Transform Your Business with Supervision with Jessica Serdikoff Romola

Transform Your Business with Supervision with Jessica Serdikoff Romola

I LOVED recording this episode with Jessica Serdikoff Romola. I’m so excited to get it out into the world for all of you. Jess and I talked very openly and honestly about how supervision is so important for dietitians, for our career and for all the imposter feelings that we have. Jess termed the phrase “imposter feelings” — I love it – instead of “imposter syndrome” and we talk about why in the podcast episode.I think you’ll really enjoy hearing Jess and I discuss what goes into supervision and break down how it can absolutely transform your business as a dietitian.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • What is supervision and “imposter feelings”
    • Challenges dietitians face and how supervision can help by providing support, advocacy and growth
    • How to handle emotional reactions and overidentification with clients
    • Shifting into group supervision from 1:1 coaching

    Coasting is Hard

    Coasting is Hard

Here at Pursuing Private Practice, we are celebrating the holiday season! We know the holidays can bring up so many emotions, and we are wishing each of you all the self care and peace during this holiday season.

I wanted to take a second to talk about coasting in your business during the holidays. December is a time to coast as much as possible (at least that’s my own belief!). The reason for that is because there are so many other things going on in our lives that need extra attention: gift buying and giving, socializing, different routines, shifting childcare, etc. We cannot do all the things, and December is the perfect time to give yourself a break when it comes to your business growth.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • What is coasting?
    • Ideas for cutting back on your workload
    • How business impacts other areas of life
    • The negative feelings around coasting
    • How to know when it’s time to stop coasting

Aligning Your Expectations With the Reality of Building a Private Practice with Rebecca Lee

Aligning Your Expectations With the Reality of Building a Private Practice with Rebecca Lee

I loved recording this episode with Rebecca Lee. We talk about the complexities of building a business, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We talk about privilege and how that has impacted both of us in our abilities to build a business, and we talk about how that privilege shows up in our work.

Rebecca and I also have an important conversation about some of the black and white thinking that is so prevalent in the online business world, including a conversation around building a business without relying on social media.

There are a lot of great tips in this episode, especially if you are newer to the private practice world.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Building a business during the COVID-19 pandemic
    • Financial privilege and double-income households
    • Aligning expectations with the reality of building a private practice
    • Using social media in a way that reflects our values

Intuitive Eating and Sports Nutrition with Suzanne Smith

Intuitive Eating and Sports Nutrition with Suzanne Smith

I absolutely loved talking to Suzanne Smith for this episode!

We talk about so many different topics, but the one that I want to point out is the discussion we have about the black and white thinking that so many business owners adopt when they are building their business.

Suzanne was very open and honest about her own eating disorder recovery, and I love how she talked about transferring that black and white thinking about food to her business. I can completely relate with what she says.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Intuitive eating and sports nutrition
    • Black and white thinking and comparison in business
    • Having a healthy relationship with your business

Medical Nutrition Therapy and Intuitive Eating with Fiona Young

Medical Nutrition Therapy and Intuitive Eating with Fiona Young

Fiona Young joins me on this episode to talk about how we can merge MNT recommendations with an intuitive eating, non-diet, weight-inclusive approach.

We talk about how our own eating disorder recovery journeys have led us to want and crave healthier options for food. Nutrition is a big deal to both of us, but it’s only one aspect of someone’s overall health. Health outcomes are largely based on our environment, not our individual personal choices, but we do recognize that the influence that our choices do have can be important.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Making intuitive eating fit with treatment of chronic conditions
    • Transitioning from leaving full-time work to do part-time work + private practice and then to private practice only
    • Transitioning from a scarcity mindset to one of confidence
    • Appreciating eating nutrient-dense foods while also supporting others who shouldn’t be focused on the “health” of foods

Your Client Wants to Lose Weight… What Should You Do? with Elyssa Toomey

Your Client Wants to Lose Weight… What Should You Do? with Elyssa Toomey

So your client wants to lose weight.

As anti-diet dietitians, we aren’t immune to our clients wanting this. In fact, almost all (if not all!) of us have had to work through this with a client in the past. So what’s the right thing to do? How should we approach this?

This episode is a recording from a live workshop we held with the Dietitian Business School clients, and it was so valuable that we wanted to share the discussion with all of you.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Why our clients want to lose weight
    • Recognizing different lived experiences
    • Our role as clinicians in a weight-inclusive approach
    • How social justice issues play a role in our clients’ journeys

    The Stages of Business

    The Stages of Business

This podcast episode is a little bit different from normal, but I’m so excited to be recording this for all of you!

We are talking about the Stages of Business. This topic is actually based on a workshop I did for the dietitians in Dietitian Business School. This workshop was so well received that I was inspired to add it to our podcast content to share with those of you that are building a private practice but aren’t a member of Dietitian Business School yet.

One of the things I get asked most often from our community is: How do I know if I’m a good fit for Dietitian Business School? As we have built DBS, we have attracted business owners at many different levels in their businesses. We have worked to adjust our curriculum to serve all of these different Stages of Business: Starting, Growing, Scaling, and Coasting.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • How we define the 4 different stages of business
    • Why it’s important to know which stage of business you are in
    • What to focus on in each stage of business
    • The pros and cons of each stage of business
    • The importance of supervision in your growth as a dietitian
