#148: 5 Mistakes I Have Made Working With Autistic Students

#148: 5 Mistakes I Have Made Working With Autistic Students

As an SLP - BCBA working in the field for the last two decades, I have certainly made mistakes and learned along the way. Today I am sharing my top 5 mistakes and what I would do differently. Because when we know better, we do better.

    1. Yes/No Questions – working on this too early is not productive; it is important but requires a much higher level language!
    2. Not setting specific goals on Joint Attention - Good providers have these opportunities naturally, but it's necessary to set specific goals and specific focus using the three-part framework - Books, Music, and Play!
    3. JARGON - using too much professional jargon is not the right move unless you’re talking to ONLY other members of your profession. Ethically, you need to use words that are understandable by all!
    4. The term “Red Flags” - in reference to autism “Red Flags” have a negative connotation. Use language that supports your learners; try language like “Signs” or “Characteristics”.
    5. Eye Contact as a goal - while eye contact can be a helpful skill, it's not directly important to communication and will often be a natural by-product of focusing on joint attention.

In a world where 1 in 36 individuals has autism, we have to be striving to support autistic learners in every way we can.

Spring Cleaning Time! | HEALTH BENEFITS of Reducing The CHEMICALS And TOXINS In Your Home | GOING LOW-TOX With Elyse Rooney

What kind of toxic burden is your body trying to carry and clear? Think you aren't affected by all of the toxins that surround us every day - an increasing amount - Well my guest Elyse Rooney wants to know how you are sleeping? Are you sicker more than usual? How are your periods and PMS symptoms? Do you have skin issues?

If you answered yes, then you may be dealing with a heavier than usual toxic load that your body is working hard to clear. It is working so hard that it has had to put a lot of other things on the back burner.

If you want your body to function better, then you need to consider doing a home detox, going low-tox in some of your cleaning and personal care items. And what better time to do that than this spring as we are all looking to clean our homes and freshen them up for the summer.

Elyse is the facilitator of the Home Detox Method where she goes through each room and what you could do and what you should do to lessen the amount of toxins and chemicals being used in that room. You will learn what to look for on labels when purchasing and get some practical DIY tips on products you can make yourself.

    It's Time to Do Better

    It's Time to Do Better

White backlash against Racial equity work has gotten BIG. I refuse to believe that all of us white people think it's acceptable. Still, our silence speaks volumes. I believe we avoid talking about it because it's so BIG, that we don't know how to counteract it, so big it's swinging elections and fueling book banning. And it's so TINY, in acts of microaggression that happen in a moment but carry deep significance. How do we get all that nuance right? Dana Smith, my cousin by marriage, has been kind enough help me understand her perspective as a Black Minnesotan. Maya Angelou told us to "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." I believe one path forward to doing better has to be sharing microstories, little moments that help us see what we didn't see before. I'm grateful to Dana for sharing hers.

Welcoming Black Voices in the Suburbs

Dr. Nneka Sederstrom was Director of the Center for Ethics and Director of the Spiritual Care Department at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC before coming to Children's Minnesota as Director of the Clinical Ethics Department. She earned her PhD in Medical Sociology, MPH in Global Health Management, and MA in Philosophy. She is widely published in Clinical Ethics and speaks regularly at national and international meetings.

Dr. Sederstrom loves to read (especially long epic fantasy series), dance, knit, and engage in all things crafty. She is the first African American woman bakery owner to use locally sourced ingredients in the state of Minnesota. She is the mother of Grayson, who happens to be a baby model, and Aadya, who may model one day. She is the wife to Charlie, the love of her life. Her favorite music is anything before 2005. Her favorite quote is “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” — Maya Angelou

Charlie Sederstrom is a registered nurse and the current clinical and technical trainer at Medica where, among other duties, he is helping to lead a health equity work group that is beginning to take a detailed look at how access to quality health care, and health literacy, can be improved across the region.

He, like many White people, is beginning to better understand the role he needs to play in recognizing, and then taking action against, racism in our community.
