Alcohol and Police Trauma Took Him To The Edge.

Alcohol and Police Trauma Took Him To The Edge. The Perils of Police Trauma and Alcohol: A Journey from Despair to Hope. The weight of police trauma, coupled with alcohol abuse, pushed him to the brink of despair, ultimately leading to a suicide attempt. This harrowing ordeal marked the end of his law enforcement career and left his overall mental health in shambles. Today, he shares his story of loss and resilience, aiming to offer hope and support to others.

Meet our guest, Richard Odom, a retired law enforcement officer with 17 years of dedicated service. As he delves into the challenges and rewards of his career in law enforcement, it becomes evident that the traumas he encountered and witnessed profoundly affected him. In an attempt to cope with the mental and emotional toll of the job, he turned to alcohol, setting the stage for a perilous downward spiral that ultimately culminated in a suicide attempt.

Alcohol and Police Trauma Took Him To The Edge. Richard co-authored the book "Living Inside the Thin Blue Line: The Oath Breaker" and has since launched a website and service dedicated to assisting fellow officers under the banner of "Thin Blue Connect." Through his journey, he seeks to shine a light on the issues of police trauma, mental health, and addiction, offering a lifeline of connection, hope, and recovery to those who face similar struggles.

059 - That Dog Relies on You: Ryan Sumner, K-9 Handler, Part 1

Today I'm checking off another item from my podcast bucket list by interviewing a K-9 handler.  My guest today is Ryan Sumner from the Lenexa (KS) Police Department and he has been a K-9 handler for most of his twenty year as a cop, finding drugs, tracking and apprehending bad guys, as well as training other handlers and their dogs.

Ryan came highly recommended as a subject expert here in the Kansas City area and I had a great conversation with him, which I'm going to split into two parts.  This first half will cover how he got started and the pros and cons of K-9 work you need to know before you commit to this career track.
