Can Civility Be Restored? A Conversation with Dr. Russell Moore - Pt 1

Can Civility Be Restored? A Conversation with Dr. Russell Moore - Pt 1

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation these days wondering, “am I crazy?”  Or, “how do I have conversations with friends & family with whom I disagree politically?”  We asked Dr. Russell Moore these questions as well as what it means to be an evangelical Christian in a post-truth world.  Will civility ever be restored?  Dr. Moore is the former head of Ethics and Religion for the Southern Baptist Convention (and he tells us why he left), and is now a public theologian for Christianity Today.  We had to break up the conversation into two parts because it was all so good that we couldn’t cut it down to a one hour episode.  We don’t come from the same place or see all things the same way, which was what made this conversation so special.  Hope you enjoy Part 1 of our conversation with @russellmoore

Listen To Your Crazy Ideas with Dan Bremnes

Listen To Your Crazy Ideas with Dan Bremnes

The pandemic has taken alot from all of us.  One thing we are just barely recovering is our ability to see possibility, and to dream again. Dan Bremnes - musician, family man, risk-taker, dreamer - reminds us that we need to listen to our crazy ideas because they just might unlock our next step to a life lived, not just tolerated. Dan shares the story behind his new single “Run Away With Me,” https://open.spotify.com/track/1l6gBfmaoPBcRhuZbslIpb?si=kQlrSfPuRb2wJngAhniU5Q which is a real-life example of what can happen we we go after the crazy ideas in our head that we generally disregard as too “out there.”  Hint - it involves a deserted island and an email :)

    And it’s a great song:)

We hope this episode inspires you to walk towards your next step!

When The Bible Feels Too Scary To Read To Your Kids

When The Bible Feels Too Scary To Read To Your Kids

Welcome back to the podcast!  We took a break this summer after our house flooded, thinking we’d start it back up when we were back in, but alas we are still waiting…

The good news is we have a lot to share from this displaced transition season, so we thought we’d embrace it with “Conversations in the Car with Chris and Jodi.”  A little series within the podcast where we literally press record and let you into our chats on the road, and edit nothing (sorry for the road noise)!  Jodi and I both just read “The Bible Tells Me So” by Peter Enns, and it’s helped us feel ok with our questions about the Bible.  Whether it be genocide in the Old Testament, and wrestling with the commandment, “thou shalt not kill,” while God seems to order the killing of women & children & entire people groups, or all the Levitical laws that don’t seem to apply anymore, there’s a lot that makes us uncomfortable.  It hit us while we were reading Bible stories to our kids, that there is a lot that is too R-rated for them to handle.  It left us with a lot of questions, and in case you are in the same boat, we wanted to give you permission to journey with us.  This episode provides more process and questions than answers, but there will be follow up episodes where we dig deeper into these questions.  Wanted to be honest about the where we’re at, so come along for the ride!

Why Wilderness Seasons Aren’t All Bad

Why Wilderness Seasons Aren’t All Bad
I’m not sure about you, but wilderness seasons are never something I pray for. It’s just not that much fun being in a season where you lack clarity & purpose, and when you don’t know what’s next. But here’s the good news: Jesus and John the Baptist wandered in the wilderness, so it can’t be all bad! There has to be a deeper purpose to it, and a way to wander well even on our worst days. This realization has helped me so much in a season full of “I don’t know.” Living as wanderers during this flooded-house chapter of life is teaching me a lot, and I wanted to pass along some practical steps that help me show up to my life and keep going even on my worst day. A few of the steps I talk about are: identify what helps you feel put together; tell yourself, “this is hard and that’s ok. I’m normal for finding this hard;” decide who is welcome to wander with you, and lean into God’s surprises and provision. Your worth is not determined by how well your life is going! You are worthy and loved and welcome to be in your wilderness season. Hope this helps you as you wander… P.S. - We wanted to share a quick update about our house. We have felt so supported by all of you and are blown away by your generosity. We’ve decided to elevate our house eight feet and make it flood-proof. This is an expensive endeavor but it will allow us to move back in and sleep at night. The total cost will be approximately $60,000 (including new foundation, elevating, engineer, surveyor, contractor, etc). Any gift is appreciated, we literally couldn’t do this without you. You have been our lifeline. Jasmine Murray is the kind of influencer you want to follow.  American Idol top-13 finalist, Miss Mississippi and top 10 Miss America, she’s had to deal with how to be her authentic self while still stepping on stage and trying to impress.  Not scared to admit when she can barely get out of bed, or how good it feels to have pushed through a workout she didn’t feel like doing.  Honest about her anxiety and depression, as well as her love for fashion, she lives it all with Christ at the center.  We had a good ol’ girl chat about all the things!  Hope you enjoy this conversation with singer/influencer/powerhouse woman, Jasmine Murray!  Follow her @jasminemurrayofficial

Grief Looks All Sorts Of Ways

Grief Looks All Sorts Of Ways

It hit me while we were jumping on the trampoline in the backyard of our broken house, and then out of the blue while I was making pizza in my friends kitchen, missing my own. We don’t like to give ourselves space to grieve. We like it to happen on a certain day in a certain way, so we can control it and look “strong”. But the truth is, the happiest moments are often when the sadness hits out of nowhere. Maybe you’re in a grieving season, and you feel the need to be strong and get through. Giving yourself permission to grieve IS strong.

