Building beyond Grief: Morgan Cheek's story of the loss of her twins, international adoption, and business built to help others cope

Morgan Creek joins me to share the powerful story of losing her twin daughters to a rare genetic mutation called HECW2. She shares about her daughters' diagnoses, her family's grieving process, and how this experience has changed her own platform.

    Episode At A Glance:

This week on The SavvyCast, Morgan Cheek of @seedsandleaven joins me to share her powerful testimony. Morgan and her husband had twin girls who were diagnosed with HECW2. HECW2 is an incredibly rare genetic mutation, and her girls were two of only seven children in the world to have it at the time. In this episode, Morgan shares about grieving her twin daughters, the process of adopting her son, and how she began WinMo Fitness to help people cope with trauma while building a healthy lifestyle.

    Who Is Morgan Cheek?

Morgan Cheek is the author of three books, the latest being Even In Darkness. She is the co-owner of WinMo Fitness, an online fitness company that specializes in fitness programming, nutrition coaching, and coaching accountability. Morgan has her Master's in Social Work, and WinMo Fitness also partners with studios and retreat centers to do conferences that focus on the mind/body connection and how the power of movement can tremendously help with trauma and stress.

She and her husband, Hugh, have three children- two in heaven, Bailey Grace (6) and Ally (7), and one on earth, James (who was adopted from China at the age of 7 and is now 11). Morgan is passionate about helping people believe they are already loved and accepted by God as is. She longs to help others understand how to live their best, authentic lives in the midst of all seasons. Additionally, Morgan is an endurance athlete who loves any kind of physical challenge. You won’t ever come to her house without finding several candles lit-and probably her latest baking project, too.

This is me Fiona Myles, born in the mid 60s. I'm married to the amazing Brian a gorgeous red head. We have one daughter Georgie and a son Connor.

Manchester has been our home for the past 18 years, a fabulous metropolis full of energy and history.

I started writing and telling stories from a fairly young age. My Mum bought me a typewriter when I was eight or nine years old. I battered away at that little typewriter day in and day out. Life moved on and the typewriter was laid to rest.

Fast forward 45 years and the laptop becomes my new typewriter. My passion as an author and blogger was reignited with a strong desire to bring hope in an awful period of time called "Lockdown." Visit the website HERE

Russian Orphanage to American Adoption with Oleg Lougheed

His start in life was inauspicious. At 9 years old, he relinquished his parents' rights and entered the Russian orphanage. At the age of 12, he decided to be adopted into a new family, in a new country, halfway across the world, to start a new life.

At 24 years old, he began his journey of helping others live the life they have always dreamed of, despite their hardships and misfortunes by allowing them to recognize the uniqueness and worth within their own story.

Extraordinary Unordinary Adoption Story with Simone Knego

Extraordinary Unordinary Adoption Story with Simone Knego

When I started this journey, I had no idea where my stories would take me. From learning to understand and appreciate entirely different cultures through our international adoptions to a rat totaling my minivan, I have thoroughly enjoyed the trips down memory lane that have helped me source stories and bits of wisdom to help others in their own journey. Though my kids may find my stories about their lives embarrassing, it all comes with the territory of honestly exploring motherhood, life, and a constantly evolving purpose. My stories define me, just as your stories define you. By sharing our stories, we learn, grow, and learn to laugh at ourselves while inspiring others to do the same.

Love Never Quits - RAD in Foster Care with Gina Heumann

Love Never Quits - RAD in Foster Care with Gina Heumann
Gina is a mom who has overcome enormous challenges to help my child heal from trauma. Her boys were adopted from Guatemala, and her youngest was neglected by his foster mom before they got him.
This trauma resulted in severe anger, anxiety, and violence, which made her afraid of her own child. He would frequently destroy property, punch holes in the walls, and try to hurt them.
He was eventually diagnosed with RAD. In 6th grade they hit "rock bottom", which involved getting kicked out of school, sent to the juvenile assessment center, appearance in court, summer of community service, and probation.
After discovering a new school designed for kids with social and behavioral issues and doing family-intensive therapy, her son slowly healed and he is doing really well now.

She wrote a book, Love Never Quits, about their journey and have dedicated part of her life to helping other trauma mamas.

She writes a blog, recently did a TEDx, and has been working on developing an online class for parents of kids healing from trauma.

This experience has altered the course of her life in so many ways, but now my goal is to help others and spread the word about the devastating effects of abuse or neglect on children.

Episode 89: Interview with Adoptive Family and Author!

This week we have a wonderful episode with our sweet friends - Brett and Jennifer Humphrey! They adopted their sweet daughter from China many years ago, and they share the beautiful ways that God was at work in their journey. It's amazing, and you are definitely going to want to hear all about it!

And Brett recently released his first two books of the Dragonborn series! We have been reading these out loud to our kids and they have been eating it up! This is a great read, that also has the theme of adoption in it! You, and your children will LOVE IT! You can purchase the books on Brett's website, as well as on Kindle and on Amazon. He is working on getting the Audible version out there!

The Good Word of the Day

"You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had"

    Philippians 2:5 NLT

Brett and Jennifer share a fun way that they have memorized this verse, and they call this an 'anchor verse', because it reminds them to humble themselves as Christ humbled himself.
