    Episode 150: The Orchid and the Dandelion; The Science of Sensitive Kids

    Episode 150: The Orchid and the Dandelion; The Science of Sensitive Kids
    Join me for this conversational episode where I chat about the concept of orchid and dandelion children. I spoke about this over on our Instagram page in December 2023 and it resonated with a lot of parents, so I thought I would expand upon it today on the podcast.

    The concept of orchid and dandelion children was created by pediatrician and Professor emeritus of paediatrics and psychiatry, W. Thomas Boyce. Dr Boyce shares that children have two very different responses to their environments. While some children are like dandelions and can thrive in almost any environment, there are others who, like orchids, are much more reactive and susceptible to their surroundings.

    In this episode I will be sharing more about this concept, including:

    • Why some children are much more affected by their circumstances and their environment, compared to others;
    • I share the statistics of how many children are known as dandelion children, what this means, and what personality traits they have;
    • I share how many children identify as orchid children and their personality traits;
    • Plus, how we can support our orchid children.

    Episode 148: What you need to know about parenting teens with Kirsten Cobabe

    This week I'm thrilled to have Kirsten Cobabe on the podcast. I've had the pleasure of chatting with Kirsten before for our membership program, the Natural Super Kids Klub, and it was such an insightful chat on supporting our teens.

Her intentional approach focuses on creating lasting connections through curiosity, presence, authenticity, and awareness. Kirsten supports parents in learning how to listen to and talk with their teens. She engages parents in personal reflection, embracing their new role, cultivating rapport, understanding the teen brain, transforming obstacles, and restoring harmony in the home

    Episode 147: Peaceful Discipline with Sarah. R. Moore

    Episode 147: Peaceful Discipline with Sarah. R. Moore

    In this week's episode of the podcast, I sat down with special guest, Sarah R. Moore, who is the author of Peaceful Discipline: Story Teaching, Brain Science & Better Behavior and founder of Dandelion Seeds Positive Parenting. Sarah is a certified Master Trainer in conscious parenting and a Board Member of the American Society for the Positive Care of Children, she’s also a public speaker, armchair neuroscientist, and most importantly, a Mum/Mom. With training in child development, trauma recovery, interpersonal neurobiology, improv comedy, and play, her work supports parents and caregivers around the globe.

    In this episode, Sarah and I discuss:

    • Why Peaceful Discipline?
    • Why, from a brain science perspective, do so many punishments end up failing or even backfiring;
    • Is peaceful discipline for all kids, or just sensitive ones? What about strong-willed children?
    • Why do we need to be parent-centric in how we approach behavior, rather than trying to modify our children's behavior? What does that look like?
    • What about when peaceful discipline is hard for us? Do we have to parent this way ALL the time?
    • What if parenting this way doesn't come naturally?
    • What is story teaching? Does it work for all ages? What if I'm not creative? When do we use it?

    Episode 141: Exploring the Connection between Fussy Eating, Constipation, and Iron Deficiency in Children

    Episode 141: Exploring the Connection between Fussy Eating, Constipation, and Iron Deficiency in Children

    A common theme we have been seeing in our Natural Super Kids KLUB lately is the number of children dealing with fussy eating, iron deficiency and constipation. So in today's episode I am going to discuss the link between the three.

    In this episode, we will touch on:

    • How it is common for fussy eaters to become iron deficient due to lack of iron-rich foods in the diet, as well as the link to constipation due to lack of dietary fibre.
    • How a lack of dietary fibre can cause gut dysbiosis which contributes to poor appetite, fussy eating, constipation and iron absorbability;
    • The link all three conditions have with the gut and the link between inflammation,  short-chain fatty acids, prebiotics, and probiotics.
    • How iron deficiency can lead to poor appetite;
    • Why iron deficiency isn't just about iron intake, and why we should focus on absorbability.
    • How fussy eating and constipation affect iron absorption;
    • The importance of choosing a well-absorbed iron;
    • Plus so much more.

    Episode 65: Stutter-free Kids with Lauren Brown

    Episode 65: Stutter-free Kids with Lauren Brown

    This week I am thrilled to chat all things stuttering with Lauren Brown from Stutter Free Kids. Lauren is a paediatric speech pathologist, childhood stuttering specialist, and the owner of Stutter Free Kids.

    For over 12 years Lauren has supported families to help their children speak stutter-free using the highly effective Australian stuttering treatment, The Lidcombe Program. Throughout Lauren’s years in practice, she started to notice that the vast majority of children she saw for stuttering, were consistently impacted by their internal and external environment and it was negatively impacting the success of treatment.

    In this episode, Lauren and I chat about:

    • The key things parents need to know about stuttering include the sudden onset of stuttering in the preschool years;
    • Lauren's unique approach to helping children to speak stutter-free;
    • The interesting research on the link between highly sensitive children and stuttering;
    • The importance of looking at stuttering from a holistic perspective and addressing the child's environment and sensory input
    • How the overwhelm from environmental and sensory input can lead to increased stuttering;
    • Lauren shares a helpful acronym to determine whether your child is highly sensitive;
    • Some of the reasons parents want to reach out for support for stuttering including a family history of stuttering, and if stuttering has existed for over 6 months, plus more.

