Super Bowl Movie Draft: Casting the All-Time Cinematic Football Team

Super Bowl Movie Draft: Casting the All-Time Cinematic Football Team

Get ready for a romp through the reel as Cory and Nick draft our ultimate cinematic football teams, cherry-picking from the fictional greats of film lore. Snuggle up with your team jersey and a bucket of popcorn; it's time to merge the end zone with the silver screen.

Imagine Al Pacino leading a locker room with Denzel Washington by his side – that's the kind of star-studded coaching dream team we're potentially talking about. We argue coaching philosophies, play armchair quarterback, and share a laugh over some unexpected surprises. We're not just assembling a team; we're celebrating the stories that have shaped our view of the gridiron, from the heartwarming to the downright hilarious.

We're tossing the pigskin with characters that brought more than just athletics to the big screen; they've brought life lessons, belly laughs, and sometimes even animals. So join us as we relive the glory, the drama, and the quirky moments that make football movies an unforgettable part of our cultural tapestry. It's a fantasy draft where film buffs and football fans score big.

This week we bring you melodic hooks, syrupy vocal harmonies, energetic performances, and "happy"-sounding music! Better said: POWER POP! Rev up your Tesla coils people! Get up and get moving this week as we present something to sing along with, while also being cracked in the ribs by fantastically distorted guitars!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Family Ties: Dan Santat on Childhood, Parenthood, and Finding Himself

    On Today's Show

    • "It (TV) was my junk food, but also it was my in with the kids to be able to talk about pop culture, to know all the little nuances and jokes about the cultural zeitgeist things.” - Dan Santat

Media and stories around us around us are more than just entertainment. They provide a common space, a piece of the world around us that connects us to others. We learn from these stories, shape our own views and ideas, and listen to and share these ideas with others.

Dan Santat, a son of Thai immigrants in rural SoCal, found solace and belonging in the storytelling of 80's TV shows and movies, connecting with others' experiences and perspectives. His fascination with storytelling coupled with his talent for drawing led him on a journey of self-discovery that would ultimately diverge from the career path his parents had urged him to pursue.

In this episode, Dan shares openly about his fraught relationship with his dad. Dan’s honesty is humorous and nostalgic and real all at once. He talks about the freedoms and limitations of growing up in the 1980s and how they helped him discover a passion for storytelling as a means of communicating. Dan also tells us about his experience of embracing art, despite his parents' differing expectations, and how his journey has impacted the messages he imparts to students he meets today.

Episode #154 - Hell's Decibels USA Tour - Haunted Turf, Bus Fiascos and the Windy City

This week, our coverage of the 2023 Hell's Decibels Tour reaches the halfway point, as Night Demon roll through St. Paul, Minnesota; Chicago, Illinois; and Des Moines, Iowa. You will hear tour stories about clown bars, haunted venues, sickly Satan, white-knuckle bus rides, stolen trucks, Ethiopian food, and no sleep at all.  The band explains how they dealt with and overcame distinctly different brands of adversity each night.  As always, we bring you noteworthy audio clips from every performance.  The episode wraps up with Night Demon and their tourmates Satan enduring yet another hellish overnight bus ride to the 2 Minutes to Tulsa festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The 5th Down: Fictional Football Fantasy Draft!

The 5th Down: Fictional Football Fantasy Draft!

    WE'RE BACK!

It has been a minute, and we could not be more excited to be back with yet another episode of The 5th Down, your favorite football podcast, and more importantly back with the entire crew!  And on today's very special episode of 5th, we'll be dipping our toes back into the NFL with a small discussion on the futures of Dalvin Cook and Deandre Hopkins, as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Sound a little random? Well give it a listen and find out exactly how and why those 3 topics all come together!

AND FINALLY, a highly requested segment that we finally found the time to do, a FICTIONAL FOOTBALL FANTASY DRAFT!  What exactly is that you ask? Well here were our rules:

    1. We are the GM's of an entirely fake franchise.  We must select players for our fictional fantasy organizations.
    2.  We must treat this like a true NFL team where you can only budget for 5 major impact players (under the assumption that any of our choices will be the "Stars" of the team)
    3. All players drafted must be fictional characters from movies and television (Biopics do not count)
    3.  You must select a fictional Head Coach for your team (not included in the 5 player count)
    4. The Draft will be held in traditional Snake Draft fashion
    5. Each player can be either offense or defense, it's entirely up to you!

And that's about it!  From some comedic choices, to no brainer ones, and everything in between, we made OUR choices, and hope that you guys will vote on our instagram (@ThePoiNSoyPodcast) or via twitter with the name of your favorite team's GM and the #PoiNSoy to let us know who you think had the best team!

    Good Vibes and Love,

    Poi N Soy

All this & much, much less!

Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.

    View Appreciation With Mike Carrozza

As always, when a friend comes to town, we come to talk to business.  And no one knows numbers quite like Mike Carrozza.   Two Mikes?  That's too many.  If one thing ties us all together, it's Jersey City (the sixth borough).  We have t-shirts now if you want one (I bet you do).  If it isn't abundantly clear we're dudes in our 30s, we genuinely have to check in with each other to make sure "Hey, it's not your birthday today, right?"  Realtors and eggs- the final combat.  If you've never ironed your grilled cheese, you've never met a touring comedian.  Sport Vegetables.

Episode 56: A Return Conversation with Dan Murphy of the Scarlet Goodbye
Join me as former Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy makes his long-awaited return not only to this show but to the music industry as a whole! In this episode, Dan talks about his new band the Scarlet Goodbye (https://thescarletgoodbye.com/) and its brand-spanking new debut album Hope’s Eternal. The band is a duo, with Dan being joined by fellow Minneapolis singer/songwriter Jeff Arundel. Dan left Soul Asylum and the music biz about 10 years ago, reappearing every now and again for a one-off Golden Smog show. Dan recounts what led him back to music, how much the industry has changed over the last decade, and how he and Jeff became fast friends during the pandemic to write and record this album. We discuss four songs—Angel Dust, Panic & Blame, Julieann, and Celebrated Summer. Dan talks about how Husker Du—and Bob Mould in particular—influenced and mentored him during Soul Asylum’s early years. We cover a ton of ground in this episode, so sit back, grab a beer, and listen in!

This is my favorite episode of this seven part series for obvious reasons. It covers Nirvana and also introduced me to a bunch of other bands as well. Featuring one of my favorite people in music, Henry Rollins who gives his takes on the scene in the 80s. We hear from the producers on the construction of the songs, the fame aspect and pressures, and end on a somber note.

The rise of alternative rock in the USA. From its early underground days where bands like Black Flag drew inspiration from the DIY ethos of punk, Left Of The Dial traces the history of the network of fans, clubs and fanzines that sustained the scene and launched the careers of bands like R.E.M., The Pixies and Hüsker Dü. The film takes a fresh look at the explosion of the Seattle scene, culminating in the success of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain, an artist whose triumph and tragedy continues to cast an inescapable shadow.
