Living with a Brain Stem Tumor: Finding Faith and Purpose

Living with a Brain Stem Tumor: Finding Faith and Purpose

As a young child, Kyle Campbell was diagnosed with an inoperable brain stem tumor, which caused symptoms from difficulty speaking and swallowing to nausea and general ill health. While radiation therapy in his teens alleviated some of Kyle’s symptoms, effects of the tumor (and side effects of his treatments) persist to this day. Now a husband, father of three, and author, Kyle is living a full, meaningful life. Through his difficulties, Kyle has developed a deep trust in God and has learned to live on purpose with faith, focus, and flexibility.

Get your copy of Kyle’s book: Beyond Belief: How Living with a Brain Stem Tumor Brought Faith and Purpose to Life

Kyle Campbell is a Christian, a preacher, a poet, a philosopher, a professor, and an advocate… but some of his favorite identities are husband and father. He has a BA in Philosophy from Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, and an MA in Rehabilitation Counseling from California State University, Fresno. Kyle currently holds a position serving students in higher education.

    KEY QUESTIONS:

    • Have you ever asked, “Why me?!”?
    • How do you define your identity?
    • How can you find purpose and hope when suffering seems endless?

    KEY SCRIPTURES:

    • “I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” -Ecclesiastes 3:10–11
    • “As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’” John 9:1–5

Episode 88 - Redefining The System Of Ableism- Journey Of a Psychologist With Visual Impairment

Episode 88 - Redefining The System Of Ableism- Journey Of a Psychologist With Visual Impairment

On today's episode of Yours Mentally we talk and learn about the journey of a visually impaired counselling psychologist . This episode is in conversation with Kankam Khosla who is a Counselling Psychologist at Karma Center For Counselling and Wellbeing.

We begin the episode by asking Kankam that we read that she is a visually impaired Counselling Psychologist. We asked her to tell our listeners a bit about her impairment and how does it impact her everyday professional life?
We then ask her what challenges did she face on the road to becoming a psychologist because of her impairment?
We also asked whether her impairment affect any of her capacities and abilities as a psychologist? If yes, how does she deal with it? Is there anything she does differently in her sessions?
Then Aman asks tells her he's read that when one doesn’t have a certain sense organ, the rest of their sense organs make up for the loss of that one. He then asks her if she agrees with this? If yes, does she think it helps her in her therapeutic practice in any way?
We also ask if she has ever felt that she received differential treatment from her clients or employers because of her impairment? How does she deal with this?
Lastly, we ask her if there are any people with disabilities listening to this episode, what advice would you give them?

    How to Get Better Sleep

    How to Get Better Sleep

Millions of people have trouble getting enough sleep and are looking for solutions. Dove award winning pianist and All Heart podcast host Paul Cardall, who's experienced insomnia as a result of past medical challenges, explains the process of sleep and how music is helping people achieve the REM stage. That final and most important stage of fulfilling a deep sleep happens less and less as we age. Paul talks about his SLEEP project featuring 3 songs he composed during the pandemic to help him enjoy better sleep. He's making this personal tool available to fans so they can wake up refreshed and in a good mood.  This is the 42nd episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall.

    LISTEN TO SLEEP

Why should you listen to this music before going to bed? Music can aid sleep by helping you feel relaxed and at ease. With streaming apps and portable speakers, it’s easier than ever to take advantage of the power of music wherever you go. Given music’s accessibility and potential sleep benefits, it might be a good time to try adding it to your nightly routine. We’ve known for years that music has the ability to enhance our moods and help us relax. This is because music affects different areas of the brain, and stimulates feel-good chemicals. SLEEP is created with certain frequencies that are known to trigger the sleep process in the brain, while relaxing the body.

Anthem also owns music made popular by Tim McGraw, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Keith Urban, Jason Aldean, the Canadian trio Rush, and countless others.

American Songwriter Magazine invited Cardall is also the host of a successful podcast, All Heart with Paul Cardall, and a YouTube series All Heart Adventures, featuring Cardall in various "bucket list" scenarios--living his life to the fullest, with gratitude and appreciation.
