Episode #154 - Hell's Decibels USA Tour - Haunted Turf, Bus Fiascos and the Windy City

This week, our coverage of the 2023 Hell's Decibels Tour reaches the halfway point, as Night Demon roll through St. Paul, Minnesota; Chicago, Illinois; and Des Moines, Iowa. You will hear tour stories about clown bars, haunted venues, sickly Satan, white-knuckle bus rides, stolen trucks, Ethiopian food, and no sleep at all.  The band explains how they dealt with and overcame distinctly different brands of adversity each night.  As always, we bring you noteworthy audio clips from every performance.  The episode wraps up with Night Demon and their tourmates Satan enduring yet another hellish overnight bus ride to the 2 Minutes to Tulsa festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

    Bracketology - Albums of 1985

No new episode this week while Dylan is in the desert and Justin is working overtime. Instead we are going to share a preview of what is behind our Patreon paywall. We have a series of bonus audio called Bracketology where we pit albums from the same year against each other. This was our first attempt at Bracketology without a guest, but if you enjoyed it we have more on our Patreon.

Episode 56: A Return Conversation with Dan Murphy of the Scarlet Goodbye

Episode 56: A Return Conversation with Dan Murphy of the Scarlet Goodbye
Join me as former Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy makes his long-awaited return not only to this show but to the music industry as a whole! In this episode, Dan talks about his new band the Scarlet Goodbye (https://thescarletgoodbye.com/) and its brand-spanking new debut album Hope’s Eternal. The band is a duo, with Dan being joined by fellow Minneapolis singer/songwriter Jeff Arundel. Dan left Soul Asylum and the music biz about 10 years ago, reappearing every now and again for a one-off Golden Smog show. Dan recounts what led him back to music, how much the industry has changed over the last decade, and how he and Jeff became fast friends during the pandemic to write and record this album. We discuss four songs—Angel Dust, Panic & Blame, Julieann, and Celebrated Summer. Dan talks about how Husker Du—and Bob Mould in particular—influenced and mentored him during Soul Asylum’s early years. We cover a ton of ground in this episode, so sit back, grab a beer, and listen in!

    On this week's show, we...

    • spend quality time with the superlative new record from The Mountain Goats
    • celebrate 30 years of Sugar's Copper Blue
    • feature 4 albums that - in our humble opinion - represent the artistic sweet spot of 4 very distinctive singer/songwriters.

All this & much, much less!

Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.

Ep. 102 - SST Records & The Sound of the Underground w/ Jim Ruland

Ep. 102 - SST Records & The Sound of the Underground w/ Jim Ruland

Jim Ruland ("Forest of Fortune," "Do What You Want: The Story of Bad Religion") joins us this week to discuss his wonderful new book "Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise and Fall of SST Records" (available at your local indie bookstore or at bookshop.org). Black Flag, Hüsker Dü, The Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Screaming Trees and so many more influential bands called SST home from its founding in the very early 1980's into the '90s. Ruland's thoroughly researched and very accessible book chronicles these bands and SST's, well ... rise and fall.

Also this week, we look at the MLB standings as baseball crosses the Memorial Day threshold. We also talked about this video and this one.

    Check It Out!
Andrew: Stephen Sanchez, "Until I Found You"
Rex: Traitors Gate, "Devil Takes the High Road" reissue
Craig: Delta Spirit's new album "One Is One," released May 20. The band released the album's first single, "What's Done is Done" (NSFW) on March 21, World Down Syndrome Day.

Errata: It's a safety pin, not a clothes pin. Ruland was correct - as we recorded the episode was being recorded, the Dodgers and Yankees were tied for MLB's best record. For some reason, Craig kept mispronouncing  Hüsker Dü, as though it was a Nebraska band. It was Mark McGuire, not Albert Pujols. We really should have asked Andrew about Cindy.

Ep. 122: Everything Turns Grey - Goth Rock vol.III Featuring Brent Zius

Ep. 122: Everything Turns Grey - Goth Rock vol.III Featuring Brent Zius

It’s been unusually dark, cold, and grey here in Atlanta, GA for the past few days, so the boys thought it best to bring on a guest who is an authority on all things grim and ghastly. They donned all-black garb, guy-liner, and a healthy dose of black no. 1 on their mop tops and welcomed Mr. Brent Zius and his coffin full of goodies to the firehouse. Brent schools us on the dark and ethereal world of Goth Rock…

What is it we do here at InObscuria? In most shows Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week is different as our guest, Brent Zius, provides the playlist for your 2 rock n’ roll grave robbers to react to. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

Don’t forget to check out Brent’s latest project album: Angelspit Vs. Ice Planet 9000 – Sequence 1: Glass Jar on Bandcamp here!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Ash Code – “Fear” from Fear EP (2021)
    2. The Bolshoi – “Away” from Friends (1986)
    3. Kill Shelter – “As Trees Do Fall” from Damage (2018)
    4. Pink Turns Blue – “I Coldly Stare Out” from If Two Worlds Kiss (1987)
    5. Long Night – “East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon” from Barren Land (2018)
    6. Play Dead – “Isabel” from The Promised Land (1984)
    7. Delphine Coma – “We Never Sleep” from Leaving The Scene (2018)
    8. Angelspit Vs. Ice Planet 9000 – “The Great Empty” from Sequence 1: Glass Jar (2022)

Ep. 109: Old Soles - A Shoegaze Revival

Ep. 109: Old Soles - A Shoegaze Revival

This week your rock n’ roll vampires suck on the neck of a long-forgotten genre that emerged in the late 80s – early 90s. A genre that exploited obscured vocals, guitar distortion, effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume: SHOEGAZE. Primarily based in the UK, these bands used the artistry of guitar innovation to paint some wonderfully layered sonic canvases! If you have a preconceived notion that you don’t like this stuff, we ask that you give this episode a shot as you might be surprised how much it rocks…

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we focus on the FORGOTTEN. If you were into this music when it came out back in the early 90s, chances are that you haven’t revisited it in a while. Come along on this ride with us and spend the next 90-min staring at your feet! We hope we re-introduce some of you to these bands and turn others on to something completely new!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Swervedriver – “Blowin’ Cool” from Mezcal Head (1993)
    2. Ride – “Here And Now” from Nowhere (1990)
    3. Drop Nineteens – “Limp” from National Coma (1993)
    4. Catherine Wheel – “Kill Rhythm” from Chrome (1993)
    5. Lift To Experience – “These Are The Days” from The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads (2001)
    6. Kitchens Of Distinction – “Sand On Fire” from Capsule: The Best Of Kitchens Of Distinction 1988-1994 (1994)
    7. My Bloody Valentine – “Only Shallow” from Loveless (1991)

Queen - How did they reproduce Bohemian Rhapsody in concert?

Queen had just released “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 1976, with a ground-breaking film clip, and the question was, “Can they play the clip live?”.  Well, they not only did it, but they blew everyone's socks off!

Mick and the Phatman were there and recall one of the best concerts ever seen in Australia.

From Freddy Mercury appearing in silhouette, to a leap straight into a perfect recreation of the "rock" part of the song they showed 5,000 awestruck Aussies how it was done!

References:  Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sugar, Copper Blue, Bob Mould, Husker Du, ABBA, Toto, Frenzal Rhomb and a show with Bo Diddley, Sherbet and Cold Chisel all on the one bill.
