans in meaningful ways.