    Episode 62: Three Chemicals Your Kids are Exposed to that are Ruining Their Gut Health

    Episode 62: Three Chemicals Your Kids are Exposed to that are Ruining Their Gut Health

    Unfortunately, our kids are exposed to more chemicals and toxins than ever before and many of these are having a detrimental effect on their microbiome diversity. Having a diverse microbiome is so important for their gut health and general wellbeing, which is why it is important to reduce or avoid the chemicals and toxins that I discuss in this episode.

    These chemicals and toxins can have many different negative implications for our kid's health, but in this episode, we are going to be talking about three specific chemicals and toxins that are causing damage to your kid's gut.

    The three chemicals are:

    • Medications such as antibiotics: Firstly,  we want to make it clear that this doesn't mean you shouldn't be giving your kids these medications because at times they can be beneficial for their health and wellbeing. However, in this episode, I talk about being aware of which medications can be depleting our kid's gut health and how we can assist and rebuild our kid's gut health if and when they have to take medications;

    • Antibacterial chemicals: the use of antibacterial chemicals in cleaning and personal care products has increased significantly since the pandemic. Again, sometimes these products are necessary, but thanks to tricky marketing Mum's believe that if we are not cleaning our houses to be spotless with harsh antibacterial chemicals, we may not be keeping our kids safe. In this episode, I want to bring awareness of why this might not be the case and I discuss two of the specific nasty antibacterial chemicals that you want to avoid;

    • Essential oils: I am a big fan of using essential oils safely, but we need to remember that essential oils come in a very concentrated form that has high antibacterial effects. The high concentration of essential oils can cause damaging effects to our kid's microbiome if ingested internally. I discuss the specific essential oils that are causing issues with the microbiome, why you should never use essential oils internally, and some of the ways you can use essential oils safely.

    I hope you enjoy the podcast.

    Episode 55: Managing Back to School Anxiety in Kids

    Back to school is a common time for kids to experience feelings of anxiety, or excacerbated anxiety. Anxiety is a multi-system response to a perceived threat or danger. It can affect any system in the body, which is why symptoms differ between people. The symptoms can vary, but some of the most common include:

    • A racing heartbeat, palpitations, sweating, breathlessness, dizziness, excess worrying, feeling fatigued or weak, dry mouth, digestive disturbances, and disturbances to sleep patterns.

    In this episode I discuss:

    • Some of the most common causes and risk factors when it comes to anxiety in kids including:
      • Genetic factors such as MTHFR gene mutation;
      • Trauma;

    Episode 53: Packing a Healthy Lunchbox

    Episode 53: Packing a Healthy Lunchbox

    Packing a healthy lunchbox is important because it is a significant percentage of the food our kids eat overall.  If they are missing out on wholesome, nutrient-rich food in their lunch box, their overall nutrition will be suffering - both their macronutrient balance and their micronutrients  (the vitamins and minerals).

    So it is really important that we make an effort to make sure that our kids' lunchboxes contain nutrient-rich foods to:

    • Support sustained energy;
    • Support their mood and behaviour;
    • Support their learning and concentration;
    • Support their immunity and gut health and;
    • Their overall growth and development

    In this episode, I talk about:

    • What is typical in a standard Australian lunchbox (and we give examples), including things like:
      • White bread sandwiches;
      • Packaged food;
      • And, only a little bit of fruit and veggies.
    • The biggest mistake that I see parents make in terms of the food in they are putting in lunchboxes
    • Plus, the first tweak you should think about that will improve the overall nutrition in a lunchbox.

    Episode 42: Tummy Aches in Children - Causes and Natural Solutions

    Episode 42: Tummy Aches in Children - Causes and Natural Solutions

    Tummy aches are a frequent complaint of children and they are one of the most common reasons parents take their kids to the doctor or naturopath. Tummy aches can be a bit confusing to figure out when it comes to kids, as kids often complain of tummy aches when they're generally feeling unwell, or anxious, and nervous or if they're feeling a bit nauseous. It can be broad, and difficult for a kid to express exactly what is going on.

    In this podcast episode, I discuss the common causes of tummy aches in kids, including constipation, food sensitivities, coeliac disease, and much more..

    In this episode I delve into why it's important to do some detective work when your kid has regular tummy aches and to look into things such as:
    > Other symptoms they may be presenting with
    > Their daily bowel habits
    > What's going on with their diet and appetite
    > Your family health history

    I also talk about what you can do as a parent to get on top of your child's tummy aches, including:
    > Why it is important and helpful to keep a diet diary
    > Two specific things we focus on when it comes to our child's diet
    >  The food intolerances and sensitivities to consider
    > Why it's important to focus on building up your child's gut health if they are having regular tummy aches.

    Gut health is the foundation of our kid's wellbeing and if we focus on gut health we can see improvements in our kid's immunity, allergies, eczema, asthma, mood and behaviour, tummy troubles and fussy eating and so much more.
