Jesse Hawken, host of Junk Filter Podcast, returns to the show to discuss 'Primal Fear'. The film is a taut piece of middlebrow entertainment which offers maximum reward as a cable classic.

We discuss the film's two standout performances - one from aging handsome guy Richard Gere as a hotshot attorney looking for his next big break, the other from then-newcomer Edward Norton who took audiences by storm and wound up on the short list of actors nominate for an Academy Award for their very first film performance. Then, we talk the movie's famous twist ending, and the way that it betrays an uncomfortably reactionary streak that resonated with audiences in mid-90s America. Finally, we have some words about the death of the midbudget cable classic, and look at the current state of the industry vis-a-vis the tandem strike efforts from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

In this conversation Mike discusses his fascinating personal and professional life - from 1920's Chicago, to WWII, to his life as an exterminator, and his extraordinary acting career. As of this writing, Mike can still be seen onstage with his close friend BJ Jones in readings of Pilot's Lounge. A play written especially for Mike by his friend, Pulitzer and Tony winning playwright David Mamet.

Do Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke’s characters actually deserve each other because they both suck so much? And should we feel bad for Ben Stiller or relieved that he totally dodged a bullet there? Could we just watch Steve Zahn be adorable and Janeane Garofalo in her perfect vintage outfits instead? And can we directly blame all the shitty behavior and toxic relationships during our 20s on this movie? We’ll let you know as soon as we stop listening to Lisa Loeb on loop.

Within 10 minutes of watching this film I could quote it by heart. It has been at least 10 years since I've seen it and it still has the same effect all these years later. What a refreshing film filled with heartwarming friendships, broken hearts, and one of the best ensemble casts! 

Me and Mikey are massive fans and talk our many favorite euphemisms, THAT Jennifer Coolidge cameo, and we play an interesting gam of "Who would you kick out of bed?"
