Early Stage 2023: IRL is B-A-C-K

Early Stage 2023: IRL is B-A-C-K

This week we recorded at Early Stage, TechCrunch's event for founders who are building startups from the ground up.

Sadly, our dear friend Natasha Mascarenhas took ill, and we had to lean on Alex for the episode. Happily, though, Darrell from the TechCrunch team was sitting next to us on the show floor so we tagged him in for some rocket knowledge.

Anyhoo, here's the run of show!

    • All things Early Stage: Notes from the show floor, what we can infer about attendance and a vibe check.
    • Elon's new, larger rocket went up (very good) and then went "boom" (not as good). Happily for the space race, the overall result of the launch was good. Rockets have a tendency to go boom when they are new, and it's a bit of the, well, testing process to have them do so. Sure, a non-boom result would have been better, but SpaceX wasn't planning on trying to reuse the parts anyway.
    • Tesla's earnings came out and investors are not that pleased. While there was some good stuff in the numerical set, price cuts at the company and moderating cash flow indicate that profitability gains could be harder to reach in the future.
    • And layoffs. Meta is cutting staff. Insider is cutting staff. BuzzFeed is cutting staff. It's a mess out there.

We are back at full strength next week — and no longer on the road — so expect regular service to resume. Hugs!

PANIC IN DC | Forbidden News Ep. 32

PANIC IN DC | Forbidden News Ep. 32

    • In the past week, we’ve had three more train derailments plus a truck with hazardous chemicals all over the country and a 5-acre plastic fire in Florida

    • Which made you forget about the three additional balloons that were shot down this week, after the one off the coast of South Carolina, remember that?

    • It might not look like it, but we are winning. Because of all of our efforts, we’ve won a battle against the tyrannical vaccine passports, but the war is not over. We have some more easy actions that you can take to win that war.

Leadership Lessons from a Global Journey (ft. Spriha Srivastava)

Leadership Lessons from a Global Journey (ft. Spriha Srivastava)

Spriha Srivastava on journalism, justice, and kindness

    OPENING QUOTE:

“At the end of the day, we are all humans, we all have our personal lives and we bring along those personal lives to work every day. So, for me, it's very important to be respectful and kind towards each other.”

    - Spriha Srivastava

    GUEST BIO:

Spriha Srivastava is the London bureau chief and the international executive editor for Insider, overseeing 100 journalists across the UK and Singapore in the pursuit of delivering a leading news service covering business, politics, and lifestyle. Prior to joining Insider, Spriha was the deputy digital news editor for CNBC International in London. She’s won a number of awards for her work, including the Iconic Women Creating a Better Tomorrow award from the Women Economic Forum and runner-up for Newcomer of the Year in the Santander Media Awards.

    CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:

    [7:50] - Melding Cultural Backgrounds

What Spriha’s Indian upbringing has taught her

In India, there are 28 states and over 100 spoken languages as well as practitioners of every major faith. There, diversity and inclusion aren’t just ideals to strive toward— they’re realities of everyday existence. Spriha brought that close connection to diversity with her to the UK, and it has helped inform her entire career. In that respect, she was ahead of the curve in terms of making those principles central to how companies hire, engage with employees, and more.

[14:34] - Employers and Personal Financial Health

    A vital role to play

In her interactions with the Financial Times magazine Money Management, Spriha saw firsthand how little many people understand about personal finance. Today, she feels that employers should take a more active interest in the financial wellbeing of their people. After all, people who are financially secure are better equipped to manage their careers, and have more mental space to think creatively about solutions to business problems. It’s a win-win for employers and employees alike.

    [20:07] - Lightning-Fast Leadership

Leading in the rapid paced world of journalism

In her first few journalism leadership roles, Spriha learned that you have to encourage your team members to step up and inspire confidence. Advocate for your team and lean into the best of them to help them step up to the next level. You also must advocate for yourself. In fast-paced fields like the world of news and journalism, there’s no time for imposter syndrome. You have to step up and lead.

[29:10] - Coach the Person, Not the Problem

Leading humans with no human interaction

When the pandemic hit, Spriha was reminded of the essential nature of listening to human beings and their needs— not just seeing them as business resources to be applied to problems. She became acutely aware of issues like no childcare, mental health struggles, and isolation. She learned that people can’t be their best when they are in an environment that doesn’t acknowledge and support their unique needs.

    [37:07] - Out for a Swim

An important lesson on leading by example

A recent CEO interview revealed a powerful insight to Spriha. A CEO concerned with burnout and long hours from his employee led him to look in the mirror, where he discovered he was setting the tone for long days with his actions— even if he wasn’t encouraging it with his words. He decided to be an example by attending fewer meetings in person and publicly stating when he was out of the office for personal reasons. His example had a powerful positive impact on his people.

[56:05] - Empathy: The Underrated Core of Leadership

On bringing our full selves to work each day

Even if it doesn’t feel directly relevant to our work, we all bring our personalities, the things we love, the things we hate, our fears, our aspirations, and our habits into the office (or Zoom call) every day. On days when those things can feel like a heavy burden, the value of having empathetic people around you at work— both in supervisors and peers— is incalculable. We should all strive to find those people, and be that person for those around us.

    District Attorney Summer Stephan

    District Attorney Summer Stephan

San Diego County is the 5th most populous county in the United States, and the second most populous county in California. The City of San Diego is, by many measures, one of the safest major cities in the United States. The San Diego DA’s office is the second largest DA’s office in California and has 1,000 employees.

Bio: Summer Stephan was the first DA in San Diego to rise through the ranks as a prosecutor to become the elected DA.  As a trial prosecutor, she tried more than 100 jury trials, including cases of complex homicides, sexually-violent predators, child molestation, sexual assaults, school shooting, and human trafficking-related cases. She served as Chief of the DA’s North County Branch and Chief of the Sex Crimes and Human Trafficking Division, a special victims unit she pioneered, and an area of the law where she is a national leader, named a “Modern Day Abolitionist” and received numerous awards.

Summer served on the Governor’s Task Force for High-Risk Sex Offenders and Sexually-Violent Predators. She spearheaded the innovative “Know the Price” campaign, which focused on reducing sexual assaults on college campuses. She also led the award-winning “The Ugly Truth” human trafficking awareness campaign as well as the “San Diego Opioid Project,” aimed at reducing opioid overdoses. Summer led a coordinated effort to protect the community from targeted mass violence with a School Threats Task Force that implemented a unified protocol with all 42 school districts in San Diego County. In addition, she began an effective Veterans Treatment model in North County inspired by a heroic Marine Corps veteran.

In June of 2018, San Diego County voters overwhelmingly elected Summer as District Attorney, a career prosecutor who has devoted her life to protecting children and families, and providing justice to the most vulnerable.

Show: DA Stephan talks about human trafficking, the prosecution of the Kelly Elementary School shooter, domestic violence, the opening of the North County Family Justice Center, the new Elder Justice Center, and much more.

Laws on the Books: Each week we end the episode on a light note and look at the laws on the books and do a quiz. 2 are real, 1 is fake; can you guess which one is the fake?

    1. In North Carolina, it’s illegal to have a bingo game last more than 5 hours.
    2. In South Carolina, it’s illegal to operate a dance hall within a quarter of a mile of a church.
    3. In Severance, Colorado, it’s illegal to throw snowballs.
