Knowledge management is flows, bridges and mindset

Raûl says his role is a horizontal one, and needed in all enterprises whatever the industry. "I'm a plumber of information" he says and is more concerned about the flow than about the content. His concern is that the right information gets to the right people. He build bridges between the islands inside organizations that have grown and evolved over the years. Information sharing is above all a question of mindset. The generation of "knowledge is power" needs to evolve. "Knowledge management is people management" he says.

Raûl calls himself an "amateur philosopher on his LinkedIn profile. I asked him why and that led into a discussion about his website The Knowledge Argument.

Why do you call yourself an amateur philosopher?

It's good to put  arguments you have with friends about philosophical concepts in writing because "of course you cannot just talk a deep philosophy through WhatsApp."

He also sees putting his thoughts in writing as a legacy he is leaving for his daughter.

In this latest episode of the Voice of Veritas Zoe Sands, Social and Community Marketing at Veritas interviews Arthur Dell, CTO for Emerging Markets on The Datasphere. During the interview, Arthur states that to identify and classify critical data is sometimes difficult to solve, using machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to help distinguish between what is critical data and what is not is essential. The more information you have the more difficult it is to manually classify data, hence the need for using automation in classification.

Mobile, the Internet of Things (IoT), Multi-Cloud, Digital Transformation, AI, Machine Learning and Quantum Computing are all driving change and new business opportunities but are also creating exponential amounts of data. With the adoption of new technologies people are creating unstructured data at a phenomenal rate and this is a challenge for organisations on how to classify this data and identify what is relevant for business and what can be used to help gain competitive advantage.

Arthur also touches on cloud as an enabler and disruptor for digital transformation, and that any transformation an organisation implements has the potential to create risk because of change. He also talks in more detail about the use cases for AI and quantum computing and that coupled closely together are the next frontier of disruption. He advises that to derive value from data you shouldn’t demonise data, but instead harness the power of data by using AI and machine learning. In today's episode of DC Entrepreneur, Grant Elliott, Founder and CEO of Ostendio speaks with George. The word Ostendio in Latin means to show or demonstrate, and Grant helps illustrate his journey from working in the corporate world to founding a Cyber Security & Information Management company. Building on ideas being worked on by government's Metadata and Vocabularies Working Group he examines how, with some simple controls and standards, that metadata could go on to open up our understanding, use and re-use of government's information across time and (cyber)space, solving digital transfer and opening up new ways to access our records along the way.

A specialist in the management of digital information, Mark worked with the team that developed the understanding and application of the principles of Digital Continuity. He has been particularly focused on making sure the future can become the past.