So I'm giving myself and giving you permission to grieve in your own way, day to day, however it shows up. Like my friend Jenny said to me on the phone, “it takes energy to push it down and it takes energy to feel it, so either way it’s gonna suck! Thanks for your honest words friend. I needed to hear them. Maybe you do too.

P.S. - We wanted to share a quick update about our house. It’s been a hard two weeks of grieving and dealing with big decisions about our house. How To Live A Deeply Formed Life with Rich Villodas

How To Live A Deeply Formed Life with Rich Villodas

We found Rich Villodas and his church, New Life Fellowship, online the Sunday after the Capitol insurrection.  We were confused and wrestling with the church’s response or lack thereof, to this evil act.  Rich’s sermon that Sunday assured us that there is no way to separate justice and mercy from the gospel, and that becoming a Christian means we have to deal with our stuff, not just pass it off to the Lord and peace out.

Rich’s new book, “The Deeply Formed Life” gives us five transformative values to help us live rooted in these crazy times.  “God is not interested in transforming some parts of us and leaving the rest untouched.  He is not interested in separating our lives into sacred and not sacred categories, or reducing our faith to a personal decision that merely punches a ticket to heaven.”  We’re not sure if we’ve ever read a book that married internal growth and the gospel so well.  If this resonates with you, and you’ve been looking for permission to rethink what living a gospel life actually looks like, this podcast episode will both encourage you and rock your world. Get your pens out!

How To Not Care What People Think And Still Care About People

How To Not Care What People Think And Still Care About People

    Hi Friends,

It’s so easy to write people off, isn’t it?  When they don’t see things the way we do, vote the way we do, belong to the same group we do… But here’s the thing:  it's in the sharing of our stories, leaning in to listen and learn, NOT winning someone over to our side, that we grow!  When we posted about the insurrection at the Capitol and the inauguration, we watched as our social media number plummeted.  All of a sudden people assumed so much about who we are and what we believe.  At first we wondered if we did something wrong… but it led to beautiful, complicated conversations that we would never have had otherwise!

So this week’s podcast episode asks & attempts to answer this question: how do we not care what people think, but still care about people?  Wow - that’s tough, isn’t it?  To show up and share your perspective in love, AND leave space for others to do the same is not easy, but it’s necessary.  We are equal parts nervous & excited about being more transparent, and engaging in vulnerable conversations as we move into 2021.  We want to let you in to our questions & the things we’re working through, and we trust that if you’re here on the journey with us, you want to join in the conversation and do the same!  Our prayer is that even in conflict, we could be loving towards each other.  If we make our point but lose the plot of loving God & people, we’ve lost everything.  We love you and we’re so glad you’re here!

PS - we are launching a PATREON!  Never heard of it?  It's the ultimate L&TO insiders’ subscription, a chance to get unreleased songs, conversations, and devotionals delivered to you personally every month!  We will even do a Worship Wednesday exclusive just for Patreon members and pray for you all individually.  We are excited about going deeper with you, and we hope you’ll join us!  Patreon launches Feb. 1st!  Stay tuned for more info :)

How To Dream When You Can’t Plan

How To Dream When You Can’t Plan

We had a 2021 “planning meeting” today and it was weird! How do you plan during a pandemic when your industry is shut down? Maybe you’re not facing the same challenges that we are as touring musicians who can’t tour, but I’m sure you’re feeling this tension in your life, too. The inability to put dates on a calendar, or see our families…maybe you’ve given up on dreaming?

This week’s podcast is all about dreaming even when you can’t plan or see what’s ahead; how to not let last year’s disappointments steal your anticipation for what God has for you in 2021.

We pray that these little tips are transformational in your life, and the way you approach this year.

And if you’re looking for a way to give (and get a tax receipt) this year, head to www.lovehealinghugs.comand pay for a child living in poverty to have a life changing surgery this year.  $360 dollars ($1 a day) or $30 a month will sponsor a surgery for a little one who can’t afford it.  Send a healing hug this year!

Love to you friends, keep dreaming!

