Get Out of Your Own Way | James Mauler, Founder of Cadnetics

James Mauler was still early in his career when he decided to leave college and take a more hands-on approach with his education. Instead of completing a five-year degree in architecture, Jim realized that he could achieve his professional and financial goals by putting his drafting skills to work on the job. As an example, when computer-aided design (CAD) software was still in its infancy, he was the first person in his firm to volunteer to learn how to use it. This made him a go-to resource in the company, and it gave him the confidence he needed to know that he was on the right track.

In the early 1990s, Jim was terminated from the company that he was working for at the time. He describes this as a blessing in disguise because it gave him a compelling reason to start his own company the very next day. Jim has been at the helm of Cadnetics for nearly 30 years, and his business has undergone tremendous growth and transformation during that time. The firm, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, also has a presence in four other major markets throughout the country. Jim is currently realizing his vision of expanding to 10 cities in 10 years, and you can tell from our conversation that he is having a lot of fun in the process.

    1. So, I'm in my map....

    1. So, I'm in my map....

Can you can really get away with a Christmas tree all year round and why is a horse's leg Stephen's nemesis as a designer? Stephen, Amy & SJ debate these important topics in our very first podcast.

This episode is a little bit of an Easter special so eggspect some bantering about bunnies, bonnets and oddly, what Joey from Friends has to do with model making.

There's also some serious discussion around the relevance and importance of physical modelling versus CAD, laser printing and VR when demonstrating concepts to clients.

Head over to the NDA blog to see exactly what a sock bunny gnome looks like and see our tutor's finished egg scenes. You can vote for your favourite over on Instagram.

    Why PR is So Expensive

    Why PR is So Expensive

Have you ever wondered why it costs so much to hire a publicist? In this episode, Designer Discussions co-host and PR expert Mirjam Lippuner shares why that is and what options you have.

    • In interior design, “being published” is not optional, it’s required to be recognized.
    • Not unlike interior design, PR is a service, so publicists get paid for their time.
    • You pay for strategic expertise, industry experience, relationships
    • Different providers: Large agencies, boutique agencies, solo consultants
    • Different ways to charge: typically retainer - long-term because PR is long term, partnership - they are part of your team; Project; Hourly
    • Average cost
      • Retainers $3-5K
      • Hourly rates $100-350
    • PR is not cheap and it shouldn’t be!

DIY is an option! There are a lot great free resources, and Get Ink DIY offers a unique program that’s a hybrid of DIY and done-for-you.

    Don’t be afraid to play.

We asked our previous guest, Kia Weatherspoon (episode 35 - May 3, 2021), for an intro to someone she’d want to hear from – The first name on her list: Jessica Caldwell.

Jessica Caldwell is the founder of Folke Creative in Brooklyn NY, a boutique branding and design studio inspired by the stories of people, places, and things. She also runs the design blog: Design is Lit.

Today, Jessica will let us in on her "messy" process of design and also provides some wise advice on how to conjure creativity.

She starts her interview reflecting on a moment that eventually leads to a simple and beautiful statement from her:

“Life is filled with little luxuries, little glimmers of hope and love… if you’ll only just look for them."
