    Episode 375: F For Feeling

Peter Sobczynski returns to get you up to speed on what to add to your physical media collection. You may want to skip some of the bad horror on the show but there are also war movies and westerns featuring Steve McQueen, Gary Cooper and Bob Newhart! There’s a musical from Jacques Revette, a film from Patrice Leconte and a new 4K edition of one of Terry Gilliam’s best. Peter also certainly wants you to know about a film with Lea Seydoux that flew under the radar at the end of last year and that he is certainly a champion for one of the biggest hits of 1983.

Devotional Irene Cara: “Out Here On My Own”

Devotional Irene Cara: “Out Here On My Own”

Sometimes I wonder where I've been,
     Who I am,
     Do I fit in.
     Make believein' is hard alone,
     Out here on my own.

As a confused college student in 1980 these lyrics to the song “Out Here On My Own” written by the sibling songwriting duo Lesley Gore (lyricist) and Michael Gore (composer) and performed by Irene Cara spoke to me as I was trying to find my place in this world.

This week, we learned of the death of Irene Cara at age 63 of the talented singer who performed the electric title tracks in two aspirational self-expression movies of the 1980s, “Flashdance” and “Fame,”

Speaking of death, the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami said is Death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it.”  This confused college student who has now found his place in this world as a pastor agrees with that statement. However, when death comes to an iconic figure of your youth who was junior to you in age with so much more to give, I must wonder why God why?

In that wondering that I have come to know that it is OK to question death. When death occurs to a loved one, a famous person or a stranger we will have many emotions. We can be angry but respectful, we can feel the pain, we can experience the lost, and we can be disappointed.  However, what we should not do is to hide our feelings but rather we should express them to a friends, to family to a therapist and to God.

It may take years if ever to figure things out but know this we are not alone.
The Lord has promised that “I will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born,” Isaiah 66:9 NCV.

The song “Out Here On My Own counties with these words:

When I'm down and feelin' blue,
I close my eyes so I can be with you.
     Oh, baby be strong for me;
     Baby belong to me.
     Help me through.
     Help me need you.

All of us who have been touched by the talent of Irene Cara should know that while we maybe filling blue we are not alone.  We do fit in because God is with us. We do fit in because God will never leave us. We do fit in because even in death we will not be “Out Here On My Own”