    Overwhelmed? Start Here.

    Overwhelmed? Start Here.

I woke up this morning feeling heavy-hearted, overwhelmed, and an overall lack of clarity & focus.  We are all balancing a lot these days, and the holidays are a magical time, but they add another layer to everything don’t they?  Here’s the thing - even in our over-whelm we still need to get up and function to take care of ourselves & our families.  I don’t have all the answers, but God does, and He definitely met me in the middle of it all and helped me through.  Here’s some tangible ways to feel and fight through overwhelm... and it all starts with His love.  I hope you find this helpful, love to hear your thoughts!

How To Give Thanks In The Midst Of Sadness

How To Give Thanks In The Midst Of Sadness

This Thanksgiving is so different for all of us.  We can’t get across the border to see family and eat turkey, and many of you are staying home and staying safe as well.  In the midst of it all, we have been feeling sad, lost, overwhelmed and exhausted, and a little ashamed for feeling that way.  As Christians aren’t we supposed to just push through and “be thankful?”  In this week’s podcast episode we talk about just that - how being thankful isn’t turning a blind eye to our pain and sadness, but knowing he is right there with us in the midst of it.  It is ok to feel both - sad and thankful.

Jesus himself said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” so He was giving us permission to feel down.  But scripture also reminds us that we don’t mourn as those who have no hope, and “the joy of the Lord is our strength”.  The only way Chris and I know of, to resiliently find hope in the midst of a challenging 2020, is to develop our gratitude muscle.  Gratitude leads to joy, which leads to strength.  We hope you find this episode both honest and encouraging as we let you into our lives.  You are not alone!  Wishing you all a meaningful and memorable Thanksgiving!

How To Live Your Calling In Crisis

We’re back!! We haven’t played a live show in seven months, but we’re learning that our calling hasn’t changed, just the way we do it. We spent this episode sharing the steps we’re taking to stay hopeful and sane and productive during this season, and how protecting our kids from everything is not our aim as parents. You gotta listen to the episode to get our thoughts on cancel culture and we’d love to hear your thoughts too! Oh yeah, and it’s Chris’ b-day!! The Heart Of Purpose with Desiree Siegfried

The Heart Of Purpose with Desiree Siegfried

We are so excited for this week’s podcast episode with Desiree Siegfried!  I got to zoom chat with her back in April, just as COVID-19 was getting crazy and we were a few weeks into quarantine. You may know her as ‘The Bachelorette’ from Season 9, where she shared her life with the world on national television... but lots has happened since then!  As a young woman searching for love while also searching for herself, and now as a momma of two boys and wife to the man she met on ‘The Bachelorette,’ Desiree opens up about her experience on reality TV, finding her identity in Christ, and why people-pleasing never works.  So pull up a chair and listen to Desiree’s story,  I know her faith journey is really going to encourage you!  Make sure and check out her podcast ‘Heart of Purpose’ and follow along with her on IG @desireesiegfried

Saints: Discovering Your True Identity with Addison Bevere

How is your day going?  Chris and I hit the beach with the boys for a few days last week, and it was a refreshing change of scenery for us.  We had a chance to read and play and hang out together and it was just what we needed!  One of the books we read on our two-day getaway is Addison Bevere’s  Saints: Becoming More Than "Christians”.  I gotta admit, the title had us a bit stumped, but the message within explained and inspired us so much that we decided to have him on the podcast!

Addison (son of Lisa & John Bevere), believes it is time to become more than just cultural Christians and start seeing and living as the saints that we are.  Did you know that the word ‘Christian’ is only used three times in the New Testament, but the word 'Saint' is used over sixty times?  Paul starts almost every letter ’To the saints…’ and that’s you and me!  "Saints is not just a name for dead people, it is meant to be our new identity that shapes our destiny.  Saints are people who break down barriers between the secular and the sacred, and people who see the intersection of faith in everyday life".

We can’t wait for you guys to hear this podcast and let it reframe the way you see yourself.  We pray this message will equip you to see and live boldly as your saintly identity sinks in.

How To Love Your Neighbor with Danielle Coke

We did something we’ve never done before - a live instagram chat with Danielle Coke, and turned it into a podcast!!  You have probably seen and been affected by her amazing artwork, and if you haven’t, go check out her page @ohhappydani.  She is a designer-turned-illustrator from Georgia, with a heart for justice and a love for Jesus and people.  Dani opened up about the micro-aggression she’s faced, for example; “You’re pretty for a black girl” or “is that your real hair?” -these are not things I’ve had to deal with before... We found this conversation so enlightening and life giving and we hope you do too.  Our prayer is that this conversation would help you see, hear and love your neighbor as yourself and that your awareness would lead you to action.
