Ep 129 | The Jetsons: "A Visit from Grandpa"
The holidays are over, which means Boob Tube Hot Potato is back! Spencer tasked Van with covering The Flintstones a few weeks back, and now he's decided Brian's should lead the '60s Hanna Barbera discussion, so it's time for The Jetsons whether anyone likes it or not!

The Jetson family hosts their 110 year-old grandfather/great-grandfather thinking it will be a relaxing visit, but ol' Montague has other plans. Is the ancient scoundrel involved in two romantic entanglements at the same time, or will he be arrested before any of that matters? The BTBs have plenty to say about this particularly wild senior, forgotten Hanna Barbera characters, and a whole lot more!

S04E28: Voyager 2's Silence, Lunar Mining Prospects, and a Birthday Tribute to George Jetson

S04E28: Voyager 2's Silence, Lunar Mining Prospects, and a Birthday Tribute to George Jetson
Welcome to another episode of the Astronomy Daily Podcast with your host, Steve Dunkley, and the AI assistant, Hallie. In this episode, we chat about meteor showers, a historical event involving the lunar roving vehicle, and the current state of space exploration. Here's what we covered:
    - We start off with a casual conversation about current meteor showers. Steve shares his disappointment in not being able to spot the meteors due to cloud cover in his area.
    - Our fun fact of the day looks back to July 31, 1971, when the lunar roving vehicle was first used on the moon during the Apollo 15 mission by astronauts James B. Irwin and David Scott.
    - We move on to a concerning update about NASA's Voyager 2, which has temporarily lost contact with Earth due to an accidental deviation of the antenna's alignment. Despite this, Voyager 2 continues along its planned trajectory, with the next automatic antenna reset scheduled for October 15th.
    - We discuss the promising future of lunar mining, exploring how private firms and international space agencies plan to extract resources like oxygen, water, and other materials from the moon to support life and build infrastructure.
    - The construction of a new spaceport in Scotland has been temporarily halted due to the discovery of archaeological findings at the building site, including shiny quartz, giant granite stones, and evidence of cremations from the Bronze Age.
    - For our science fiction fans, we look at upcoming space missions including the x-ray imaging and spectroscopy mission "Chrism" scheduled for launch from Japan's Tanegashima Space Center and the European Space Agency's "Platoh" mission set to launch in 2026, aiming to find Earth-like planets.
    - Steve wraps up the episode with a fun surprise story for fans of the 1960s cartoon "The Jetsons," discussing a meme that suggests George Jetson's birthday would be July 31, 2022.
Join us again on Friday with Tim in Bath, England, and catch up with Steve and Hallie again on Monday for more Astronomy Daily.

18 | Part Two: We, for one, welcome our Robot Overlords

Richard and Dave conclude their investigation into the role robots and androids play, and have played, in popular culture. As literature and movies progressed, fascinating and troubling issues about the morality and ethics of creating synthetic life emerged. Meanwhile, tech entrepreneurs traffic in the business of fully equipped synthetic companions. Ew.

17 | Part One: We, for one, welcome our Robot Overlords

Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics
    The First Law:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
The Second Law: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
The Third Law: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Richard and Dave take a look at the appearances of robots, androids, and cyborgs in popular culture and ask themselves the six million dollar question: Are they more likely to help us, or eat our lunch? Dave fulminates about unconscionable profit margins.

    What we’re Enjoying

Thank you for Enjoying Stuff. Thank you very much! Shua is sporting some sideburns and rhinestones after experiencing Baz Luhrman’s movie, Elvis. It was a wild (and pretty accurate) depiction of the King’s life. Jay got to relive the days of dropping quarters at the Retrocade in Asheville, North Carolina. A two level trip back in time to the arcades of old.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout

Be sure to check out Jay’s articles on Retrozap.com. Ghost in the Shell is a classic example of Anime and great storytelling. Jay examines the classic tale on Sci-Fi Saturdays.  And don’t forget his articles on MCULocationScout.com for some great, interactive maps of filming locations.

    Enjoy Life!

As we get older, we start to look back on the stuff we’ve always wanted to do. Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson taught everyone that this is called your bucket list. On Shua’s birthday, he has decided to share some of his bucket list items. He considers himself very fortunate to have accomplished a lot of his goals in life.

After reflecting on the wonders of life, it’s time for a little fun and games. Aleaks Jay-Beck leads Shua through a board of categories and questions on a game of Gyp-Parody.

The categories are At the Movies, Prime Time, A Pocket Full of Quarters, and TechnoRetro Dads History.  Play along and see how many Shua-Bucks you can win!

What’s on your bucket list? Did you do well at our version of Jeopardy? Are you reading all the show notes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Daily Double!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. The Jetson Transport Tube Thingies

    The Jetson Transport Tube Thingies

In this episode, Shakin Shaner is joined by four expert panelists to debate the complex issue of the Jetson Transport Tube Thingies: Why don't we have them and who dropped the ball.  Apparently companies in the 1960s were working on the technology to transport humans in pneumatic tubes just like in the Jetsons. However, we never got the technology so Shakin Shaner and Lisa, Ashleigh, Jim and Randy join him to debate the reasons why!  This....you don't wanna miss!
