103 - Ben Crenshaw on the Impotence of Liberalism

In this conversation with Ben Crenshaw, we cover the topic of liberalism. Many people today consider liberalism a doomed project. While people still love freedom, we often fail to account for the importance of virtue. In order to understand liberalism, we need to discover what gave rise to the liberal project. Ben shares a historical overview of liberalism to help us better understand it. We also discuss modern egalitarianism under the liberal scheme and friends and enemies in light of biblical teaching.

Professor Andrew Koppelman: “Burning Down the House: How Libertarian Philosophy Was Corrupted by Delusion and Greed.”

Professor Andrew Koppelman, a John Paul Stevens Professor of Law at Northwestern University, is the author of “Burning Down the House: How Libertarian Philosophy Was Corrupted by Delusion and Greed.” Libertarianism has deteriorated into a more doctrinaire form as espoused by Ayn Rand or Charles Koch. President Franklin Roosevelt dealt with a stock market collapse, bank failures and high unemployment which are some of the reasons for establishing a social safety net, such as Social Security. Libertarianism argues that people should be unencumbered, and shrinking the size of government and giving tax cuts will be beneficial. The climate crisis and Covid pandemic have proven these concepts inaccurate. Joe Biden has a coherent belief in both a free market and a governmental apparatus to help when the market fails. Donald Trump does not have a fixed philosophy but wants to assist his business colleagues, even if it endangers employees and the public. A balance should be reached between individual freedom and government overreach.

S4 E14: John Locke and Revolution

John Locke may just be our favorite political theorist yet! Join us as we cover Locke's political theories, including the peaceful state of nature, religious toleration, and the idea of a very limited government. We discuss in detail our natural rights, how moral foundations are important for any society, when one can engage in a revolution, and whether modern liberal democracies are doomed to fail with the loss of belief in God. John Locke, Philosoph (Geburtstag, 29.08.1632)

    John Locke, Philosoph (Geburtstag, 29.08.1632)

    O głupocie z Johnem Locke'iem | PF 65

    O głupocie z Johnem Locke'iem | PF 65

Zapraszamy na odcinek, w którym próbujemy niejako wspak odczytać Rozważania dotyczące rozumu ludzkiego Johna Locke’a i odnaleźć w nich opisy różnych przejawów ludzkiej głupoty, tępoty i szaleństwa.

Odcinek ilustruje przypisywany Hieronimowi Boschowi obraz Leczenie głupoty albo Wycinanie kamienia głupoty z okresu po 1494, obecnie w Muzeum Prado w Madrycie.

    Libertarianism

    Libertarianism

Libertarianism is a political philosophy based on John Locke's philosophy of natural law, that each is entitled to freedom for oneself and ones property and society should require minimal intervention by government. It is closely associated with individualism but its origins can be traced to ancient China. We explore contemporary principles of libertarianism and offer a brief critical reflection on what is seems to be missing.
