    Ari Weinzweig, Zingerman's

On today's episode of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer is on-location in Ann Arbor, her college town of The University of Michigan (#goblue!), with her guest Ari Weinzweig, the radical CEO and co-founding partner of the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, which includes the legendary Zingerman’s Delicatessen, which opened over 40 years ago, in addition to 13 other businesses (all around the Ann Arbor area), with more than 23 managing partners. Recognized by Inc Magazine as one of “The World's 10 Top CEOs (They Lead in a Totally Unique Way);” by the James Beard Foundation as one of the “Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America,” and the recipient of a Bon Appetit Lifetime Achievement Award — Ari has charted a new path for creating and growing a business. Rather than replicate the original, and now iconic, Zingerman’s Delicatessen, Ari and his partner Paul Saginaw made the conscious decision to create very different businesses, with their own managing partners, that would instead replicate the original Zingerman’s values, which Ari has continued to expand upon and write about extensively. He is the author of the four-part series Zingerman’s Guide to Good Leading, as well as a public speaker and writes a weekly e-newsletter. Today's show also features Shari's PR tip to be radical; Speed Round; Industry News on The New York Times article, "The New Reality for College Dining Halls: Dozens of Dietary Restrictions" by Priya Krishna; and Solo Dining experience at the latest location of NY culinary and cultural icon, Russ & Daughters, in NYC's Hudson Yards neighborhood.

Peter Scrivener - Former rugby star and business owner

Peter Scrivener - Former rugby star and business owner

Peter and the interviewer discussed the meaning of a business mindset to Peter. He believes that being positive and learning from mistakes is key to success. He also discussed his upbringing, having gone to Cooper's for senior school and the Bell School for junior school.

The interviewer then asked Peter to tell them one thing about his upbringing that reflects on who he is today, to which he replied that, like the interviewer, he is from a similar background. He asked the interviewer what school they went to, to which the interviewer replied that they went to Monteagle. The conversation tells the story of a man's experience of going professional in rugby while in school. The man talks about how he was five years ahead of his friend in terms of going professional, and how he would come back to the school to talk to aspiring rugby players. He reflects on the importance of giving back, and how teachers are often underrated and underpaid. He also mentions that he had a 10 month trading assistant job at Merrill Lynch during his university degree, which was a great opportunity and taught him a lot. He also says that his parents were very supportive throughout his journey, and that it's important to have supportive teachers and parents to help kids reach their potential.

The speaker was talking about his experience of taking a gap year between high school and university. He spent six months in the city working in a finance office and six months at Cooper's with Nick and Eddie Veen, teaching economics and helping out in the sports department. He then went on to become a professional rugby player at Wasps. On his first day, he was one of three out of the whole squad who were from comprehensive schools. He describes the team as great and mentions many of the players on it. He looks back on his placement year as a steep learning curve in both the city and school.

Bringing Your A-Game to Brand Preservation with Kirk Beaudoin, Award-Winning Facilities Leader

Bringing Your A-Game to Brand Preservation with Kirk Beaudoin, Award-Winning Facilities Leader

Welcome to Elevating Brick and Mortar.

A podcast about how operations and facilities drive brand performance.

On today’s episode, we talk with Kirk Beaudoin. Kirk is a passionate and personable Facilities Management professional with over 20 years of industry experience across multiple global brands such as J. Crew and Nike and the former president of Connex FM, the Multi-Site Facilities Management Network.

In this episode, Kirk discusses the importance of following the golden rule within the industry, why it’s important to offer the best service for the best price, and why those working in facilities are heroes without capes.

    Guest Bio:

Kirk is a passionate and personable Facilities Management professional with over 20 years of industry experience across multiple global brands such as J. Crew and Nike and the former president of Connex FM, the Multi-Site Facilities Management Network.  Living by the 'never stop learning' mantra, Kirk earned the LEED Green Associate, FMA, RFMP, and CTS designations and certificates in Facilities, Property, Project, & Emergency Management.

    Guest Quote

“So many people operate differently out there. My view, and it's as long as the company supports this view, is you give, whether it's from me or from the partners that I partner with, you give the highest quality service, the most reliable service that you're looking for. At the most affordable rate, right? Not the reverse. You don't go out looking for what's the most affordable rate and then accept what's the highest quality and reliability I can get for that rate. I do it on the flip side, so I know that we're spending a little bit more than the cheapest possible, but that's because I can't dip below a certain level of quality and reliability.”  - Kirk Beaudoin
