This week, we veer from Marissa's usual fare and talk about an interesting case of anthropology in film and how Jeff Bridges studied birds to play an alien, and it's awesome.

    Scrooged

    Scrooged

We're revisiting Charles Dickens' immortal classic as warped through the comic sensibilities of Bill Murray as we watch Richard Donner's 1988 Christmas hit Scrooged. Listen as we discuss Murray's manic take on the miserly main character, consider the implications of updating A Christmas Carol to the Reagan years, and swoon over Carol Kane's adorably violent performance as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Warning: Contains explicit language, spoilers, and chronologically-disordered viewings of Iron Man 2.

Scrooged Part 1: Writers, Script, Bill Murray and Richard Donner

"I get it. You're taking me back in time to show me my mother and father, and I'm supposed to get all goosey and blubbery. Well forget it, pal, you got the wrong guy!"

Today we discover that Scrooged was the product of a script by an experimental comedian and a Playboy journalist. We also find out that Bill Murray was nervous to take on the role after a 4 year break and how Richard Donner decided to take on his first comedy

    Scrooged (1988) - Movie Review - Episode 199

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here. Even though 2020 has done a number on all of us, we here at The Cinema Psychos Show refuse to let it take away our celebration of odd ball holiday classics. And no movie is more odd ball enough than the 1988 Bill Murray classic, SCROOGED. A film that marked the return of Murray into a leading comedic role (we'll ignore that Little Shop of Horrors cameo), Scrooged retells the classic Charles Dicken's story, "A Christmas Carol" through a modern parody that touches on everything from late 1980's obsession over television, income inequality, and a nihilistic view of Christmas. And oh yea it's all wrapped up in a wacky Bill Murray SNL sketch that you either love or hate. So grab your top of the line IBC towel and sit back as we dive into the xmas classic, SCROOGED.

    'Starman' (featuring JC Screen Fix)

    'Starman' (featuring JC Screen Fix)

What comes to mind when you think of John Carpenter? Most people probably go straight to classic horror films like Halloween or The Thing. Or perhaps cult sci-fi thrillers such as Escape from New York and They Live. The point is, we're willing to bet few would think Carpenter had a romantic sci-fi drama in him. And yet Starman exists.

Starring Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen -- who we just covered in our Raiders of the Lost Ark episode -- the 1984 release barely broke even at the box office. Yet, it remains critically beloved and, according to this episode's guest, the ultimate comfort movie during the insanity that is 2020.

JC of Screen Fix joins us to discuss why Starman is a forgotten gem of the 1980s. We'll get into where the unlikely film fits in Carpenter's career, the chemistry between Bridges and Allen, and -- of course -- why Starman shines so very bright in today's world.

So join us as we hitch our crooked wagon to Carpenter's Starman.

    SYNOPSIS

Answering a NASA message intended, an alien tries to contact mankind, but an American missile grounds his ship. Scrambling, the so-called Starman (Jeff Bridges) inhabits the body of a late Wisconsinite and kidnaps the dead man's widow, Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). Determined to reunite with a vessel from his home planet at a predetermined site, Starman and Jenny travel to Arizona. Pursued by military officials trying to kill him, Starman forges a lasting bond with Jenny.

    Fixing the Crystal Skull

    Fixing the Crystal Skull

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 525

This episode we try to see if it's possible to - fix the Crystal Skull. The fourth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise has frustrated fans since it's initial release. So we start with our on-going recasting question... could something as simple as recasting the role of Mutt Williams save this movie? But then we start to ask even bigger questions like... what if Indy and Marion had a daughter? And what if we remove the alien plot completely? Would fans have been happy? And what artifact would Indy be looking for? Listen as we try to figure out - just what it would take to fix the Crystal Skull!

And while we wish we were climbing around in a tomb, we also mention… Marvel Comics, a CG monkey, Karen Allen, Area 51, cracking open the plastic, The History Channel, The Chronicles of Narnia, David Childress, creating the story arc, Stranger Things, Shia LaBeouf, Hitler, grabbing a snake, memorable and interesting, Lara Croft, Harrison Ford, Taken, recasting, animated series, Solo, Sallah, archaeology, an extra level of research, George Lucas, passing the torch, socs vs. greasers, John Hurt, Forrest Gump, stunt casting, Horizon Zero Dawn, all kinds of Jesus, from a divided household, Cate Blanchett, quotable lines, Marcus, the Bond franchise, Michael Bay, campy things, Steven Spielberg, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, It, the object of desire, nuking the fridge, The Teen Choice Awards and Project MKUltra.

“There’s elements there that are true throughout the other three movies, so what is it about this one that almost across the board people are like… I hate that movie!”

KYD 071 - Raiders of the Lost Ark

KYD 071 - Raiders of the Lost Ark

Cue the John Williams music, because this month we are finally tapping into one of the most beloved 80s adventure franchises!  No, not THAT one...the OTHER George Lucas franchise: INDIANA JONES!

Now, as the internet informs us, the original title for this movie was just Raiders of the Lost Ark, but after the success of the franchise, when it was re-released it was then dubbed Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Either way, it's still the story of a supposedly mild-mannered archaeologist who steals artifacts for the museum in his downtime.  Bonafide hunk, Harrison Ford, stars as the titular scientist.  In the first iteration of his adventures, he races against Nazis to obtain the Lost Ark, the ancient vessel that holds the Ten Commandments (yes, THOSE Ten Commandments)!  Along the way, he reunites with old flame, Marion Ravenwood (the always luminous Karen Allen), and pal Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) to prevent the Nazis from getting their hands on one of the most powerful artifacts of all time!

Now, both Dan AND Chrysten remember nothing about this movie, but know they definitely watched it as kids so...this oughta be interesting!  Will this Steven Spielberg adventure live or die?  Join us and find out!  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!
