    Intentional Communities with Cynthia Tina

    Intentional Communities with Cynthia Tina

Do you happen to be someone that thinks the dream of the white picket fence and the manicured lawn doesn't sound all that appealing?

Maybe you are the kind of person that would rather live closer to nature? Or in a place with multiple generations living together with shared amenities?

From off-grid and sustainable agrihoods to urban ecovillages and income sharing communes,  "intentional community" is quickly growing in popularity as a housing concept.

On this podcast episode, Cynthia Tina, co-Director of the Foundation for Intentional Community (FIC), talks about her initial interest in intentional communities and how that led her on a quest across the globe to visit as many communities as she could.  She was then able to dove-tail her passion for deep living into a career helping to support the growing movement.

With 40,000 unique people visiting ic.org each month, Cynthia says that intentional community is on the rise. Community types  vary widely across the world. Some are newer communities that may still have quite a bit of work to do to be fully established. Others have been around for decades and have been through multiple generations.

Cynthia's advice to those interested in this type of living is to first check out their directory of intentional communities and to take time to visit places of interest. While many people have the desire to found their own communities, she says that it can be a lengthy process typically spanning 4-7 years. Through the foundation you can also find resources and a host of educational opportunities to learn about all facets of intentional communities.

#139 Helen Zuman "Mating in Captivity"

#139 Helen Zuman "Mating in Captivity"

After some short technical difficulties, I finally connected with today's guest, Helen Zuman, a tree-hugging dirt worshipper devoted to turning waste into food and the stinky guck of experience into fertile, fragrant prose. She holds a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard and a Half-FA in memoir from Hunter College. Raised in Brooklyn, she lives with her husband in Beacon, NY and Black Mountain, NC.

She is the author of Mating in Captivity (She Writes Press 2018), a memoir of her five years, post-Harvard, in a cult with a radical take on sex and relationships. Mating in Captivity received a starred review from Kirkus, was named a Kirkus Best Indie Memoir of 2018, was a finalist in Creative Nonfiction for the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses’ 2019 Firecracker Award, and was both first runner-up in memoir and a finalist for First Horizon and Grand Prize honors in the 2020 Eric Hoffer Awards. Other work has appeared in The New Farmers Almanac, in Communities and Livelihood magazines, and on the Foundation for Intentional Community’s website (ic.org).

Mating in Captivity: When recent Harvard grad Helen Zuman moved to Zendik Farm in 1999, she was thrilled to discover that the Zendiks used go-betweens to arrange sexual assignations, or “dates,” in cozy shacks just big enough for a double bed and a nightstand. Here, it seemed, she could learn an honest version of the mating dance – and form a union free of “Deathculture” lies. No one spoke the truth: Arol, the Farm’s matriarch, crushed any love that threatened her hold on her followers’ hearts. An intimate look at a transformative cult journey, Mating in Captivity shows how stories can trap us and free us, how miracles rise out of crisis, how coercion feeds on forsaken self-trust.

In addition to cults, we also talk about the journey to trust oneself, the "infinite growth myth," gift circles, her connection to a well balanced eco-village that is doing intentional living well and how she takes care of herself (no social media!). I can personally highly recommend her book even for those not remotely curious about how one gets pulled into a cult. It's extremely well written and uniquely empowering to hear some of the more difficult details of her story.

Looking for an intentional community or wondering about the health of one you're currently in? Helen's article may be of help to you. And if you do have friends, family or loved ones you fear are wrapped up in a cult, eh hm, political party, then Helen recommends some resources written by therapist and cult expert Steven Hassan. You can tune in to hear the best thing Helen's Mom did easing her exit from the cult mind-control.

Today's show was engineered by Nick Panken of Freedom Highway.

Amichai Lau-Lavie — First Aid for Spiritual Seekers

Forms of religious devotion are shifting — and there’s a new world of creativity toward crafting spiritual life while exploring the depths of tradition. Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie is a fun and forceful embodiment of this evolution. Born into an eminent and ancient rabbinical lineage, as a young adult he moved away from religion towards storytelling, theater, and drag. Today he leads a pop-up synagogue in New York City that takes as its tagline “everybody-friendly, artist-driven, God-optional.” It’s not merely about spiritual community but about recovering the sacred and reinventing the very meaning of “we.”

Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie is a rabbi and founding spiritual leader of Lab/Shul in New York City. He’s also the founding director of Storahtelling.

IC Sojourners Episode 5: How to be Everyday Sustainable
In this week’s show our guest is Chase Robbins from Everyday-Sustainable.com, originally from Shelbyville, Kentucky (just east of Louisville), Chase and his wife Victoria have decided to take their kids Kendal and Sloan on an adventure in sustainability. They are transitioning from the typical suburban American life to living at one of the many intentional communities in North America. What prompted this change is the economic, political, environmental, social and social developments in the last few years. They feel that the current system cannot be sustained for much longer and would like to pass on to their children a better situation. For that reason they have decided to make some pretty radical changes which might include relocating to an ecovillage. Chase tells us about this very interesting journey and the process of documenting it. You can find our more about their project by going to the Intentional Community Resources and Discussion for Families with Children group on Facebook, their FB page/blog or their website.
