20 августа Министерство юстиции признало СМИ — «иноагентами» телеканал «Дождь» и расследовательское издание «Важные истории». «Иноагентами» стали и семь журналистов «Важных историй» лично. Теперь в списке «иностранных агентов» 43 фигуранта (и отдельные журналисты, и редакции как юридические лица). За последние четыре месяца реестр расширился на 26 позиций.

Пресс-секретарь президента России Дмитрий Песков неоднократно заявлял, что признание независимых СМИ «иноагентами» не ведет их к закрытию, просто «накладывает… дополнительные обязанности». При этом, например, издание VTimes, признанное «иноагентом» в мае 2021 года, закрылось.

Спикер МИД Мария Захарова тоже не видит в этой дискриминирующей мере ничего страшного и считает, что в США действует аналогичная норма. Она ссылается на закон о регистрации иностранных агентов (FARA), принятый еще в 1938 году. Он обязывает людей, действующих в интересах каких-либо стран, раскрывать свои отношения (финансовые и политические) с этими государствами. При этом FARA куда мягче, чем его российский аналог. В США нельзя признать «иноагентом» СМИ или человека, работающих в интересах граждан своей страны.
