    Enjoy Stuff: Oh Canada!

    Enjoy Stuff: Oh Canada!

It's time to celebrate Canada Day! July 1 marks a big, national celebration for our neighbors to the north, so Jay and Shua remind us 'mericans about some famous celebrities who have called Canada their home and share some interesting facts along the way. It's time to Enjoy Stuff, eh!

Oh, Canada! We love our upstairs neighbors but sometimes we tend to have the wrong ideas about the second largest nation. Hopefully the boys can clear up a few misconceptions about a beautiful country with some rich history.

    What we’re Enjoying

This week Shua completed his summer chores while lazy book reading The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece: a Novel by Tom Hanks. It’s a unique take on how a movie gets made, with stories of the origins of characters decades before to the fictional background of how characters got involved in the movie business. Jay is enjoying the most recent season of the Netflix hit Black Mirror. It’s a collection of wild, unexpected stories that will keep you guessing and talking.

    MCU Location Scout

Jay is back at work scouting MCU filming locations. This time he’s focusing on the newest Disney+ series Marvel’s Secret Invasion. An espionage series set in places all over the world is the perfect opportunity for you to explore Jay’s interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. And don’t forget to tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua breakdown each episode of the series.

    Enjoy Canada!

Because Canada is celebrating a national holiday this week, Enjoy Stuff wanted to show our support and friendship by sharing just how dumb Americans are when it comes to the people right next to us. We share a variety of fact about the illustrious country and a little bit of history (that is probably true, if we can trust the internet) And we talk about just a handful of the many public figures that are easily recognized by Americans, who are usually completely unaware that they came from Canada.

And you can check out a classic TechnoRetro Dads episode where we discuss a Canadian comedy featuring our favorite hosers, Bob and Doug McKenzie (featuring the Cereal Connoisseur, Sheldon!)

Do you know of more famous Canadians? Are you a Canadian? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Meet me at Tim Hortons” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

    Splash (1984)

    Splash (1984)

What do you get the mermaid fanatic who has everything? Might we suggest Dick Ebert discussing the sex lives of cryptids and Gene drooling over Daryl Hannah? It's 1984's "Splash!"

In this episode celebrating listener Stephanie Q's birthday, the Shat Crew praises one of the few '80s slow-motion scenes that works, applauds surprisingly well-developed characters, and worries about how long Tom Hanks would survive under the sea.

"Splash" was Touchstone Pictures' first release, allowing Disney to flex some of its adult muscles, and we're grateful. It gave us the chance to talk about The King Bee ghosting Gene on their movie date, Eugene Levy typifying the incels of the '80s, and "The Boys" venturing into utterly unwatchable territory. Through it all, we witnessed a terrific protagonist in Allen Bauer, who had his priorities straight and dove headlong into love.

    Stripes (1981)

    Stripes (1981)

"Stripes" surfaced some pretty great Army stories from Big D— including the joy's of kitchen duty, henpecked drill sergeants, incompetent officers and what it means to be a Five-Jump Chump—while giving us a glimpse of '80s comedy giants in their prime.

Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, John Candy, Judge Reinhold, John Larroquette, Sean Young and even Bill Paxton (blink and you'll miss him) brought their youth and talent to this classic war comedy that served up boobs by the dozen.

In this episode, Dick and Gene shred Chevy Chase, offer strip-club advice, champion the underrated EM-50 urban assault vehicle, compare the sex toys of the '80s to our modern arsenal and debate whether "Stripes" should have been split into two movies.

The Shat Crew also fields a voicemail seeking justice for Jean-Claude Van Damme's reputation as a lover. And Big D discovers he has a writing job waiting for him at Marvel Studios.

    Heavy Metal (1981)

    Heavy Metal (1981)

Well, we finally watched it: animated cult classic Heavy Metal (1981). Although none of us are really pleased with ourselves, we like to think that we got something out of it. Something important. Like we put our finger on the pulse of a dying god and felt with our own flesh its final expiration. Ultimate evil is expunged. The universe is safe.

"Earth women who experience sexual ecstasy with mechanical assistance always tend to feel guilty."

    Planes, Trains and Automobiles

    Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Happy Holidays from Reels and Wheels! For this episode, Sid & James get into the holiday season with Planes Trains & Automobiles - a John Hughes classic about the worst attempt at holiday travel ever.

This movie definitely delivers in the "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" department, with a glorious assortment of malais-era cars, but it's also an excellent movie that rises above comedy by creating two deep, relatable characters.

Plus we have a who's who of 1980's background character actors and an unlikely Star Trek actor cameo. Send us your feedback, @ReelsandWheels!

    Uncle Buck (1989)

    Uncle Buck (1989)

Brothers and prolific Shat The Movies commissioners Josh, Adam and Jon R. have always been there for us. When a shooter attacked their beloved Highland Park on July 4, it was our duty and honor to be there for them. Thanks to some very generous Shat listeners, this recording raised $1000 for the shooting response fund.

In this special live episode, the Shat Crew celebrates the 1989 love letter to Highland Park and Chicagoland as a whole: “Uncle Buck.” One of John Hughes’ lesser-known films, this John Candy comedy gave us Macaulay Culkin before his breakthrough role in “Home Alone.” It also touched Big D’s heart as a father and sexually confused a young Gene Lyons.

As always, we dive into unexpected topics like fat shaming, menacing comedians, ‘80s montages, and missed opportunities with clowns.

1986 - Little Shop of Horrors

1986 - Little Shop of Horrors
"Feed me, Seymour!" On this episode of our 1986 series, Scott Hoffman joins Jeff for a garden variety conversation about Little Shop of Horrors that is sure to knock your stalks off (two puns in the first sentence?)! Scott provides a rich history about the property, from stage to screen to remake! Connections to Batman, the puppetry of Martin P. Robinson, great options for the Nintendo faceoff, and music that makes you want to turnip the volume (okay, that was the last pun) are among the topics that bloom (okay, but really that was the last pun) on this episode!

And for more on Martin P. Robinson, check out the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry's "Little Shop of Horrors" forum at the following link https://www.facebook.com/BallardInstitute/videos/273676570307412/

    Nothing But Trouble (1991)

    Nothing But Trouble (1991)
What happens when you give a comedic acting and writing superstar 40 million dollars and little oversight to direct his first movie that he wrote and is also playing multiple roles in?
Apparently, Warner Brothers also wanted the answer to this question.
What they got was the tale of a skeezy and mostly unlikable socialite, a beautiful lawyer, Brazillionaires, a 106 year old vengeance seeking justice of the peace, giant mutant babies, Mr. Bonestripper, and John Candy in drag!
So jump onboard, strap in and keep your hands and arms inside the ride at all times!

    Brewster's Millions (1985)

    Brewster's Millions (1985)

Listener Teddy N. noticed a Richard Pryor-shaped hole in the Shat The Movies library and decided to plug it with an underappreciated classic: "Brewster's Millions."

In this episode, we remember a comedic genius in his prime with a knockout supporting cast. We also find out why Big D hates the Mets, who would play a $30 million Shat on Music Festival, and which Mortal Kombat movie is superior.

Along the way, we also quote Mase, celebrate a spicy John Candy, feed Big D all the rules he can stomach, hear voicemail from Hot Sauce Steve and Don Sauce, and read an "Interview with the Vampire" letter that touched our eternally damned souls.
